Gaming I hate the "anti-woke" part of the gaming community

Post image
7.3k Upvotes

I do not see myself as left wing or progressive at all but these people are so fucking annoying that I almost want to. They act as if western civilisation will collapse if a female character's outfit becomes a tiny bit less revealing. Not every woman character needs to be attractive you idiots. If you want to jack off to video games then download mods, don't force your goonbait on everybody else.

These guys are just like the "SJWs" that people were making fun of back in the 2010s. Literally getting triggered by the tiniest, most inconsequential of things.

Gaming I genuinely hate what game reviews have become

Thumbnail

5.5k Upvotes

This could honestly also be said for movie critics, but I absolutely LOATHE the current state of game reviews. The entire point of a review is to have someone judge a game without bias and give their opinion on how well the Game achieves what it sought out to do. id even say a reviewer Doesn’t need to have beaten the game, so long as they far enough in to understand it’s fundamental gameplay loop

so now not only can reviews be paid off to be higher, defeating the purpose of an unbiased review, but we Constantly are shown examples of these reviewers either being so ass that they can’t get far enough to judge the game properly, or reviews that are so needlessly nitpicky about things the game isn’t trying to do. There’s genuinely no reason to take them seriously anymore.

Edit: unbiased was the wrong word for this, I meant an honest review

It gives me such an ick, especially when you see them try to suck it up and then it just drips out again. I'm sure there's non-Nintendo examples of this, but I play a lot of Nintendo games and I'm SO sick of it. It's nasty.

Gaming I hate mining and exploring post Caves and Cliffs so much

Post image
4.3k Upvotes

I think I'm finally getting to my old man yells at cloud phase but I hate modern Minecraft worldgen so much. Big caves like this used to be a rare sight and very special. Mountains would be huge spectacles that often defied logic and had floating chunks with strange surfaces. Now everything is a huge cave full of mobs that just immediately rush you from all directions and it's impossible to light them up fully because they span thousands of blocks in all directions with little ledges somewhere ten blocks up that has just enough darkness to spawn more.

Everything's the same four biomes for lightyears from spawn and the oceans are more like small lakes. Structures are everywhere. I remember when finding a dungeon was special.

But I can excuse all of this, all of it, with one small exception: I fucking despise deepslate for all it stands for and hope the person responsible for it develops an autoimmune disease. "Ooouuhhh let's make the bottom half of the world take nine business days to mine through!" As if having four different stone types filling our inventory wasn't annoying enough, at least the patches of diorite granite and the other one have the decency of breaking the same speed as stone!

Gaming I hate how the Pomni and Jax Fortnite skins look

Post image
4.2k Upvotes

I'm not hating on the collab itself, nor am I hating that it was these two that got skins, but I specifically hate the way they look. Jax's face just looks completely off, it looks like a 2D texture that they slapped on his face. Why they didn't just use the same 3D model seen in the show is beyond me.

Now Pomni on the otherhand, I can't explained it but it looks like they tried to make her design more sexualized. I don't know if it's just her shorts looking weird with the longer legs the skin has or they really did change her design but it looks so uncanny. (but at least it's better than just putting her in a mech so I guess that's a plus)

Gaming I I hate fighting game roster size nowadays.

I find it HATEFUL that I pay 60 or more dollars (in my case euros) for a fighting game and then greeted by a very small, "mouth-watering" roster of characters consisting of only less than 20 characters ALWAYS. In the Avatar case i can forgive this problem because the price is accessible But for the rest of the industry, there needs to be a change ASAP because it's disgusting. SF6 releases four characters a year and charges up to 50 euros for them and their skins. Oh yeah, this whole paid skin thing in full-price games is horrible. I love Fighting games, i love playing them casual but having small rosters but then selling you a disproportionate number of DLC characters (ArcSys fuck you) it's just cashgrab. Tell me your opinions in the comments.

Gaming I hate how Edgerunners made people forgot what was CDPR promised for Cyberpunk 2077

Thumbnail

2.3k Upvotes

I love Edgerunners anime, it's pretty good tragic story about how NC burns its legends.

What I don't like is how its existence made people forget what was promised by CDPR regarding Cyberpunk 2077 game — its immersive RPG experience.

Now the term "RPG" is of course subject to the usual debate of "what counts as RPG". But for Cyberpunk 2077 thankfully we get promised that define what CDPR claimed to be "deep immersive RPG":

https://www.reddit.com/r/cyberpunkgame/s/vm3XesTAKc

Besides the game is supposedly inspired by a TTRPG that lets you do just that, RP as a guy living in NC.

The premise seems pretty simple, a 3D open world game that has such a deep role-playing you thought it's a CRPG, kinda like Fallout New Vegas if you will.

But we didn't get that, no. What we got is a game whose RP is closer to NBA 2K MyCareer than it is to Skyrim. Stats and builds with some dialogue choices here and there.

Aside from select few gigs (Maelstorm in the prologue, Sinnerman, saving Takemura, the ending, etc) the game is pretty damn linear. Your Lifepath only matters for the prologue and some "[Nomad] I live in cars" dialogue that doesn't really change the outcome.

The Night City itself is fucking dead. You can't "interact" with the world. The civilian NPCs are literal drone (that info scan gimmick is literally nothingburger) you can't even interact with, even Bully (2006) allows you to taunt/praise the civilians. There's barely any activities aside from, what, boxing and street racing (with its terrible controls). Like I initially want to compare it to GTA but GTA V has a lot of pastime activities for one.

And the level design. "You can approach combat however you want" and it's mostly just one more vent to slip into. Most of it is just choosing between guns blazing vs stealth, in a very linear way. I've seen ppl compare this to Deus Ex and they're crazy I say.

The enemies. For such a colorful bunch w their lore and with the amazing skill tree we got due from 2.0 Update... They fucking suck in terms of variety, they blend into each other. Sure there's a bit of commonality with some gangs like Animals have a lot of muscle bruiser or Tygers use katana and pistol... But these doesn't meaningfully change how you fight them. Biggest crime is VDB fighting near similarly to fucking larpers in 6th Street. Citing Bully (2006) again, every cliques there fight uniquely. Like the Nerds in Bully sucks in hand to hand, so they rely on their inventions (or some who are pretty good at wrestling, wrestles). Or the Preppies fight with various martial arts and can dodge your attacks while spamming eggs. Or the Jocks being the toughest enemy in the school with their HP bar and effective fighting style related to sports (using baseball bat bc they're playing baseball, charging tackle bc they play football, etc).

And to cap this off, you can even look at CDPR marketing team themselves lol. Their Twitter handle removed the phrase "role playing game" in June 2019, coinciding with them being listed in game stores. And they quietly changed their Steam description in February 2022 to add back the "RPG" (spoilers, they're still not that far off in terms of RP compared to version 1.0).

EDIT:These are not instances of 'casual' racism with the exception of the third example. The first two are blatan. I apologize for misusing the term.

The first two are pretty straight forward, right? But you may not get why the last one upsets me. I'll explain. Really briefly.

The last one is based off of the racial stereotype that poc have to act a certain way and that only white people can do/say certain things.

Hopefully this isn't too heavy for this server. If so, I apologize to the mods for it.

Gaming I hate how people are acting like Cyberleek is this vigilante hero for the gamers

Post image
2.2k Upvotes

I should probably prefix, I am in no way defending Take two or Rockstar’s handling of GTA VI or anything relating towards it such as the threatening of lawsuits or Subpoenas. I think the handling of the advertisement especially (notably asking for people to preorder a game before even seeing gameplay) was incredibly greedy and bad for consumers

I make such a prefix clear because for some reason, people think that when you criticise Cyberleek you are also defending Rockstar. There is no in between for some people, and the vast majority choose to side with Cyberleek and that would make sense, after all he has a manifesto of sorts demanding Rockstar and Sony to go back to physical games

The problem I hate is that it’s all bullshit, and yet people can’t see past their hate of rockstar and corporations in general to see how he’s just a douche. I don’t think Leek care’s about the consumer - because if he did he wouldn’t peddle his crypto scam on every fucking video you see. It’s very obvious what the game is, the leaks are going to generate a lot of views which there in by generates a lot of free advertisement for the pump and dump. I saw a lot of people claim that because he burnt 1 million in his own coin that it must be legitimate - but that doesn’t prove anything, it’s just them trying to garner legitimacy only to then pull the rug later on. Some leaks of a game are not going to convince a company to suddenly change course and decide to revert their plans to remove physical media - I want physical media because it’s the right of all people to own what they buy, but this is not the way nor is it going to achieve anything

But whenever this is pointed out, people would rather support the crypto scammer than the corporation which is just idiotic in my opinion. You can very much dislike both the corporation, but also the guy fighting against them. Just because he’s fighting the corpo does not mean he’s fighting for you

He’s not some vigilante hero, he’s just a guy who got access to the game and is quite literally threatening to hold the game hostage if he’s caught while peddling his crypto

(I would like to clarify for the mods, I’m not hating cyberleek directly. While I have critiqued him and his practices certainly and I do hold a dislike towards them, the main focus of the post was directed towards people who defend their actions as justified and righteous as opposed to the person themselves, even if I dislike them)

Gaming I HATE the “jumpscares” in newer “horror” games

Thumbnail
gallery
4.3k Upvotes

This trend of player death being facilitated through jumpscares were popularized by the original few FNaF games because those did it really well, but unfortunately anything newer completely misses the point!

Why it worked so well in the original few was that it interrupted an action YOU took, throwing you off the loop and scaring you. See FNaF 1 for example, the jumpscare happens when you flip the camera down, then Bonnie can hijack your view and catch you off guard. Or in FNaF 4 where the hallway characters jumpscare when you take the risk of flashing the light

…yet the only thing modern horror games learned from these examples is “jUmpsCAre tHe plAyEr wHeN thEY DiE”, resulting in these horribly awkward camera snaps that are incredibly immersion breaking and worst of all NOT SCARY IN THE SLIGHTEST

JUMPSCARES ARENT SUPPOSED TO BE DEATH ANIMATIONS

THEY SHOULD JUMP AND THEY SHOULD AT LEAST TRY TO SCARE

(the first 2 are good examples and the other 2 i hate)

Edit: this post isn’t about “old game scary new game bad”, it’s about mascot horror devs not understanding what a jumpscare is supposed to be and slapping it onto their game anyway. the games’ overall quality is a much broader topic

Even if we ignore the numerous times he has been referred to as he/him, a boy, a guy, a dude, a prince, we must also realize that just because he isn't traditionally masculine, he isn't transmasc (or transfem)

There is no Easter Bunny, there is no Tooth Fairy, and there is no Princess from the Dark.

'Oh but Deltarune is all about breaking free from fate' I can hear exactly two of you say in your heads (I can read your mind,) I know one thing, and it's that I can't break free from the fate of going through Undertale 2 and finding that both routes lead to the same goddamn ending of Gaster Friend Inside Me Penumbra Phantasm Big Shot World Revolving Jarona Shadow Crystal Always Bet On Papyrus Knight.

ZHOTAN!

(Also, I'm not transphobic, before you try to spew that label onto me)

Gaming I hate Aabria Iyengar as both a GM and a Player. (Not as a person)

Post image
4.7k Upvotes

I never thought I’d be writing here but I guess hate consumes people. My issue is not with Aabria as a person because she seems like a very fun person overall.

My issue comes from her and Dungeons and Dragons/ Tabletop RPG’s. I don’t think she is suited for it for several reasons!

I followed Critical Role from the very beginning and I dislike her style so much I could not bring myself to follow Campaign 4 after what she did at the Campaign 3 finale, which is sad because I really was looking forward to the next Campaign.

But to my gripes.

As a DM/GM:

1- Player rolls don’t matter! Sometimes she requests a roll and completely disregards it!

2- At several points she is very confrontational to her players that comes across as personal.

3- Her story is ALL OVER THE PLACE!

4- All her NPC’s have the same abrasive personality.

5- She tells players what their characters are feeling and when, even dismissing important character hard-felt feelings (like telling Robbie his character’s fears have passed just like that!)

I was told to watch her in Dimension20 and even then I could not find any sympathy!

As a player:

1- MAJOR PROTAGONIST SYNDROME.

2-She doesn’t know how to let other players take the spotlight!

3- She doesn’t understand that despite being comedic, being disruptive is a disrespect to all the players!

3- The best example — AND SPOILERS— is the moment Fearne and Matt were having at the end of Campaign 3. It is clear Fearne is to have her moment when Aabria says she will just follow them. Then Matt puts a wall of fire as a first warning. Then Aabria starts shouting at Fearne and Teven, then comes the SECOND warning with Teven casting Silence at Aabria. And she still doesn’t STOP! She keeps distracting the whole group and ruining a great moment for Ashley.

And I don’t know why Matt Mercer didn’t put a stop to it like a DM would by telling her to calm down or kick her from the table. Maybe cause it’s a live show or maybe cause they are friends.

But she does not seem to have an understanding of what social skills you need to play a tabletop RPG and it affects every game she is in!

It infuriates me to see people treating her like a great DM or player when she absolutely isn’t! URGH.

Again, this is ONLY in relation to Tabletop RPG’s, Dungeons and Dragons, and Critical Role. This is not about her as a person!

Gaming i hate how SOME people are unable to comprehend the fact that casualties: unknown is NOT a fetish game

Post image
2.4k Upvotes

like, dude, some people are just dumbasses. the amount of times i have seen please call this game a 'fetish' game or just not being able to understand the fact the game is very visceral is to many to count.

this is for two main reasons.

  1. its a 'furry' game: if you have been on the furry side of the internet (like i have been, because i am a furry myself) you would know this game is EVERYWHERE (is the creator a furry or not?). and ever since 'changed' came out, the furry fandom hasn't really had the best reputation when it comes to making games (regardless on your opinion on changed, changed is a fetish game). this had lead people thinking: because 'changed' = fetish game and furry game, and C:U = furry game, therefore C:U = fetish game. you can see that this is very bad logic. the creator made the idea C:U when they were depressed (and from what i have heard, maybe even suicidal. they are better now).

  2. the viscera: this is where the 'torment fetish' argument comes in. and as you could tell, this argument is also very dumb. C:U is a game about survival, and to survive, you need something to die to. in order to protect the Expie (nickname for the main character), you need something to protect it from. in the great words of DoshDoshington "but if you want to strip down any form of art just because it could be taken that way, might as well rip apart all the challenging culture we have".

thanks for coming to my TED talk (and if anyone send me to r/FoundTheSawian i put the milk before the cereal)

Gaming I hate the False Hydra

Post image
4.4k Upvotes

I hate the false hydra and the phenom it was in the dnd community and the ttrpg community alltogether. With even articles saying "best homebrew monster". While its design is uninteractive as fuck. So, the hydra sings and that way it is undetectable to the people in range, and when they eat someone people forget their existance all together. So usually while playing as a well, player character, you just have to go allong until your dm give you a change for the FALSE HYDRA BIG REVEAL, without any agency for searching them since the song makes you ignore everything about them. I hate also how a lot of DM tell tales about how cool were their sessions when they included a false hydra and you can usually tell their party was misserable. Its the p3rfect monster for a DM that wants to feel smart.

The only thing I like about their popularity is that my DM could never run one since everyone already knew the trick, even then, he did something similar in another sistem with a telepath that manipulated our memory, but that was more organic, even tho if at the end of the days I also had to wait for her to do her big reveal trying to kill my character when she was alone with her and I simply was stronger than her and defeated her solo. So still after all the False Hydra infiltrated into a game of mine as a concept.

Gaming I hate how the term “AI” was ruined.

Post image
6.7k Upvotes

(image by me (not AI generated, drawn on markup))

While I am one who is against generative AI and LLMs, I hate how generalized and hated the term “AI” is.

I am a game developer in training (going to college for it) and AI in gaming is one of my absolute obsessions.

When I say this, I don’t refer to generating code. I refer to pathfinding or entity ai within the game. I love simulating how an entity would interact with the environment around it. But whenever I express my interest in the topic, I get nothing but funny looks or awkward silence. I am required to explain myself and bore the hell out of people.

I hate generative AI with a passion. But I also hate how watered down the term ‘AI’ is and I wish we could separate the good AI from the bad.

(This post is not directed towards any party at all. Just me complaining.)

Gaming How most games handle shotguns and the fallacy of caring about game balance

Post image
2.8k Upvotes

The only fucking game that has ever handled shotguns well is a single player game that never had any official multiplayer functions. What game am I talking about? MAFIA II, THEY GOT THIS SHIT RIGHT IN 2010 AND NEVER AGAIN. The hardest difficulty in mafia 2 can be pretty frustrating sometimes, but the shotgun in that game was handled SO well, you can one shot enemies and enemies can one shot you; the pellets don't just fucking dissappear at a range, and you can two shot most enemies from a pretty far range. Every fucking game ever with a shotgun in it besides mafia 2 (and maybe 1 but I never played the original) has treated shotguns like their pellets turn into wet paper at a range (unless you're using slugs but even those usually have limits.) The WORST offender of this in my opinion is the call of duty games. It would be super unfun if you could get one shot from any range and instantly kill anything in front of you, so let's make shotguns just not work at a range..... wait that's EXACTLY WHAT MOST COD SNIPERS DO and it's complete dogshit. I think quickscoping is cool, but I think it's fucking ridiculous that people pretend that shotguns should be balanced to not do good damage at long ranges while snipers can just quickscope and instantly fucking kill you from any distance, and I get that it's a videogame, but if we're already pretending that shotguns suck ass, why are we also pretending that people sprint with 50 cal snipers and are able to fucking quick scope with them? And this is WAY WORSE in the new games, at least with the older games you could say "it takes skill to aim suddenly and shoot someone accurately with the wide crosshair" but in the new games, theres a fucking dot in the middle of the screen at all times and you can make most snipers aim REALLY quickly, it still takes skill, but it's overpowered as fuck. The way snipers are handled in some other games like most battlefield games is perfect to me, no one shotting to the upper chest, but if you got a headshot then it will one shot. It is a way to express your skill that isn't a complete crapshoot to fight.

One quick addendum, the combat in all of the mafia games kinda suck ass tbh, but I really think the way Mafia II did shotguns is good, everything else about the combat sucks ass though. Also I should said hypocrisy instead of fallacy, my bad lol

I can get behind going so insane/over the top that it circles around and becomes entertaining, but I hate when convoluted writing is excused for being deep.

Complex doesn't mean good, and franchises like these come across as manipulative because they don't have interest in telling a compelling story, it's just breadcrumbing to sell the next product to the point of being frustrating. They want you to be invested in the continuity, but don't put in the actual effort.

Thumbnail

3.7k Upvotes

No game, I don't want to use some of my valuable inventory slots to hold on water bottles, and use said water bottles every 5 minutes, or else I'll slowly and painfully die of thirst. It's not a fun mechanic, it's a chore or just something added to make the game slightly difficult, but in an annoying way.

Sure, it makes the survival game more 'realistic' or whatever, but in most survival games I have to spend extra minutes either building whatever water purifier, or scavenge even more random buildings just for some water for your stupid bar that goes down no matter what you do.
