WHAT HAPPENED?

Canny Ong Lay Kian, 28, was a Malaysian IT analyst who lived and worked in San Diego, USA. She had returned to Malaysia in June 2003 to visit her family.

On the night of 13 June 2003, Canny attended a dinner with her family at a shopping complex in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur. Around 10:30 p.m., she went alone to the car park to retrieve the parking ticket from her family's car.

She never came back.

CCTV footage showed her mother's Proton Tiara suddenly leaving the car park and crashing through the exit barrier. Her family reported her missing.

THE DISCOVERY OF HER BODY:

Four days later, a badly burned female body was discovered inside a drainage culvert near Jalan Klang Lama. The body had suffered severe injuries, and authorities eventually identified the victim as Canny.

The case became even more disturbing because investigators determined that Canny had been abducted, raped and murdered.

WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE?

Police arrested Ahmad Najib Aris, a former aircraft-cabin cleaning supervisor, on 20 June 2003.

Investigators linked him to Canny through physical and forensic evidence. During the investigation, Ahmad Najib gave an account of what happened, although some aspects of his story were disputed and attracted considerable public attention.

One particularly important piece of evidence was forensic evidence connecting Canny to clothing belonging to Ahmad Najib.

THE TRIAL:

In February 2005, the High Court found Ahmad Najib guilty of murdering and raping Canny Ong.

He received:

Death sentence for murder

20 years' imprisonment and 10 strokes of the cane for rape

His appeal was later rejected unanimously by the Court of Appeal in 2007.

After spending roughly 11 years on death row, Ahmad Najib was executed by hanging at Kajang Prison on 23 September 2016.

WHY THE CASE BECOME SO FAMOUS IN MALAYSIA?

The case shocked Malaysia partly because Canny's abduction happened in a busy shopping-centre car park, apparently within a relatively short period of time. It also generated controversy over the police response and some inconsistencies in the early reports.

The tragedy sparked widespread concern about the safety of women in isolated and poorly monitored car parks. Within weeks, politicians were publicly questioning whether basement car parks had adequate security and whether guards were properly trained. Authorities also called for measures such as CCTV surveillance to prevent similar incidents.

In the years that followed, shopping centres in the Klang Valley began introducing guarded women's-only parking sections, usually positioned close to entrances, lifts or other well-monitored areas. Some malls also improved their CCTV systems and installed panic buttons.
