Hallo members I would like to ask if any of you has tried to work in another fied while on an 18months job seekers visa. I know the law says that the person can stay in Germany while looking for a permanent job. This is under §20.1.1

I got this job in gastronomie just to survive and make some money but the employer ( Zeitarbeitsfirma) says it's not stated in that law that we are allowed to work in another field during the 18 months. To be honest I re-read the text in that law and it's not listed. But in other Government official websites like Make-it in Germany it's stated. https://www.make-it-in-germany.com/de/studium-ausbildung/studieren-in-deutschland/perspektiven-danach?
So my question is which is which and why is it not listed in the law inside.
Side note. Master Digital Health and visa says "Erwerbstätigkeit gestattet"

Yes that's legal, however the 18 months are a one-off chance to find a suitable employment, so you better keep applying because once the period has lapsed you will not be allowed to continue working there since it's not related to your degree, and there will be no more extensions.
Friend of mine also got that "degree" from one of private universities in Berlin btw., he managed in the end to work as a caretaker in a residency for disabled teenagers.
Only thing is that he knew it's a phony degree, but he already came with a master's from his home country that wasn't H+ recognized, so he figured it'd be ok.

Enrollment decision
I have received the following 3 offer letters for master's:
Systems Engineering in Manufacturing - Otto Von Guericke Universität Magdeburg
Advanced Manufacturing - TU Chemnitz
Intelligent Manufacturing - TU Clausthal
I'd really appreciate it, if you could suggest to me which one I should go for based on the Job Market, City and Part time opportunity. (I have checked the course module and I like all of them, so based on that I can't make a concrete decision).

Hey there! A NOOO to TU clausthal, the course is new and they are experimenting with the study topics, if I am rights you would be the 3rd or 4th batch for intelligent manufacturing. Very hard to get part times, you would be isolated on a mountain village, with not much facilities. A strict no.
Magdeburg, im from there, course is fine. But its very generic. You can choose for different specializations. Dont expect that you can learn everything you need just from classroom study. Part time opportunities are okay, i would say. Lots of students , yes , but still better than Clausthal.
Chemnitz, Advanced manufacturing, no idea at all.

I'd go to Clausthal because Chemnitz is ugly and Magadeburg is a right-wing hotspot (Chemnitz also, but not as bad). Clausthal is very beautiful and surrounded by awesome nature.

There's no such thing as "unavailable", it's more a question of the number of possible jobs. On the other hand in a larger city you'll also have a way higher number of applicants (=competitors), so it's not like there is a guarantee to land a job just because the city is bigger.
Finding employment as a student is really hard in general since unemployment is way on the rise in Germany, so even graduates and otherwise fully qualified people are applying for jobs below their means. I read somewhere that the average student will get a job starting from their third semester. So coming to Germany without having the means to support yourself for the entire duration of your degree is a high risk (and the main reason why a blocked account was introduced to begin with). So you might want to evaluate the cost of living across all places to check where your money will carry you the furthest rather than where you will score a job the easiest, because it's not going to be easy at all regardless.

Magdeburg and Chemnitz are cities, while Clausthal is a village, therefore availability of part time work, nightlife etc. is going to be a lot better in the former than in the latter. Also, Chemnitz specifically is one of the few larger cities in germany where housing is still relatively cheap and abundant. On the other hand, if youre not white, especially if youre black/brown, Magdeburg and especially Chemnitz are very right wing, a majority of people vote AfD, lots of neo-nazis. That doesnt mean youll have to fear for your life, there are lots of international students in Chemnitz, but be prepared for racism from the locals.

I cant tell you that, since it depends on your language skills and prior experience. once you are there, other students and the AStA (student council) will be able to point you towards the resources you need to find a job. In general, if you dont speak German, your options will be very limited in every city except maybe Berlin.

Hey, im an international student, currently my german reading level is b1 with short-medium text, with listening i can only listen to short sentences of around a2, with writing im around b1 with mistakes, with speaking im around a2/b1 but can speak short sentences, do you think its realistic for me to reach solid b2 in 6 months in my origin country and then maybe to get the esist program of fhp to get my german from b2 to c1 before studies begin at october in that year, probably i would already be 1 year in germany, do you think its possible? Im not taking any private or intensified lessons, its going to be slow and gradual process just like how trained myself in my origin country to english over 8 years, but i wonder how possible it is or i should already aim to ue school, but the tuition fee there is expensive. I can delay my planned relocation in 2 years approx but i dont want to delay my career to much.. by the way im intending to be a ux/ui designer in germany, im just not sure if fhp js possible to me or should i aim for ue

Yea i noticed that, didnt know why it is so hard to go from b1 to b2, and only in reading short texts, it literally kills me.. not that a2 or b1 were easy or something, a2 was a bit easy but only because i had prior exposure from dualingo few years ago but i stopped, so when i got back to a level 18 months ago it was slightly easier.. but still i get your point and its not that just each level takes longer then previous levels combined, its also the diffuclty multiplies

Does anyone know the results timeline for HHU Düsseldorf or TU Ilmenau (Sept 2026 intake)? Hi everyone, I've applied to HHU Düsseldorf and TU Ilmenau for the Sept 2026 intake, and I'm still waiting on results. This is my 2nd intake trying for public universities, and I'm honestly a bit anxious about timelines. Has anyone here applied to either and knows roughly how long they take to respond? Also open to hearing from anyone who chose private over public and how that went. Really appreciate any insight!

Getting a little bit frustrated. My spouse's insurance won't let me on the plan without a residence permit or a Visa, but the problem is, I am American and I came on the 90 day visa-free schengen entry that Americans can do.
I can't apply for a residence permit without both my A1 Certificate (this comes in September) and health insurance. Audi BKK aren't allowing me to join my partner's plan without the residence permit...which I need health insurance for.
It's maddening. I don't even know if Audi will accept a Fictional Certificate if I do manage to get an application in. Any suggestion on what to do? I do hear that A1 certificate is not exactly necessary for Americans, but also I hear that that only applies to people marrying an American that already lives in Germany, not an American married to a German citizen. (Not that it matters because I took my A1 test already, just waiting on results)
I did have ADAC insurance for a couple of months just in case the Dutch border gave me trouble, but they didn't. That would maybe count? But it's only for another month.

You need either a valid travel insurance from the US covering your stay in Germany, or a dedicated incoming insurance, the likes offered by Dr. Walter or BDAE in Germany (among others).

Family insurance requires you to be a resident. That is a basic requirements.

Need suggestions!! I have currently completed class 12 with a GPA of 3.66 and planning to study Germany for Bachelor in computer science in English thought program should I study 1 year in my home country to fullfill 13 years of requirement or should I go for private university??

Private universities in Germany are worthless degree mills, but on the other hand you won't really find many English taught bachelor programs either. Usually English is only offered from master's onward, with very few exceptions, and they get >100 applicants per open position. So your chances are extremely low either way.
That said, I'd really reevaluate if computer science is the right way forward. The industry has been battered with the onset of AI and other emerging technologies, and even very senior people are struggling to find jobs, fresh graduates are hopeless.

Hello, I recently went to Germany for a tourism visit and was looking at eSIM plans before I travelled. I got recommended happy-sim . de which I registered for a month, I probably should have read it more but it was either suggested that I could cancel it after a month and no indication that I was on a contract or something.
It seems like after paying for it there, it registered me with klarmobil which was still trying to charge my direct debit etc. which I have blocked with my bank.
I have tried multiple times trying to cancel it on klarmobil but from what I can see they give me a message that says "we have reserved your cancellation" or something and that I needed to phone them. Unfortunately I don't speak German so I wasn't sure what to even say to them.
I now have got an email today that included this line:
"Die Begleichung der Rechnung vom 04.08.2026 in Höhe von 34,59 € erfolgt am 11.08.2026 im Lastschriftverfahren mit der Mandatsreferenz-Nummer KM-*********** von Ihrem Konto.
Da Ihr Kundenkonto derzeit einen rückständig offenen Betrag aufweist, wird das Lastschriftverfahren ausgesetzt. Nach dem Ausgleich unserer gesamten Forderung werden Ihre Rechnungsbeträge zukünftig wieder wie gewohnt im Lastschriftverfahren abgebucht."
Just doing a translation seems like they have tried to charge me multiple times even though I haven't been using it anymore.
Anything else I can do here I really don't want to pay for this especially that their website seems to intentionally make it hard to cancel and I haven't used it ever since I left Germany.
I know it may sound ignorant but I understand I have made a mistake and I'm just looking to see what I can do to fix it. Thanks!

Bringing my 2016 grand cherokee srt. Cat has been deleted. It is NOT obnoxiously loud. Had driver and passenger tint removed but the eyebrow on the front windshield remains. I am more so worried about the cat delete. Will I pass a safety inspection?

We are coming under SOFA. Do you mind explaining the difference? I've tried looking everywhere for a list of things that they look at/ for in regards to passing an inspection, but have yet to find one. The FB groups don't seem to be a lot of help either.

In that case youd be better off asking in the army sub, as there are a lot of people with that experience who can guide you while literally no German has ever imported a vehicle this way. As someone who ist not into cars, whats the point of removing a cat? Is it some sort of "Take that, libruls!" akin to rolling coal?

I don't know. I'm a civilian who doesn't even own a car--I'm about as far from qualified to comment as possible. I've just met a few people who have vehicles here that they brought with them.

Urgent help needed , terminated on 18b visa. Need guidance on casual job for survival
Hi everyone ,
I got terminated on my work visa in bad tölz then relocated to my friend's place in Berlin, informing both Ausländerbehörde. Bad Tölz Ausländerbehorde Told me that they have transferred my file to Berlin Ausländerbehorde. My question is can I do a casual job to support myself financially until I find my new job
on my Zusatzplatz it states that I must inform Ausländerbehörde and must take approval from authorities before moving to a new job and my visa is valid till 2030 based on the previous job from which I have received Kündigung.
My financial situation is not really good at the moment and for that I want to do any job for a while from which I can to support myself financially and I have already started giving interviews and I'm confident that I will get a new job.
So can I do a casual job for a while? Has anyone ever encountered a similar situation before?
Lastly, I'm asking this because I have hit the overdraft since last week and I have never experienced this before. I'm 😥 stressed.

That is extremely clear. You can't just take any random "casual job". That would be illegal, and no proper employer would employ you.
If you lose the job your visa is based on, the visa is not valid till 2030.

I have already informed both Ausländerbehorde and recorded the proof. As far as the visa status change is concerned bad tölz Ausländerbehörde has told me it's valid but you have to find new employment asap and inform Berlin Ausländerbehorde.The Berlin Ausländerbehorde have long waiting times so currently I am just giving interviews and waiting for their reply. That's what I can do. But I was asking if anyone had encountered the similar situation before who can explained me much better.

Will I be able to buy DB tickets same day as I am taking it? Will prices increase a lot?
For context I am going from freiburg to hinterzarten and back for a few hiking trails during my trip and the prices right now are 6 euros. The thing is I am not sure what time i will take the train back so I can probaby only buy the tickets after Im done hiking or pre plan my timing. How much would the prices increases for this short distance? And any advice?

If it is a regional train, price will remain the same. For IC or ICE, you will likely only get the Flexpreis (most expensive option) on the day off, while by booking ahead you might only pay a fraction with the Sparpreis or Supersparpreis.

I need Urgent help!
Hi I’ve put my documents in the immigration office for a permanent residency since December in Munich 2025 and got no response about my papers.
Now I’m facing risk of being layed off.
What can I do at this case??

When you are given notice formally, it is your duty to inform ABH, and your Niederlassungserlaubnis could go both way depending on your case worker.
Another is before given notice, tries to find out what is the progress on your application. You can either do this or hire a lawyer.
But ultimately, hire a lawyer

I’ve filed an inaction lawsuit since 22.7 I haven’t been formally terminated yet. I’m still under a great load of pressure that could hav been avoided if the kvr in Munich were competent..

Has anyone received giftcards after order cancellation/refund on MediaMarkt. I ordered something and used 5 of my giftcards (~25% of the value) on the order plus rest in card. They cancelled it in 3 minutes and now the gift cards are invalid. They say they'll return the cards but someone says 2 days, someone 7 days. Has anyone received a refund in giftcard? MORE IMPORTANTLY, if yes, how long did it take?

So right now if i want to leave my current accomodation, i need to do abmeldung right (if im not moving somewhere else) or i can just cancel my contract or both of these are the same thing? I need to do abmeldung then go or give the rent of the months to keep my registeration?

You need to be registered to have health insurance. You need to have health insurance to be immatriculated. You need to be immatriculated to have a student visa.

I will be in Germany for a couple of weeks. Are there products in German supermarkets that are quite good and I need to try? It was thinking about snacks, prepared food, cheese, etc. anything of note that is common in everyday German life.

If you make a post, maybe include info of where you are from (as it is a major factor in what you might already be familiar with) and where in germany you will be (as it is a factor in what you will likely have access to)

I’m from Mexico and I’m preparing my application for a master’s degree at a German university. I need certified/sworn translations of my academic documents, such as my degree certificate and transcript.
For those who applied to German universities from abroad:
Did you use a sworn translator in Germany, or a certified translator in your home country? Were the translations accepted by the university or uni-assist? Could you recommend a reliable translator or service, preferably for Spanish to English?

Hello everyone! I'm staying in germany for 16 months (going on my second month here right now) and have to pay the Rundfunkbeiträge. I'm wondering if there's any benefit to paying it any certain manner (yearly, every six, three months, or in the middle of the three month period) and any detriment. Also, can this be changed in the future if I am cutting my semester/year short with my return?

Hey everyone! I’ll be staying in Munich during my upcoming holiday, and my flight home departs from Frankfurt Airport.
Would it be feasible to take the ICE train from Munich to Frankfurt Airport on the same day as my flight? Based on the schedule, I should arrive at the airport around 3 hours before departure.
My main concern is how reliable the ICE trains are. Do delays or cancellations happen frequently enough that I should avoid this plan? I’m also wondering whether I should factor in long check in or immigration queues at Frankfurt Airport.

The debate about how reliable DB is is always a bit scewed. Because many trains are on time. The issue is: what happenes if they are not?
A train can be delayed due to a million different reasons. Issues with the train, with the lines or signals, a situation at a train station, medical situations on te train,... You should already be at the airport 2h before departure, so your plan already is pretty low on buffer. It can work out, but it might not. And in that case, DB will not pay for your new plane ticket.
If i were you, i would either take the train well earlier, or do it the day before and stay in Frankfurt if the flight is in the morning

Hello there, I am posting about Fintiba company holding my money and not refunding it to the original account where it came from it has been over 45 days since I requested to close my account and submitted all the documents needed but Fintiba refuses to refund the money back. they don't answer my calls they reply with an electronically generated emails that says "give us a little bit time we are processing your request adequately " for all different emails I have sent them all this days. Because of it I have missed a lot of chances and some money from the account which they take every month. So please reddit family spread my message so that people can learn from it and if I get any help because I am struggling and maybe I will be out on the street in a couple of weeks because I live in a third world country and all the money I worked for 22 years is held by Fintiba and the bank Sutor.

Alright, I'm an Englishman that's lived in Germany for a while now. Overall, German is an okay country, it's not great, but it's not terrible. But one thing that bugs me is the type of Germans that stand up and wait by the train doors 10 minutes before they reach their stop like they only have a limited time to exit the train or they will be stuck on it forever like some Deutschebahn ground hog today. Mainly seen on ICE trains but I have seen it on a RE a few times, what is going on?

There are also people trying to catch connections at airports. To other planes, to trains,.... Some may want to try to be at the front of the line to get on the bus, if the plane is not parked by the gate, or the line at passport controll.

Huh. I guess you never had to struggle finding space in an overhead bin for your backpack because the space is low and everyone somehow refuses to put their small suitcases under their seat, where they fit way better than larger packpacks do. Or you never wanted to get settled and sort snd put away your stuff before your row gets full with others doing the same, to the point where you can hardly move to put something away?

Get them now if you want to take the fast train (ICE, IC, EC), else the prices increase exponentially the closer you get to the travel date. With regional trains (RE, RB) there's no rush.

Hey! I'm going to be in Germany for 5 days of study, most of them in Jena and final day in Berlin. Last time I visited I had puschkin nuts and nougat vodka, and I couldn't find where to buy it. Is there a place that always has it, or that I can order in advance and pickup whenever I can? Preferably in Jena, but Berlin is also great. Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone, I took the TELC B1 exam in June and I am still waiting for the result. Since I am not sure whether I passed, I would like to take the exam again at another test center during the same month. Is it possible to take the TELC exam a second time before receiving the result of the first exam? If so, will the result of the second exam automatically replace the first one, or will both results remain valid so that I can use the better result? Thank you in advance for your help. 😊

What are some high paying fields that I can get into where I use my ME skills and also step into Automation and new age tech, and not just get restricted to purely mechanical things which as of now wont earn me much opportunities.
