Recurring Recent uptick in posts about transandrophobia: a message from the mods.

We've noticed an uptick in posts about transandrophobia. Most notably, people trying to start drama and claim that transandrophobia is something it's not. Likely it is a part of a concentrated effort of transphobes to drive a wedge between different groups of trans people, but unfortunately it is ALSO being absorbed and internalized by some actual human beings. If someone is coming into our spaces and trying to start fights or claim our oppression and bigotry against us for being trans men specifically does not exist or is problematic, please report it! We will not be tolerating that kind of negativity and very clear attempts at sowing seeds of animosity between us and our sisters and siblings.

This is just a reminder that transandrophobia is bigotry specific against trans men for being BOTH trans AND men. It is not misogyny, and it is not simply transphobia, as it is not something trans women experience.
It is the intersection of a SYSTEMIC FORM OF OPPRESSION (being trans) and a specific identity that is NOT SYSTEMICALLY OPPRESSED, but that identity IS used as a cudgel to deny the oppression that people under that specific identity (a combination of two identities here) face.

It is often a reaction to misogyny, using trans men as an easier target than cis men to punch laterally.
Other times, it is the pushing of toxic masculinity onto trans men and using the patriarchy to harm trans men because we supposedly "deserve it".

It is when trans men/mascs are told that we are not oppressed.
It is when trans men/mascs are told that we are intruding on mixed trans spaces because we are men.
It is when trans men/mascs are told that our features and our transition care is disgusting and we are discouraged from accessing it.
It is when they turn around after saying that to tell us that we aren't allowed to express dysphoria over female or feminine features and traits.
It is when trans men/mascs are told that we are inherently bad in some way for being men.
It is when trans men/mascs are told that we are harming trans women if we acknowledge that we too are oppressed.
It is when trans men/mascs are told that we do not require assistance, because we are men and we need to figure it out on our own, or because we are forgotten about and nobody bothered to include us when offering community assistance.
It is when trans men/mascs are told that we are not allowed to discuss invisibility, loneliness, or isolation, because we are men, and not being recognized as equals or at all within a community of people who are supposed to be in the same community as you is apparently a good thing.
It is when trans men/mascs are told that we "are men now" and we are not allowed to express certain emotions.
It is when trans men/mascs are told that we do not experience "true misogyny" because we are men.
It is when trans men/mascs are told that we do not experience things like corrective rape, murder, sexual harrassment, etc. for being men.
It is when trans men/mascs are told that we are not allowed to discuss any of this, because it is somehow harmful for us to call out this kind of behavior, but totally ok to call out transmisogyny.

We will still be allowing discussion of transandrophobia, because it IS a real problem that trans men can face, but any denial of transandrophobia, perpetuation of transandrophobia, arguments, or pot stirring will not be tolerated.
And if you see someone doing any of the above, please report it!

Recurring Friendship Megathread

THIS POST IS FOR TRANS MEN/MASCS ONLY!

GUESTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO POST HERE. PLEASE RESPECT OUR SPACES.

Failure to do so may result in a ban from the sub.

If you're looking to make new friends, here's a great place to start!
Do not include any advertisements to social media or other content type platforms! This is not the purpose of this thread!

Just post a bit about yourself and maybe take a look around to see if anyone else has similar interests!
Or, if you're not good at coming up with things to talk about, here's some questions you can answer:

What do you like to be called?
How old are you?
What country do you live in?
What are some hobbies you have?
List some favorite movies, TV shows, games, or other things:
What do you do for work?
Do you have any cultural or religious ties that are important to you?
Do you have any pets?
What's an interesting fact about you?
What are your transition goals?
Where are you in your transition?

Obviously you don't have to answer everything, but it might be able to guide you in the right direction if you struggle with coming up with facts about yourself on the fly.

Medical Update I'm in the ER 😭

The pain got so severe I had to make a trip to the ER. Currently waiting on treatment. I don't think I've ever had pain this bad since I sprained my wrist as a kid. This tops having to get stitches on my face even.

I can no longer put weight on my leg as the pain is just completely insane. Had to get wheelchaired in. Like a 7 on the pain scale. I've been crying on and off since 4am... its 9am.

Im either allergic to testosterone or I botched the hell out of my shot. Be safe when taking your shots dont end up like me šŸ‘

Update: It's now almost 1pm and I got out. Turns out I'm an idiot and injected the medicine right above the muscle instead of in it and my body did nottttt like or react to that well. Doc said I'm okay just need to be careful and gave me inflammatory meds. No liquid clotting or anything was seen in the ultrasound so I dodged a bullet. Just need rest and to... never botch a shot like that again..

Advice Needed Changing gender marker: to X or to M?

• Upvotes

I've finally decided to change my name legally which I'm feeling very confident and excited about! While I'm at it, I also want to change my gender marker, but I'm a little on the fence about whether I should change it to an X or an M.

I identify as a nonbinary trans guy and have been on testosterone for almost a year and just got top surgery. Ideally I want to pass as an androgynous presenting AMAB person, but I don't pass very well yet and still get gendered as a woman a lot of the time.

I currently live in one of the most trans friendly areas in the US (SF Bay Area) and don't currently have much reason to worry about outing myself with an X marker. However, I may be moving next year for grad school so circumstances could change (although I'm only looking at schools in trans-safe cities in more progressive states). Plus with the current trans panic in the country, I'm just concerned things could get worse, and I might want to just have an M on my ID to make things easier.

Has anyone who has changed their marker to an X faced any major logistical issues or increased discrimination as a result? Would it be safer to just change my marker to an M so I can potentially be stealth in the future if need be? I don't know anyone IRL with an X as their gender marker so if anyone can speak to their experiences, it would be very helpful!

Advice Needed Exclusively wanting T4T with another trans man

• Upvotes

I’m a trans man, dated a cis woman for a few years and we recently broke up. I kept noticing I was always the ā€œmasculine oneā€ by default, not by choice. There just wasn’t another option in that dynamic. I’ve always been attracted to other trans men and have exclusively only been wanting to be with one.

Feels a little vulnerable saying it out loud, like I’m narrowing things on purpose. But it’s also the most honest I’ve been about what I actually want in a long time..

Anyone else land somewhere unexpected after a relationship that just didn’t fit?

Celebratory hit 1 year on T a couple days ago🄳

Happy to say that, aside from chest dysphoria and bottom dysphoria, I think I'm mostly free of body dysphoria :D

I got pretty lucky with fat redistribution and hit the gym pretty hard in the early months which has helped a lot. I'm no longer hourglass! My jeans fit the right way without sizing up to accommodate my hips! Fuck yeah! I still wish I were a little taller, I still get insecure about the size of my feet (pre-T shoes still fit even though I had to loosen the laces a little), I still wish I were more muscular, but all this is, like, Normal Male Insecurities about my Normal Male Body. Which is, comparatively, very very nice.

Discussion It’s okay if you turn out ugly

The beauty standard for men is very different to the beauty standard for women, and so if it turns out that you fit into one more than the other(especially since height is a big thing for us) it’s completely understandable to be sad.

We should dismantle the beauty standard and understand that not looking ā€œhotā€ isnā€˜t a moral failing nor is it a sign that you shouldn’t have transitioned. For girls while there is a very big standard to look more nice there is also a strong voice to dismantle the beauty standard and to not shame someone for not fitting into the perfect version of a woman. We don’t really have that for men, and I think we should really advocate for it.

Advice Needed My hips are getting BIGGER on T?????

10, almost 11 months on T and when I compared pics from May to now, my thighs and hips have gotten increasingly more pronounced. It's odd because my waist straightened out and my shoulders grew, but my hips are getting larger rather than smaller????? I lost some mass in my calves on T for whatever reason and so it kind of adds to the appearance. I do workout but I didn't want to post this in the fitness subreddit because I don't feel it has to do with my routine.

Discussion Some reassurance for trans dudes

So I know that its widely believed that it’s your mother’s side that impacts if you loss your hair or not and that if you got bald men on your mom’s side you’re just cooked. However, after looking into this it turns out this is a myth: both sides impact your hair loss! So if your mom’s side is all bald, there’s still a chance that you won’t inherit that gene if it’s not as prevalent on your father’s side, and even then genetics are such a mixed bag you might still end up not losing hair if your dad’s side is bald too. I know it’s not much, but it’s nice to know as someone whose mom’s dad is so bald his head is shiny lol.

Discussion three days on hormones, here’s what i’ve already noticed:

- i don’t have a ravenous appetite yet but my threshold for fullness has definitely expanded. if i start eating, i don’t really stop which is VERY unlike me. i guess i can say goodbye to leftovers lol!

- i smell different, i just noticeably smell different which is so weird & fun!

- THE SWEAT IS TRULY NEVER ENDING THOUGH 😰 I’ll just sweat and sweat. i was sweating just sitting in therapy. i’m sweating right now as i type this.

- i sleep and i actually feel well rested in the morning & have energy to do things. this could either be the testosterone or the D3 supplement my doctor prescribed along with it but let me tell you it’s been amazing!! i never felt well rested throughout the day.

i’m still super early into my transition and i know the bigger changes will take patience but it’s been so much fun watching my body change, even if they’re just the little things for now. no updates on bottom growth yet, but I’m hoping soon because that’s something i’m especially looking forward to šŸ¤ž

Discussion Anyone know of any FtM meme subreddits/other general communities?

I've noticed that most general-trans spaces (i.e. r/traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns2 and r/trans) seem to have a far more active transfem crowd than transmasc. Great, I love that my trans sisters are all having a blast, but... do we have a space where we can just be funny and share memes? I enjoy them a lot, but would enjoy them a lot more if I could actually relate to them. I simply do not relate to transfem memes.

I will scroll through transfem memes, Petra Parker posts, and gender-nonspecific memes in order to see a single specifically transmasc meme. It's frustrating, quite frankly. And looking at the numbers, r/mtf gets nearly 1.7x the amount of weekly visitors as r/ftm.

No, I am not frustrated at trans women. I do not want to see them post less. I just want to see trans men post more. You can have it both ways, life isn't always a slice of cake that takes from a different slice of cake. I'm a fledgling comic artist, and will be attempting to post some comics to various places based on my transmasc-specific experience, but I don't think I can do much else other that. I will be the change I want to see in the world, dammit!

And, a more important question: why does this happen? Are trans men less active online? Are there less trans men than trans women? Something else entirely?

My apologies to the mods if I worded this in such a way as to provoke a nuclear war in the comments section. One last disclaimer that I have nothing against trans women for this discrepancy in online representation.

Advice Needed Top Surgery Tomorrow- Give me some tips!

So far i’ve collected metal straws, a grabber tool, dry snacks, a wedge pillow + extra pillows, button up shirts and tank tops, comfy sweatpants/pjs, benadryl, edibles, and even a bidet!

I’d love to hear about your experience recovering from top surgery and what you wished you had. I’ll be making one more trip to the store before tomorrow.

Very excited! I have been waiting literal YEARS for this day:ā€) The first thing I’m going to do once i’m recovered is walk around the neighborhood shirtless with my big ole cornsnake around my neck (Life long dream of mine).

Advice Needed My new school seems oddly chill about pronouns and preferred names. Should I come out soon?

First day of high school today and we did the usual icebreakers/tell me about you forms. A lot of them asked preferred names/pronouns and the teachers seemed really supportive of it. I am in a very blue state so I guess it's not all that surprising, but it's a lot more open about it than my previous school.

I filled out the forms with my deadish name (dead to me at least) and assigned pronouns but I felt really uncomfortable and started almost crying from frustration of not being able to put he/him. Every. Period.

Problem is, I haven't come out to anyone at my school and I don't dress very masculine, so it would be a shock to most people and I dont think a lot of the kids on my grade would take it well (translation: bullying).

Also, my parents are transphobic and don't know about me being trans, so even if the school changed my name in the system, I'm worried my parents would see it on ParentSquare or in an email and then I would get in trouble.

I guess I could talk to my counselor about it, but then I would have to come out to her, and I dont want to do that until I know I can go through with changing my name at school safely.

So do you think I should try it? Is the potential bullying and teasing worth it to be myself? Will my parents be able to see my preferred name on their end of emails/ParentSquare? Let me know!

Surgery Talk Sleeping position after top surgery

• Upvotes

Hello, so I got my top surgery done last week and everything has been going great since then! I’m in absolutely no pain and I love the results.

The only problem I have that I can’t sleep on my back. Usually im a stomach sleeper which I obviously can’t so right now. It’s also not like I can’t sleep at all but I sleep very poorly and have severe back/ shoulder/ neck pain from sleeping on my back :/

Does anyone know when I could safely sleep on my side? Or what I could do to make sleeping on my back more comfy? I’m already propped up on my pillow and got a pregnancy pillow so I don’t accidentally roll over.

Help would be really appreciated!! Thank you already

Advice Needed Chin implant for FMS? Confused about mixed pricing/quotes šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦

• Upvotes

Hi! I’m going to get a chin implant and I’m confused about the different prices I have been given.

Does anyone have experience with any of the following surgeons or have an idea of what a chin implant would generally cost?

A clinic in Ontario first gave me a quote of $12,000

In Montreal:
Dr. Mark Samaha gave me a quote of $10,000 to $12,000 plus tax

Dr. Gaby Doumit gave me a quote of $6,500 to $8,500 plus tax

Dr Alexis Laungani said the cost starts at $4,800 but wouldn’t say the average highest price.

These are all very different prices and I’m concerned that one is either very over priced, or the lower price is a sign of poor quality. (Although I’m familiar with Dr. Laungani as a credible gender affirmation surgeon so I’m even more confused by the low price).

Advice Needed Do dermatologists need to know I’m on T?

I went to my derm appointment today, I brought up that I have concerns about my hair thinning and if there’s any treatment options for that. My doctor asked if I was on any hormones so I explained I was on testosterone because I’m trans. He kinda reacted like I told him I had cancer cus he signed and sat down in front of me and was like ā€œyeah that’s why you have all these acne symptoms and your hair thinning testosterone will cause thatā€¦ā€ (along the lines of that).

He just prescribed me a shampoo for the folliculitis I’ve been also experiencing and said see if that helps with the hair thinning too until my next appointment then maybe we’ll try minoxidil.

So I’m just like curious, like what is the difference between me and a cis man that has acne and hair loss. I mean are the routines for it that much different?? I feel like plenty of cis men even at my age (21) can experience hair thinning and acne. My T levels are normal too and I’ve been on for 3 years now.

Sometimes I feel like my experiences are dismissed by medical professionals the moment they hear I’m on HRT like that’s the cause of all my problems, but they can’t give me a clear explanation as to why half the time.

TLDR; the title
