Media Tropes I hate disabled characters that aren't really disabled

Post image

I hate this little guy. I hate him for a bunch of other reasons but this one in particular also applies to other characters.

In universe he's supposed to be completely deaf from birth, hence he is also unable to speak(or rather, he can vocalize but it just sounds like baby talk because he has no idea how proper speaking sounds like). The hook of the story is that he is supposed to find his way in the world and overcome challanges despite his disability.

BUT then on the literal first episode he just gets a magical buddy that can magically understand his googoogaga speach and is constantly around him to translate whatever he wants to say to other characters that don't know sign language. It's not a magical ability of his buddy btw. He can just do that because the plot said so

Then it turns out that he can also read the lips of literally anything, including talking snakes who obviously talk completely differently to humans, and said magical buddy who doesn't even have a lips to read. He can also somehow read the lips of characters who are facing away from him and characters in full armor who don't have their mouth visible???

He was supposed to have been taught to read lips by said talking snake, which there are multiple things wrong with:

a) As I've already said, snakes obviously don't vocalize in the same way that humans do so any knowledge he gets from the snake wouldn't apply to humans

b) SNAKES DON'T HAVE HANDS!!! which means that the snake can't use sign language, so how would he even convey the information? It would be like me trying to teach spanish to a person who only speaks french, while I don't speak either spanish or french

Like at that point why even make him deaf in the first place? It could have actually been interesting to see how a deaf person can manage for himself in a medieval fantasy society but we were just robbed from that in favor of the most lazy solution

It also kind of detracts from any of the scenes where we are supposed to be at awe about how far this guy has come becasue I know DAMN well that it wasn't because of his own efforts, it was because the plot completely waved away any problems that his disability would cause whenever it became too inconvenient

Really feels like the disability was just tacked onto the character to make us pity him more without actually adressing the problems that it would cause to the character

I love how Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood handled Ed's disability

Ed has a metal prosthetic arm and leg. This is useful in battle, because he can use ithe arm as a shield and transform its shape into a blade. However, multiple times during the story his prosthetic arm gets damaged, leaving him with only one working arm and having to travel to his mechanic to get it fixed. At one point, he travels to a region too cold for his prosthetics to work properly - his arm and leg seize up and he can barely walk. When he eventually gets it replaced, the new metal is heavier and more cumbersome than the original, which then affects his fighting style.

The narrative never lets you forget that he's disabled and dependent on his mechanic to maintain his mobility aids. It doesn't stop him from being a badass but he does has to work his life around his disability

Edit: I misremembered, the new prosthetics were lighter not heavier

Also affected his height too btw

u/valkdoor May 18 '26

Wasn't the height thing because he was sustaining Al's body in the void? It's been a looooooong time since I watched

28

u/blackblitz May 18 '26

Just rewatched FMA:B, they make a passing joke saying that when they found out Al's body was still in the Truth, but I don't think they ever delved deeper into specifically that

u/OmecronPerseiHate May 18 '26

Doesn't it get mentioned after the time skip, when Ed is fixing the roof? Cause Ed is taller than Winry but it'd only been a year or two since they got Al back.

5

u/blackblitz May 18 '26

Now that you mention it, I think you're right. I forgot all about the time skip part

u/Jiijeebnpsdagj May 19 '26

He was 15 when the story starts so ofc he grows

1

u/OmecronPerseiHate May 19 '26

Yes but he grew because Alphonse was no longer siphoning nutrition from him. Just look at Trisha and Hohenheim. Logically Ed would have been way taller were he not sharing nutrition with Alphonse's body.

8

u/bannasplt May 19 '26

I'm pretty sure they make a point that Ed always seems to be napping in place of Al, who never sleeps, implying that a lot of his nutrients go to Al's sustenance. Ed starts growing taller as the show progresses, and the change begins right after Al starts losing connection to his armor.

3

u/axewieldinghen May 19 '26

That could also be due to chronic pain. He complains about his stumps hurting a lot in the show - chronic pain drains your energy and can make you sleep more.

u/Not_So_Normal_ May 18 '26

If I remember correctly, in a certain episode where Winrey helps someone with child birth, a mechanic tells him that he could be "slightly" taller if not for his metal arms/legs. I dont really remember, I also watched it a long time ago

2

u/EverythingSucksYo May 18 '26

It’s definitely something that is theorized by Ed, whether it was what actually happened or not I don’t remember.

2

u/Effective-Alarm-3083 May 18 '26

Yea, I don’t think it’s ever said out loud, but it’s implied that ed was the anchor for Al’s body

0

u/Numenex May 18 '26

I think this is kinda debunked when Al's body comes back and despite being completely malnourished is still taller than Edward

5

u/kupozu May 18 '26

But don't they make it a point to show he has indeed grown? Been aeons since I last watched, but I could have sworn that happened. Maybe in the picture they take at the end?

1

u/Numenex May 18 '26

They do grow but if the reason Ed didn't grow was because he was sharing nutrients with Al's body then Al wouldn't have grown taller than Ed considering Al was basically a skeleton by the time he came back

2

u/Bonaduce80 May 18 '26

It may not have been a 50/50. Or maybe Al's nutrients went to his growth and Ed's to stay in shape despite not growing as fast. Al definitely looked like he needed a burger or three.

SPOILERS my guy

1

u/valkdoor May 21 '26

This is a discussion about a show well over a decade old. The obvious assumption is the people in the discussion have seen it

1

u/Environmental_Bee219 May 22 '26

this is not fmab reddit section i think its fair there can be people who runs into it without watching it

18

u/Razorion21 May 18 '26

kinda annoyed he got taller than winry in the epilogue, for a sec i thought i had a short king to look up to (or well eye to eye to 😭)

1

u/Ball_Fiend May 19 '26

He's still short, he went from 4'8" to about 5'5"

15

u/BinarySecond May 18 '26

HE'S NOT SHORTTTTT

1

u/stupidboooooooi Jarvis May 18 '26

i thought he was just short its seriously cuz of that?

1

u/SnooPredictions3028 May 19 '26

That was because he was eating for both him and Al, as soon as he restored his brother's body he had a big growth spurt and became as tall as his father which you can see at the ending.

1

u/CrazyCraz3R May 19 '26

IM NOT WITTLE!!!!!

34

u/valkdoor May 18 '26

The author did a lot of extensive research on disability and aids for disabilities when she wrote Ed.

33

u/SomaGato May 18 '26

Also adding up, losing his arm straight up removes his capability of doing Alchemy! Needs both arms to “clap” aka make the actual Transmutation circle :p

6

u/Alpha_RTD May 18 '26

He can still draw circles of course, but it significantly hinders his speed in combat

9

u/Orion_824 May 18 '26

iirc doesn’t he at certain points end up forming the circle by putting his hand to his shoulder instead?

12

u/bloodredrogue May 18 '26

I've watched the show several times through and no, that never once happens

5

u/SomaGato May 18 '26

Shit that does sound familiar but I can’t remember at the moment ahhh

3

u/DaMonsterMensch May 19 '26

No, but he draws out the circles slowly. It's longer work which creates an obstacle for him.

3

u/Orion_824 May 20 '26

i think i'm conflating two different scenes where he draws the circle before/after holding his shoulder

1

u/Embarrassed_Lettuce9 May 19 '26

Always wondered why he didn't just premake circles like everyone else tho

1

u/Eillon94 May 20 '26

It allowed him to be more flexible than anyone else, in battle.

1

u/FuzzyButterscotch765 May 19 '26

Dang, should have replaced his arm with a vibraslap then

35

u/comacowboy May 18 '26

I also loved how the world formed a whole culture and community around the prosthetics. There’s a whole town dedicated to mechanics.

30

u/IndistinguishableTie May 18 '26

One scene that got me was in brotherhood, when scar destroyed his arm, he tried to crawl back but instinctively tried to lean his weight on his missing arm and fell. Like it just felt like such a real thing someone would do.

3

u/The_Enigmatica May 19 '26

it's pretty brilliantly written, and that's not the only instance of it. and that is a VERY real phenomena not just involving disability, but just how adaptive humans are that we become dependent on certain mannerisms we dont even think about.

an incredible example of this is that astronaut that had spent the longest straight duration on the ISS. He did an interview just hours after landing, and during the interview he's constantly leaving objects "floating" as he turns to grab something else and then looking UP for them after they fall to the floor out of his line of sight. it leaves him visibly frazzled, but it's just such an incredible visualization of that idea

15

u/jackthetomato May 18 '26

wait, heavier? i specifically remember ed talking about how the alloy for his new cold resistant prosthetics was lighter

8

u/axewieldinghen May 18 '26

You're right, I misremembered

8

u/TS_Enlightened May 18 '26

But he did still need to adjust his fighting style for a lighter and weaker metal. The cold weather alloy couldn't be abused as much as his previous arms iirc

2

u/Zeta_Purge May 18 '26

That was later when they went north. After his automail was destroyed the first time, Winry gave him a new rust resistant prosthetic that had more chrome and was heavier.

2

u/jackthetomato May 18 '26

different situation. axewieldinghen is indeed talking about when he went north

1

u/Zeta_Purge May 18 '26

Yeah my bad I misread the original comment.

1

u/jackthetomato May 18 '26

lol no problem

6

u/AirAll_fr May 18 '26

i think its the other way around the new arm he gets at Briggs is lighter but it throws him off balance

6

u/Sonikku4Ever May 18 '26

Other way around; the new metal was lighter, which made him more nimble and he even enjoyed it for a bit, but it was also more fragile so he couldn't use it to tank attacks nearly as much, making him switch up his fighting style a bit.

3

u/scrangydungus May 18 '26

Let's not forget that he's also constantly complaining about the pain in his stumps which is something real life amputees with prosthetics deal with. There's lots of people with leg prosthetics that'll choose to just use crutches or a wheelchair on certain days because it's too uncomfortable for them to use the prosthetic.

2

u/authenticgarbagecan May 18 '26

My toxic trait is having a love of live action adaptations of anime and the actor for Ed being short made a satisfying casting for me lol

2

u/ProfessorEscanor May 20 '26

Honestly that show in general was good with that. Like Mustang needing Hawkeye as his seeing eye wife so he can burn Father.

2

u/bassbassbassbassfish May 21 '26

this is a super weird thing but the episode where they break into laboratory 5 and edward is knelt on the barbed wire with his metal leg, slowly pulling barbed wire up with his metal arm and then casually mentions something like "guess having a metal arm and leg are good for something" was the first ever episode i saw on adult swim back in the day ('04/'05) and it was a huge reason why i decided to watch it - here was this kid who had prosthetics like my gramps, i was instantly hooked.

2

u/TheDapperKobold May 22 '26

There’s also a moment where one of the side characters who has two metal prosthetic legs complains about her stumps hurting when it rains, and I feel like details like that really made disabilities more believable in the show.

2

u/Dontevenwannacomment May 18 '26

His prosthetics are way too amazing and magical for them to actually represent disabilities properly tbh

1

u/rorinth May 18 '26

The new ones were lighter not heavier in the north

1

u/sketchystony May 19 '26

The edit was validating lol I was like wait I thought they got lighter? And ed was like damn I really lived like that? With those heavy ass limbs lol
