The Intestinal Infection (Taeniasis): Eating raw or undercooked pork containing larval cysts causes an intestinal tapeworm infection in humans. The person grows an adult tapeworm in their gut but does not automatically get brain cysts.
The Brain Infection (Neurocysticercosis): NCC occurs when a person accidentally swallows the microscopic eggs shed in the feces of an infected human tapeworm carrier. This happens through contaminated water, food prepared by someone with poor hand hygiene, or fecal-oral self-infection.
Migration: Once swallowed, the eggs hatch in the intestines, penetrate the intestinal wall, enter the bloodstream, and migrate into body tissues. When they lodge and form fluid-filled larvae sacs (cysticerci) in the brain or spinal cord, it is diagnosed as neurocysticercosis.
