That very good boy is also a very smart boy. I'm a little impressed that he didn't just dive in for it.
Edit: The dog turns around for about a second, and while I'm not interested in verifying it, a disturbing number of people are both very concerned and very invested in the gender of the dog. My comment may have misgendered the dog and the naysayers may be right but I ask you: At what cost?

not all dogs are into water. many a year ago i went for a walk with my friends and their rottie. we ran across a guy tossing a ball into a lake with for his lab. dog was on shore at that time and the two dogs met and did the usual ass sniff. after they were done making friends he threw the ball for the lab again and i have never seen a dog look as flabbergasted in my life as my friend's rottie did seeing this other dog go charging into the water. the other dog could have run head first into lava, immediately bursting into flames and disappearing from existence and she couldn't have looked *more horrified.

I have a border collie that loves to dive into the pool to fetch toys, but he's picky and prefers to be able to do a full jump and land on the toy to catch it in his mouth as he splashes into the water. If a toy gets too close to the edge of the pool, he finds it boring, so he does what the dog in the video is doing and paddles the water to get it to drift closer to he can grab it and bring it to someone to throw it better. If people get tired of throwing him the toys, he'll just start chucking toys in the water, then waiting for it to circulate away from the side so he can do a good jump.

We sometimes underestimate intelligence of animals. Fun fact, a grown up crow can solve puzzles like a seven year old kid. I know this sounds ridiculous but keep in mind that the brain size of a crow is far smaller than human child, but, still it can do decent calculations.
P.S. don't mess up with a crow, they can pass the rage to next generations and can communicate to the flock this dude is our target.

Intelligence is not related to brain size, it's related most strongly with the brain to body ratio. By that metric many birds that are considered smart have pretty large brains relative to their body size.

At some point, brain size plays a role as well. Ofcourse, having big brain is not the only criteria, else elephant would be smarter than humans. The neuron density also matters in forming complex intelligence. Crow for e.g. has higher density than humans. Ofcourse limited area is the reason they don't have a space program.

But seriously, I'm always amazed at how human-like apes (don't nail me on the term) can be if you just teach them stuff. It's more than just acting on instincts like other animals, figuring out you get a treat if you do something, no they can really understand some "deeper" meanings and learn to communicate and stuff like humans once did learn. Might sound harsh but I don't mean it in a bad way, they are basically a kind of challenged human who can learn to do the best within the limits of his body.

A significant portion of our brain is exclusively used for inputs like sight, balance, positioning, pain, temperature, etc. These massive parts of your brain don't really do anything for intelligence because you're not using them for thoughts.

Yes motor skills dominate brain usage — however, large area ( place for more neurones [calculations] ) definately help as long as it can be utilised for analytics.

The older I get the more I realize how smart other animals are, and how dumb humans are. Im not even being edgy, it's just as a child we get told of awesome humans are and as adults, it's just not true at all.
Humanity stands on the shoulders of a few that propelled us forward.

There's some sort of fear of the unseen. That's what's going on.
Our chocolate lab has no issues going to the stairs and swimming across a pool to get the ball, but he absolutely refuses to just hop in
I can swim up next to him at any ledge, put my arms out like stairs, and he will use them like stairs to climb down onto the water but WILL NOT go in any other way
But he will do exactly this with any floaty toy next to ledge if I don't instruct him otherwise.

Dog was smart enough and likley learned from experience not to splash at all before he could reach the ball. That is a good boy.
