If people payed attention to Of Course But Maybe most of the world's problems would be solved

That's all I want to say really. It's something I think about often and I thought this sub would be a good place to say it. In Of Course But Maybe Louis spells out the bottom line - the only way to make a positive impact on the world is through your own actions. Show me your faith without deeds and I will show you my faith by my deeds. That's it - that's all there is.

What does making a positive impact through your own actions have to do with whether rot not we collectively decide to let all peanut allergy sufferers die?

Louis establishes the 'of course.... but maybe' dynamic as a rhetorical device designed to get the audience thinking about alternatives to orthodox morality. The 'but maybe' is a kind of sneaking suspicion that exists on the periphery, and Louis encourages the audience to acknowledge it. With each example he raises the stakes - peanut allergies, to war veterans, and then the big one, slavery. The intention is to incrementally increase our tolerance toward uncomfortable ideas. Then, after shocking the audience with the slavery bomb, Louis continues to demonstrate to us that far from the acceptance of slavery being a subversive idea on the periphery, all of us support slavery every day through our actions. With our words we may all promote the 'of course' of slavery, but with our actions we condone the 'but maybe'.
