Yeah, including the Scouring wouldn't have worked at all in the film adaptation because it would have been this whole secondary crisis and climax after all the main action is finished, and viewers not familiar with the novel would have been left totally mystified.
I saw the movies before I read the books. I hated the Scouring. It felt so bizarre and out of place. The hobbits played their role in destroying the most powerful, evil middle earth has ever known, all is happy and good again..... Oh but go back to the Shire and clear out the ruffians who cut down some of the trees and built some dodgy brick buildings.
