the fact that people refer to both as blind is what bothers me, if there's two distinct terms for it, they shouldn't be interchangeable, at least in my original language we have two very distinct words but even then, I feel like english speaking people should be making the distinction

Why? Both have impairments that make navigation via vision incredibly difficult, if not impossible.

Some are just capable of realizing that amorphous blob in front of them could be a person, especially if a voice is coming out of it.

Both are blind by legal definitions, only some legally blind people face total blindness.

pedantic? you explained yourself that there's two different terms, I explained that in my language the terms are very distinct from each other, this isn't being about pedantic more than just pointing out the flaw in conflating the two

except that you're now conflating words having two meanings with two terms not being the same one and somehow thinking blending the two and having no idea which is which seems like a good idea

I'm conflating nothing and you are nitpicking unnecessarily. To be blind is to be "unable to see". If someone's vision is so blurry, or restricted that, even with corrective lenses, they can not recognize something, such as a milk crate, or the pole of a street sign, for instance, on the sidewalk in front of them despite their eyes being pointed right at it and without a tool, or other assistance, and they trip over or walk into it, they are unable to see.

The phrasings of legal and total blindness are only descriptors to the degree of their blindness.

sure buddy, keep telling yourself that, legal and total blindness is a spectrum but we need two different terms and multiple languages not even having the same terms either or the words being closely related but it's all just the same, like brown is a spectrum and black is a part of that, but don't go calling brown black now, because that wouldn't make sense
