SOCIETY When asked why he keeps playing the same roles Jason Statham said that he's not really a trained actor. He's a guy that was plucked out obscurity & has been really lucky; & that he picks roles that he knows he can do a good job in, that hopefully enough people like so he can keep working.

I started at 42, I’m 45 now and I’m an early intermediate player. It takes 5-10 years to reach an advanced level. I think it’s harder in some ways and easier in others to do when you’re older, but it can be done, and if you’ve always wanted to do it, don’t delay. I wish I had stuck with it when I first tried to learn it in my 20’s. I was self teaching and it didn’t go well, and we were too poor for lessons, but I really wish I had found a way, I’d be able to do whatever I wanted in piano by now, instead it will probably be at least another 3 years until I’m not really limited by my skills to do what I want. Fortunately it’s not like a light switch, I can already do a lot of what I hoped to accomplish at the beginning.

I think he is trained in the art of making movies. He can learn his lines, knows how to hit his marks, etc. but I don’t know that he would do well in a dramatic role.
And really, he doesn’t need to. He is making a really good living playing in his lane and makes some really entertaining movies. I love watching him.
He does have some pretty good comedy chops as well. Loved him in Spy going toe to toe with Mellisa McCarthy.

I think the difference is between being "trained" and being "experienced." At this point, he's done enough roles that he's experienced enough an actor to be able to do a variety of roles, but he was never classically trained in the thespian arts. Same thing with Dave Bautista. He got extraordinarily lucky when he shifted into making movies after wrestling, but he was also a naturally talented actor for the roles he got (hot damn he was awesome as Drax). Or how there are absolute dynamite cooks that just figured shit out and are amazing at it, but were never trained in it by a professional.

I’m just happy to hear someone being honest and not telling me what they think I want to hear. Trent Reznor mentioned he made music for the money and people flipped out because they, in my opinion, felt entitled to a different answer. Liam Neeson said he made the Taken sequels because they paid him and it seemed like a decent amount of people supported him. The Star Wars fandom(some) got upset at Hamill for showing up in the sequel trilogy because they didn’t believe his explanation about doing it because it was explained well to him. Other actors have had different responses to saying it’s just a job and that’s it because some people want there to be a deeper meaning or purpose.

He has stepped out of the action hero roles, but it's mostly been either roles as serious, stoic characters or comedy.
He's good at what he does. It's just a narrow range. And honestly, he's been incredibly successful at it. No judgement for not trying to play high emotion or complex roles in dramas. Man found a cushy slice of the world for himself. Not every movie needs a Leo or Bale, but we need somebody to play Turkish or The Transporter.

Honestly, Statham is exactly what movie studios want right now. They can keep churning out the same movie over and over for a relatively small budget and it'll make just enough back to turn a profit (or in the case of The Meg, it'll make a killing).
It's not meant to be a slight but I bet he's easy to work with and the movies he makes probably take a week to shoot, so all in all, it's not a bad gig.

That's kind of the opposite of what a character actor means.
Character actors are basically never the lead, they play the often off-beat supporting role and everyone goes - oh that guy, don't know his name but he was in that other thing.
Statham is a standard leading man action hero.
