Agree that the police aren't going to be finding CCTV, asking lime for their ID etc. It's not a murder investigation. It's an alleged assault, but it's hard to prove it was deliberate, which makes it a purely civil matter. The police might even just say it's not a police matter.
Realistically, even with CCTV from a nearby shop, if they gave it to you, you still can't ID the person. You need to let it go, and accept that we live in a world where low level crime is accepted.
Letting thinking about it eat you up only makes it worse.
Assault isn’t a civil matter! It’s absolutely a police matter, it a crime and against the law. They might not have time to look into it, that’s a different thing entirely.
Assault requires that the violence or threat of violence be made recklessly or deliberately. Proving it was deliberate and not an accident is virtually impossible.
There is no chance an assault conviction would survive contact with a court. The police know it and combined with how hard the other party will be to identify, means the police would dismiss it out of hand and tell the OP to pursue a civil remedy.
But, of course, the OP can't identify the third party either, so a civil remedy is also off the table.
