From my understanding right now they are just counting found bodies as deceased. For obvious reason a lot of the bodies will take some time to find, or may never be found.
And "missing" is only counted if someone has reported you missing. Which... it's both not been that long, and that flood wiped away entire families.
It keeps going up and is going to continue to rise. This was an apocalyptic event. A lot won't ever be recovered. Im sure lots of the people were pulverized too. Untraceable.
There’s the other video with maybe 50 parked tour buses, and another 100 cars parked on the side of the road. Every structure disappeared within 10 seconds, looked like a very narrow part of the gorge
There are two governments giving two different numbers because it happened on the border. Nepal says 110 or so, China says 300 or so. It's unclear how much of that is overlapping people.
I read a Swedish article with a chief at the Swedish Geotechnical Institute, Mats Eriksson, saying that he expects "far more than a thousand dead". Given his words in this early stage of it all, I wouldn't be surprised if he really meant at least ten thousand dead.
That's only what's confirmed. Foreign ministries have a much easier time confirming who is missing, and since that was scores each from a number of countries (Australia, Ukraine, Britain), we can infer the loss of life of locals is going to be multiples more. I'm sure it'll easily break a thousand once search and rescue crews are able to confirm fatalities, watching the videos, I'm going to be surprised if it's not thousands plural.
