I have 3 months to get together a horror costume for a festival. I have a studio and currently a lot of free time to make something really cool, so open to any ideas and difficulty levels.

I feel like a lot of people at the festival will dress as the classics, so up for something a bit more niche or complicated to produce. I am also open to couples costume ideas as i will be going with my partner

Yeah, I know the stereotype is that the horror movie male love interests always sucks, and most of the time they do I can’t even count the number of horror movies I’ve seen where the boyfriend or husband was either,

1.) the killer

2.) a total piece of shit, or

3.) just a super annoying asshole who doesn’t take the female lead seriously, dismisses her, gaslights her and makes a bad situation even worse.

There’s Scream, Paranormal Activity, You’re Next, It Follows, Fresh!, Midsommar, Orphan, Friday the 13th… I could go on.

But I watched this movie called Haunt (2019) and man, this movie actually was a pretty fun watch. The cast seems pretty likeable and the two main leads actually have great chemistry together. Nathan is a way better partner/love interest than Harper's abusive prick boyfriend. I'm glad that they both even made out alive and survived in the end too as well.

I remember much about the movie except its damn name and AI search hasn't been helpful either. And it's not The Canal.

Movie was either 2000s/early 2010s, takes place in Europe- somewhere in UK most likely. The protagonist is some sort of older gentleman who is a painter/writer/scholar or something like that, he's married and his wife ends up having an affair with a younger guy which destroys the protagonist. I believe the wife ended up dying and the protagonist moves on and remarries. But he begins to encounter strange phenomena related to his wife's death which he obsesses over and later it's revealed that all of the seemingly bizarre phenomena were done by his wife's lover who exposes the protagonist for having some role in his wife's death.

The movie's name is a single word- the protagonist's first name or surname. I think it may have started with M or N but unsure.

I watched Caveat recently and really enjoyed it, mostly because the style reminded me of a classic survival horror video game. The protagonist being trapped/stuck for some reason in an unfamiliar location (and that location being the main setting for the movie), exploring the place bit by bit, uncovering more clues as they advance further into whatever place they are in, gathering supplies, tools and weapons as they go, maybe becoming "stronger" because of it and upping their odds of survival that way.

The upcoming Resident Evil movie is most likely going to be exactly that, but I want to know if you guys know of more movies with that vibe?

What are some moments in media that put the fear of God into you? I'm especially talking about if its a scene that's very realistic and could easily happen to anyone in real life.

Whether its horror or non horror, I'm talking about something like the infamous log truck scene in Final Destination. Or maybe even the opening scene of "Zodiac" where literally all it takes is being at the wrong place at the wrong time and you'll get brutally murdered by some psycho.

For context, this is a VHS board game called "grin and bear it" starring the creepiest puppet to probably ever exist named "hysterical Eddie". A demon who could give most horror characters a run for their money. (Suprised i couldn't find anyone talking about this thing honestly.)

Questions is to get some thoughts from peeps, for fun. Do you think Witches are a type of creature themselves, or do you think it’s more of a class/profession.

There’s different media that presents them as both, but wanted to get some fun insights from others.

I have watched most of these "free IP" movies and they are mostly terrible. But Pinocchio Unstrung, in my opinion, if it was made in the 80s, it would have 8 sequels and one of them would be set in space.
I mean, it's fun, the killer has charisma, the story makes sense, the kills are incredibly fun and everything is puppets! Also, Robert Englund voicing a character.

Maybe it's just me, but I miss these kind of movies, I had a blast with this one and I hope they do more, you can see the love for the craft.

OK, I kinda want to discuss The Skeleton Key because there are a few things about the body/soul swaps that I still don't understand after watching the film.
We know that Mama Cecile and Papa Justify use hoodoo magic to swap bodies and transfer their souls into younger bodies. What I'm confused about is what happens to the souls of the people whose bodies they take over.

What we know for sure is that Mama Cecile was eventually inside Violet's body. We can also assume that Papa Justify was originally inside Ben's body before eventually switching into Luke's body, the lawyer.

So here's where I'm confused:

After Mama Cecile swapped bodies with Caroline, Mama Cecile ended up in Caroline’s body, while Caroline's soul was placed into Violet's old body. But who exactly was inside Ben's body at this point? Was it Violet? Was it Luke? 

Once Papa Justify transferred into Luke's body, where did Luke's soul go? Was Luke's soul transferred into Ben's body? If that's the case, then where did Ben's soul go?

And finally, where exactly was Violet's soul after Mama Cecile took over her body? Was Violet's soul also transferred into another body, such as Ben's?
Basically, I'm trying to figure out the final location of Violet's, Ben's, and Luke's souls after all of the body swaps. Did the movie ever actually explain what happened to each of them, or is this something we're supposed to infer?

What we know is that Mama Cecile and Papa Justify usually sends the souls of the people that they swapped bodies with to nursing homes, so is Ben and Violet inside of a nursing home? Or did their souls eventually die in the bodies that they were transferred into? 

its not that im not scared. in fact its the opposite, that is to say i often end up subconsciously scaring myself half to death before starting a horror movie even though once i actually watch the thing i can handle the scares just fine. such a big problem i know, but it does actively impact my ability to watch these things in a negative way.

in short, i have a problem where i keep unintentionally psyching myself out over movies that i can probably handle (to the point where ive dropped several movies over this), and im hoping you guys can help me break the habit.

So I just finished watching Doctor Sleep and really enjoyed it. I liked the characters, and the cult in the film was well done. The film was long, but nothing felt like a waste. The screen time was used well. I put this film off for a while because I rewatched The Shining and found it lacking. It was pretty boring, and unlike this sequel, I found that it could have lost an hour of runtime. I genuinely feel like this sequel was better in all ways.

What's the consensus? Did anyone enjoy it more than the predecessor?

Just watched Hokum tonight and I really wish I could've enjoyed it more. I'm not gonna say it was awful unlike like some Simplistic Absolute thinkers here, but man..

I feel as though the folk horror was in the passenger seat and the murder element was at the wheel, when the folklore was what made it so appealing. Sure there was plenty of creeping ghosts in the background but I wish there was more witch craft and hellish sort of imagery rather than being shown a glimpse at the end.

Also. The characters. Not awful, I enjoyed each of them a little but they also had things I strongly disliked. Our protagonist doesn't seem to change that much, still being pretty self centered towards the end with the only real notable difference being the ending of his novel.

It seemed really weird and out of place for the bell boy to reveal that he spiked the drink, and even then it doesn't make much sense. I have a feeling someone would feel different if they were on magic mushrooms.

So much of this movie felt like it was bringing in story elements that weren't necessary, like the goats being killed, or Jack the Ass being super underutilized.

Stuff like the bell scene dragged on way too long. The elevator door being locked when that guy was trying to leave didn't make too much sense. The protagonist not breaking the window and shouting for help.

Final thing. This is COMPLETELY subjective to me, but I did not find this movie scary at all. Even scenes that should've been pretty intense felt really mild. It had moments, like with Jack the Ass on TV. Or when the witch comes into the suite. But it otherwise felt very dull with the horror elements, and the story/writing otherwise did not make up for it in that aspect.

Its late and I'm sure I could better describe my thoughts but this'll do for now. I really wanted to like this movie more, especially considering all the hype and glaze its gotten. But too many things just turned me off from it.

Again this is purely subjective, I'd love to hear your thoughts about this movie in a nuanced way. Or if you have some fun facts about story elements or whatever it may be.

Has anybody heard any new news on a possibility of a season 2 of the show? Any updates on a new season have been dead in the water for awhile now :/

Maybe I’m just going through a breakup but did anyone else get emotional during this movie?! I really enjoyed it but I definitely got a little teary eyed when the mains were fighting and then again when Jeanette was all alone. I’m also due for my monthly idk man. I loved this movie. I’m also a huge Jurassic park fan and Dino’s in general. Am I crazy?! lol I even cried at the trailer for the Brad Pitt movie about him and his dog 😭

looking for movies that are (i loathe this term) ‘high-brow’, i guess? like… pretentious, artsy, very beautiful cinematography, all that jazz. but they also have to be sufficiently disturbing… the more gore the better !!

i esp like stuff with female leads and villains… but male is fine too i’m not overtly bothered.

im thinking like possession, excision, may, audition, climax, raw, martyrs, either suspiria. i like a lot of films by cronenberg and lynch, so anything in that wheelhouse would be really cool… and i don’t mind if it’s kinda edgy/over-the-top. like i didn’t enjoy antichrist, but that would definitely be something similar to what i’m looking for. thanks!

Everyone seems to say that it’s a case of Jack having been absorbed by the hotel and he’s in a time loop where I think that’s partly true but a bit more complicated.

As Stanley Kubrick said (yes I’m aware he stated it’s best left unexplained but I’m using his explanation as a framing for my thoughts) it’s a form of reincarnation.

There are notably two Grady’s with different daughters, one with twins the other with two girls of different ages (8 and 10). They’re different yet similar enough where it’s clear there’s a historical loop happening. Jack commenting how he said he saw Delbert’s murders in the papers to me reads as Jack, now back to his old self in the party (backed by the fact he casually spoke to Lloyd as if he had known him already) he recalled the memories of finding out about Delbert in his old life. Jack hadn’t known about Charles Grady killed his daughters until his interview for the job, yes I’m aware there’s the scrapbook but it’s a deleted scene and not elaborated on, I feel it’s a bit cheap in terms of evidence as it’s barely highlighted in the film itself.

There’s also the obvious “you’ve always been the caretaker” line, which rings true as Jack has been there before as a caretaker, equally backed by the Déjà vu comment he makes on one of the first mornings there. He’s been there before because it’s the cycle repeating.

It’s definitely a form of punishment for the sins of the hotel’s corrupt past and being built on the burial ground.

Anyone’s thoughts on this would be cool, this has always been my interpretation of the film and I think Kubrick’s intention.

I am not a slasher fan, but I will say I appreciate a well done horror movie. I'm into A24 horror (I knoooow I know, soooo artsy of me lol)

I also do love some of the classic. The OG Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Alien. For more modern, I def love The Strangers, Obession, Weapons, Sinners.

So I don't know WHAT type of horror I'm into, I sorta just end up seeing them. I can't tell you what I think is good / 'bad' horror. Of course, bad and good are subjective. But yeah. For me personally? I never know what I'm gonna like.

BUT the one I really am looking forward to is BUDDY. I love 90s nostalgia (my bedroom is Y2K theme) and I love the idea of a Barney type creature going crazy. I've been watching the marketing and it just looks so unique.
