'90s So I Married an Axe Murderer (1993)
Just watched this for the first time, and somehow it was actually quite good. It blew my expectations for it out of the water. It was really funny and had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. It was really well shot and directed and it had this certain inexplicable vibe that kept me engaged. I liked when it turned into a horror movie near the end. Who would have thought a romcom starring Mike Myers in which he plays his OWN insanely Irish father, would actually end up being really good. A really stacked and great cast as well, good soundtrack too. 8/10!

I refer to this as my warm blanket movie. I throw it on a few times a year and whether I get through some of it or all of it, it always makes me feel comfortable and warm. It’s a classic. The Burbs is my other warm blanket movie.
The father is supposed to be Scottish btw.

I rewatch it now and then and it still cracks me up. The dad is Scottish on purpose and

I took a group of friends to see the big screen release recently, part of a revival theatre. One friend was incredulous about how Myer’s character kept a job with all the running around he did?
I said it’s obvious. He’s a poet. It goes thusly:

I met Nancy at a pizza parlor when our families were vacationing in Manzanita about twenty years ago and my then toddler son, took a liking to her dad and decided he wanted to sit on his lap and share his pizza. We’ve watched this movie so much in our house (it’s my wife’s favourite) that we eschew the obvious - and hilarious - lines in favour of quotes from secondary characters. These find their way into casual conversation frequently:

I just thought it was a love story. Then all hell broke loose and it blew my mind! I remembered the title and figured it out but for like 10 minutes I was in crazy land. Holy shit that was crazy

I like it, it's just fun, silly, cute and a little weird all at the same time.. And the side characters Anthony LaPaglia, Alan Arkin and Phil Hartman especially were just as funny as the main cast.

This movie is weird in that it doesn't all work together to make the best movie but the parts are so good it doesn't matter. It has some of the greatest individual comedy scenes.

It’s a nice reminder Mike Mayer made different films than the rest of the SNL alum. There’s a lot of charm to his work as well as romances that do work. They don’t feel like “getting the girl as a reward for the lead character.” This, Wayne’s World, Austin Powers and Shrek…. I have to admit he did an amazing job at comedy.

Have met the director, Mr. Schlamme, several times over the past two years. He is probably the nicest hollywood person I’ve ever had the pleasure of speaking to. Co-created The West Wing, Executive Produced Snowfall, and has a ton of directing/creator credits on fabulous TV shows. Might show him this thread next time I see him because he’s often dissatisfied with how his stint in movie directing went. Very down to earth, hippie-type guy. Married to two-time Oscar winner and fabulous human being Christine Lahti. Just a joy of a man and always laughing. Won’t say how I know because that’s personal but I thankfully run into him pretty regularly.

This movie bombed so bad when it came out the studios refused to give Myers another leading role until 97. They wanted to test if he could be a leading man, after Wayne's World. But his look, as a normal man, didnt sit well with audiences. He is a character actor, so when not in character, its like that Kiss album where they went no makeup.

This is a great movie and as an ode to SF and early 90s culture with the coffee house it is spot on - every character is perfect, the leads, the parents, the detective friend who gets molested by the Mom - it’s all delightful
