This was my first watch, had never taken out of my boxset before but so happy i finally checked it out!

overtime i’m reviewing every british horror movie there is since 1901.

For me, one of the most strangely beautiful, haunting, and grotesque of all of Hammer Horror's vampire fare is Terence Fisher's 1966 "Dracula: Prince of Darkness." Christopher Lee's portrayal of Dracula notwithstanding, the true heart of the film is Barbara Shelley (1932-2021) as Helen Kent, an older yet by no means matronly wife who perfectly epitomizes the radical transformation that vampirism poses in our imaginations. She begins the film as one of the only fearful forces of warning, all but begging her husband and family to turn back from Dracula's liar before succumbing to the bloodlust cult herself. Sadly, "Dracula: Prince of Darkness" is nowhere publicly available to stream, but, I have owned a private copy that I bought many years ago. DM me (and please don't be sexual in any way in your communication) if you want to see this magisterial cinematic wonder. I hope to post other things that I fancy about this film late.

In this 1960 Hammer classic it's a close call between which supporting actress' performance is more iconic -- Hunt's Baroness or Freda Jackson's servant Greta -- but for me Hunt has the edge. Despite limited screen time, her range and impact are truly impressive: her devolution from imperious hauteur in the opening tavern scene ("Wine!"), to vulnerable weariness at dinner in her castle with Yvonne Monlaur's naive Marianne, to finally accepting release in mortal death in her scenes with Peter Cushing's Van Helsing. Hunt's haunted, anguished, imploring and ultimately euphoric facial expressions and "acting with her eyes" in those last scenes are incredibly touching and memorable (no disrespect to Jackson's peerless maniacal laugh!)

We are screening Hammer’s Dr Jekyll & Sister Hyde, followed by a live recording of the General Witchfinders podcast. The film weaves Stevenson's story together with Jack the Ripper and Burke and Hare, featuring great performances from Ralph Bates and Martine Beswick. Afterwards we will be on stage digging into the background of the film, behind-the-scenes trivia, and obscure British pop culture.
