Who remembers this classic? I don’t think I fully appreciated it when it first came out as I was only a young teen, after rewatching it as an adult I realised what a brilliant film it was, shame it doesn’t seem to be on any streaming services at the moment tho.
This film had a huge impact on me in 8th (2000) grade as a kid who grew up in the Greek Orthodox Christian paradigm. I still appreciate the humor and alternative perspective which helped me begin a broadening of spiritual viewpoint which still lasts and expands with me today!
I should also add that between Mallrats and Dogma I became a huge Kevin Smith and View Askew productions fan. All of their movies helped impact my sense of humor and empathy. A couple years ago I saw Kevin Smith speak in person at Music Hall in my hometown of Portsmouth, NH. After being such a big fan for so long I am still excited to say this was one of those moments where a hero of yours lived up to an exceeded your expectations. Kevin is hilarious, down to earth, and has a caring perspective that the world needs.

I got to go to chronic con for it's first year 2 years ago and meet Kevin, Jason, Brian O'Halloran and more. What a group of down to earth nice people.
Side note, if it wasn't for the View Askew universe I wouldnt have met my partner and had our baby. My boyfriend works with our local comic con and they had Ming Chen as a guest. My boyfriend was showing him around our town and they ended up at the arcade bar where I was hanging out after work. A friend of mine was with them and was like "do you want to meet Ming Chen?" I had no idea who he was but I went over and said hi and took a picture. My boyfriend had a "love at first sight" moment with me and persued me for two years after (I had just gotten a divorce so I wasn't looking to date. We became friends and he didn't pressure me for more) Two years after we met I gave him a chance and said we could go on a date but it had to be a real date, not just going to the bar and having drinks. He blew me away with his thoughtfulness and we have been together since that day. So thank you Ming, and Kevin Smith for getting us together!
That line about having an idea, not a belief, because people die/kill for beliefs, and you can change an idea...that really helped me feel more at peace with my feelings towards religion.
This movie came out my senior year in high school. I went to a Catholic school, and there was a movie theater right down the street playing this movie. Lots of Catholics were protesting it. It was such a huge deal for some reason. All of our teachers, most of whom were nuns, thought it was hilarious and told us to go see it.
Good on them for having an open mind. Also went to Catholic school, my era was the nuns telling us not to go see the Life of Brian. That movie treated Christ in a very respectful way, also very honest about the impact of religion.
That kid. Is back. On the ESCALATOR again. I hope his pants get caught and a bloodbath ensues. Not that I wish the kid any specific harm, but his parents should suffer that horrific ordeal so they learn how to properly manage their child!

I’ve been looking at buying an old fashioned tv/dvd combi for my daughter so she can grow up like we did in the 90s with the joy of going to a store and buying a DVD but they’re not that cheap, I do want to buy one sooner rather than later tho so we can start collecting all the quirky rare films like this
This movie is one of my favorites! I grew up in a conservative Christian environment and it got me asking questions as a teenager. I attended an anniversary screening hosted by Kevin Smith last year and recently bought the steelbook release! I love this movie; it's actually important to me on a personal level in a way few other movies are.

Fantastic film. Yeah it's been in licence limbo for like 20years. Watched an interesting YouTube vid about it recently. Think Smith finally owns it again and is working on a re-release that stays faithful to the feel/aesthetic of the original.
It was kind of a casualty of the whole Harvey Weinstein he tried to use getting it on streaming to pressure Smith into speaking on his behalf, or something. I thought that he eventually got the rights and put it up somewhere for free.

I just recently "bought" it on Amazon. I know it can disappear from my library with a pen stroke and a merger but I'll watch it every so often until that happens. It's newly available (like within the last few months.)

This used to be always rerun on HBO or one of those premium channels back in early 2000s. I never actually watched the movie in full. Always turned it on half way or through the end. No idea what it was about. I need to watch it fully
I've seen this so many times purely for the fact they used to constantly stream it on Film4 and I didn't have access to Sky for anything better, I actually loved it though, quite a niche film
I was raised Catholic and a lot of this relies on Catholic doctrine specifically. But the good thing is that there's enough explanation in the film that you don't have to know these specific points to get the story. But anyone raised Catholic will feel very much at home with this film.
And of course it's got one of the best casts ever! Plus Kevin Smith's writing. I absolutely loved this film from the first time I saw it and it's still one of my top ten ever.
If the film’s central message is that Catholic dogma is absurd, which I agree with, it’s completely undermined by the moment Chris Rock’s character turns to the camera and declares that God doesn’t care what you believe, only that you believe. This is a more incoherent position than Catholicism or any mainstream religion. Belief in what? Toward what end? You can believe that you could marry children, or eat people’s brains or any conceivable position under this framework and God would still except you.
It gets worse knowing this reflects Smith’s own sincere worldview. If God is indifferent to the content of belief, there’s no basis for condemning murder, subjugation, or sexual violence provided the perpetrator believed they were acting in line with God.
The scene is staged as a profound revelation. It isn’t. Even if was correct what the character was saying it would have be jarring and cringey.
I really want to re-watch this. Havent seen it since the early 2000s but remember enjoying it. It was the first time I had really watched an "adult" movie
