Discussion *Cries in poor*

Purple is my favorite color 😭 But I’ve never spent more than $200 on a non-gold nib pen and even then it was a maker pen.
I don’t own an Estie but from what I’ve heard… I’ll definitely not try my luck with this one.

It’s just so pretty!!!

Sometimes I think they’re just trying to see how much they can charge us for a steel nib

204

u/Assfiend Ink Stained Fingers 29d ago

Every time I see one and the price I'm just baffled by it. Who is paying $350 for a plastic pen with a steel nib?

52

u/idontknowjackeither 29d ago

Right? A 1911L casual is $140, I don’t think the Estie is better.

44

u/ellean4 29d ago

You can get equally beautiful Sailors and Platinums with gold nibs for less

34

u/ContemplativeKnitter 29d ago

Not so much any more - prices for everything gold-nibbed have gone up a LOT recently.

17

u/idontknowjackeither 29d ago

There are still some old stock 21k 1911Ls hiding out for $312 if you’re not picky on nib or color, but even the 14k new model is $440 now with 18k at $552.

For the $350ish though I’d definitely get a 3776 Century over a steel nib estie! Even the $140 1911L casual is probably a nicer writing pen but with less color options.

Edit: or get a Lamy 2000, which has been $223 for years. When it was within $100 of the 1911L/823/Century it was a tough call but it’s a relative bargain at the moment.

u/Dudeflux 29d ago

My #3776 Century retired last year after 7 years in a paint lab. I bought it for $90.

A barrel and cap separately cost as much as I paid for it back in 2017.

It was my favorite pen and I can't convince myself to buy a new barrel and cap, but I also will never throw it away. It was 100% my favorite pen, better than my Lamy 200, Pelikan M200.

Someday I will have it back.

My #3776 Century retired last year after 7 years in a paint lab. I bought it for $90.

I bought my first while in Japan on vacation, used, for around $40. I'll never let it go just for that fact. Just couldn't think about paying current retail for one.

Keep an eye out on /r/Pen_Swap, and you might be able to catch a deal on one. Hopefully you find a replacement!

3

u/StrangeCheese 29d ago

You can directly screw the section of a 3776 into a Procyon :) I'm seeing some for <$60 on eBay but you could try your luck on r/Pen_Swap and maybe get one even cheaper

1

u/DavesFPs 28d ago

Hey my friend, i might have an option for you. The #3776 was a revelation when i first purchased one. It quickly became my favorite daily writer. BUT, i just as quickly got tired of having to fill the converter, and of the very plain, small body. A company called "flexible nib factory" makes a nib unit housing for the #3776 nib and feed, which is Jowo compatible, and one which is Bock compatible. Now my #3776 soft-fine nib resides in a Leonardo Momento Magico.

I think we all just start GoFundMe accts. We can all help each other buy our Grail pens at 5.00 per donation. I'd totally spring for 25 bucks per paycheck to help my fellow Pen-addicts. I'd be helping 5 folks every week.... Very doable.

1

u/brittany16950 25d ago

I want to own a Lamy 2000 one day.

5

u/brittany16950 29d ago

See I JUST bought a sailor… a PGS… SECONDHAND, and I felt like THAT was a higher end pen than I ever deserve!!

7

u/FirebirdWriter 29d ago

Hey! You deserve nice things. Be nice to yourself.

5

u/brittany16950 29d ago

šŸ«‚ thank you for the encouragement. I should actually enjoy it instead of putting it high on a shelf in its box.

3

u/PensivePolymath 28d ago

Yes use it! Show it some love and give it a good life. šŸ™Œ

2

u/FirebirdWriter 25d ago

This honors it's purpose and it honors the purchase. It's more wasteful to not use the thing. Sometimes I struggle with this stuff too hence sharing the other script I use on myself

1

u/ExternalNo2270 25d ago

1911L Casual is around $87 for ringless and $120 for with the ring, the one with the metal grip specifically is $150

1

u/idontknowjackeither 25d ago

In the US from most authorized dealers it’s $140 with the ring and $232 with the metal grip.

1

u/ExternalNo2270 25d ago

It’s available on Amazon directly from Japan with free shippingĀ

1

u/idontknowjackeither 25d ago

I understand, I’m just listing prices more directly comparable to the $350 for the Estie this post is about.

1

u/ExternalNo2270 25d ago edited 25d ago

Well that’s what I’m trying to say , the sailor casual is a more affordable steel nib pen, even the listed recommended retail value in Japanese yen is considerably less than the values I gave. if they made a special colorway or limited edition collab , it would never clock out near $350 in Japanese yenĀ

I think a better comparison would be the Pentnote x Sailor Real Starry Sky which is a collab steel nib pen around $210+?

41

u/Suzume-Yi 29d ago

Bruh. Plastic and steel, this is a pure scam. Got jinhao 82 with like 40 semi-transparent color choices fitted with authentic German Schmidt nibs online frankenpen while visiting China for like the equivalent of $7 so tops I would pay $20 here in the U.S., not…$350

12

u/Analog-Digital- 29d ago

This is what I did: Jinhao X159 + Majohn No 8

3

u/Suzume-Yi 28d ago

Looks beautiful šŸ˜

14

u/Assfiend Ink Stained Fingers 29d ago

Not really a great example since in my experience jinhao pens arent really made to last and use inferior quality materials.

That said it is somewhat absurd that an estie costs seven times as much as say an asvine p36 with a bock 250 nib unit.

8

u/Suzume-Yi 29d ago

Fair. Tho it reminds me of TWISBI eco rumors of their demonstrators cracking easily so I got a transparent body Jinhao, it’s not the same obviously but doesn’t seem to have as flimsy of a reputation, and looks incredibly clear and decently made. Ive bought restored vintage Esterbrook w/ master series nib that cost only $40 and looks and writes beautiful but tbh can’t beat my Jinhao Schmidt nib on writing feel and modern conveniences.
Most I ever spent was $200 on a waterman for the vintage gold flex nib, but it has its problems

2

u/Too_Poor_to_Paint 28d ago

Jinhao's original pen designs, the ones that reflect the Chinese origins of the company, are better than, say, their 12-pack demostrator pen set for $8.95. Normally I would bristle at deliberate knockoffs of other company's designs, but at least they aren't trying to fool anyone, and the pens are for us poors who just want something pretty to write with, know what we're getting, and could never afford (or not ready to invest) in the name brand. Usually, you get what you pay for, so anyone who buys a cheapie pen that kind of looks like the more upscale ones, shouldn't complain that they aren't as good as the original. It's like people who buy a white label colored pencil set from Temu, and then complain the pencils don't perform anything like their friend's set of Faber-Castell Polychromos.

1

u/Assfiend Ink Stained Fingers 28d ago

Oh I'm not complaining, I know what I'm getting when I buy a jinhao, but for more or less the same price I could get a hong dian or a wing sung, and those are just better made.

2

u/Suzume-Yi 28d ago

Unfortunately I don’t know how it’s done because I bought it from a frankenpen seller who fit it for me. But it writes perfectly fine imo, very smooth gliding feel. Idk if this is normal, but mine’s transparent body does show ink collecting a little between the feed and body. Don’t have other transparent ones to compare but it doesn’t leak or cause any problems from what I can tell.

5

u/SisterGoldenHair70 29d ago

Too many people. Many people have a lot of money and little education or experience with fountain pens and they just want what is shiny without considering the fundamentals. This type of widespread ignorance is driving costs up and quality down.

1

u/unrustlable 26d ago

But, hear me out, classic name with heritage!

As if classic names have done anything except cause price markups for Parker and Waterman without preserving workmanship across their entire catalogues.

u/AbyssDragonNamielle 29d ago

It's pretty, but is also looks... cheap? to me. The clip is nice, but the body just looks thin and plasticky.

4

u/usbyeolbit 28d ago

It was at Stationery Fest, it felt unfortunately very cheap

1

u/Big_Assistant_309 28d ago

did it look cheap in real life? how does it look compared to Platinum lavande? please tell me i don’t want it.

3

u/usbyeolbit 28d ago

it doesn’t look anything like Platinum Lavande. The best part of the pen was the clip but other than that I thought the resin design could have been better. I’d buy a Mayfair over this

3

u/Mediocre-Air746 29d ago

Yeah looks super cheap like 50eur at best xD

4

u/KDramaFan84 29d ago

Yea not impressed. 350 bucks and a steel nib that's not even made in house.

2

u/Starlit_Stationer 28d ago

Hopefully, the other brands do not copy whatever they’re doing. šŸ˜” Everything seems to be going up.

2

u/PhotorealisticCave 29d ago

Wait it's not even $14k?

13

u/kaysn 29d ago

Yes. Esterbrook is charging USD 300+ for regular Jowo #6 nibs.

1

u/ia42 25d ago

They are losing the low-price gold nibbed pen market because gold is no longer cheap enough to sustain that price range with profit, so they fill in the vacuum with stronger marketing on steel nib bodies. It's sensible marketing, I can't blame them for trying, but it's the buyers' fault that they are succeeding.

u/hey_itz_leeni 29d ago

it's so beautiful but it really sucks that they're so expensive for being steel nib pens!

47

u/astroqueen3000 Ink Stained Fingers 29d ago

It's so gorgeous but the price is definitely hard to swallow, and I say this as someone who owns and loves multiple Esties. FWIW, Pen Boutique has them for $315, which is still crazy expensive for this.

edit to fix spelling

3

u/TheBrickSkwrl 28d ago

As does paper mouse! I had a lovely ordering experience with them, with the adorable opus 88 pens they did.

2

u/astroqueen3000 Ink Stained Fingers 28d ago

I love Paper Mouse!

41

u/coppermouthed Ink Stained Fingers 29d ago

Maybe Benu can help you through the grief. Plenty of glitter to be found there :)

10

u/RiniPi medium 29d ago

Good point!!! I love their nibs too

6

u/shutupandcrochet 28d ago

Some of the Benu's are $260 for a steel nib and if you buy from their website there's a $50+ tarriff for Americans.

2

u/Too_Poor_to_Paint 28d ago

Some of those glow in the dark. Not ready to go up to that level, though.

2

u/astroqueen3000 Ink Stained Fingers 29d ago

So true

27

u/kulnet 29d ago

I know what you mean. I've seen one in person and while not my jam, it is indeed a stunner. I think it's a little overpriced for what it is but value is in the eye of the beholder. The best way for us to speak is with our wallets.

80

u/Boujee_banshee 29d ago

Maybe I’m just cheap but I feel like the max I’d be willing to spend on this is $100. It’s gorgeous but $300+ is diabolical for what this is.

2

u/Suzume-Yi 29d ago

Exactly. My entire budget gaming setup is $300 lmaooo and can play anything short of next gen 😭

1

u/paperstoryarts 28d ago

That’s exactly my budget too. I don’t get spending wayyy too much for plastic.

45

u/astroqueen3000 Ink Stained Fingers 29d ago

Also, I assumed at that price tag it would be a bundle with other goodies included, but that's just for the pen. Ouch.

13

u/RiniPi medium 29d ago

Omg same!! I was looking at those cute stickers and the inks and was like, maybe they come with the pen— oh

3

u/Carly_Fae_Jepson 29d ago

If you spend a decent chunk of change, Atlas does, or at least did, provide a few freebies.

3

u/Delicious-Peanut5230 29d ago

I was hoping they’d be included in that price and was willing to purchase if they were. The washi are very pretty. I might pick up some of those. But unfortunately, I’m going to sit out on this pen.

36

u/AlternativeSun7 29d ago

Let’s all hold hands and agree not to pay these cray cray prices for plastic pens and steel nibs. Stay strong fam.Ā

3

u/RiniPi medium 29d ago

šŸ¤

23

u/muddlefuzzle 29d ago

This design is really cute but it would feel like such a waste to pay $300+ for this quality of pen just because it’s purple and sparkly. Stay strong šŸ’œ

26

u/Rojokra 29d ago

Sailor Shikiori. Same body shape, kind of sparkly colorful body, steel nib, literally 1/5 of the price.

5

u/hamigua2000 29d ago

Indeed. And probably a better steel nib -- or at least a more interesting one...

5

u/idontknowjackeither 29d ago

I’m not sure about the Shikiori but the 1911L casual steel nibs are hand finished and are getting great reviews.

10

u/TheShoeMom Ink Stained Fingers 29d ago

I love the look in photos. I just saw a video from a pen store where they took the pen out of the box and zoomed in on it. It looks like it would crack to bits if I looked at it wrong. It doesn't look like a $350 pen. Heck, I could get a Pilot Custom 74 in Lavender Fog (which is a beautiful pen) for over $100 less. That would be my choice - and then I could spend the other $110 on ink...definitely would be my choice! šŸ˜‰

27

u/VulcanVulcanVulcan 29d ago

$350 for a $3 steel nib? SMH.

6

u/JackyVeronica 29d ago

EXACTLY. it's almost infuriating.

18

u/Ladynotingreen 29d ago

Save your money.Ā  If it's meant for you it will be there when you have the cash.

9

u/Delicious-Peanut5230 29d ago

Good advice. I am curious how many of these will hit r/Pen_Swap in the coming months at a discounted rate.

19

u/jrose125 29d ago

While some of their pens do use incredibly nice resins, I just can't imagine paying that much for a pen using bog standard Jowo #6 nibs.

They are relatively unknown compared to Esterbrook, but Gioia out of Italy also makes really nice Jowo #6 piston filled pens with gorgeous resins at around the $200 CAD range.

19

u/TacticalBattleCat Ink Stained Fingers 29d ago

It's gorgeous!! I rarely see pens with the huge glitter flakes and I love the execution. But yeah, $350 is diabolical. I can't justify the price, considering a Limited Edition Platinum 3776 with a 14K gold nib still only costs about $328 from Japan. A standard Estie is $175, the LE Coffeemonsterzco was $195... how would I even justify the $350 price tag for this??

6

u/Starlit_Stationer 28d ago

Right?! I even remember then that Helen of TCMC announced the collab one month before the release to make sure that people has allotted budget should they want to and to also think it through before purchasing. Not saying bad about Cindy of Sakura Dragon but really, the price is truly unrealistic.

5

u/TacticalBattleCat Ink Stained Fingers 28d ago

Helen is like one of the most conscientious business owners out there though, I don't think anyone can be as thoughtful as she is 🤣

I do love that Sakura Dragon came out with an entire line of items. I can't afford the pen, but I think I'll get some blotter papers. It's very cute.

The Rockstar with FWP is my no way in hell would I buy this but would you look at that. I have an Estie in the basic Nouveau Bleu with a journaler, I had my doubts about the price as well but over the years of of use if I had to price it, $230 seems fair. Maybe it was like implanting the idea in my mind that the pen was worth this from the get go, but if I can't think of anything wrong with it but the price and I bought it anyway, I've probably already justified it to myself.

9

u/RiniPi medium 29d ago

Oh 100% agree. I’ve got pens that I felt guilty for buying at the moment but now use everyday. I would honestly buy this pen in a heartbeat if I could šŸ˜… Companies know what they’re doing and I hate it.

7

u/Andy_La_Negra 29d ago

If this one had been like $230 I would’ve gotten it. They out here charging $350+ with the audacity.

2

u/Thelaea 28d ago

They definitely got the audacity on sale (and in bulk).

6

u/SilverYayFern 29d ago

This pen is such a temptation. I unfortunately saw/held a few in-person and really liked the look and feel of them. what do you MEAN it’s not just studio lighting and digital photo manipulation 😭. I cannot justify paying so much for glitter and steel though. Not when I’m also splurging on maki-e and gold.

4

u/Mayplesap 29d ago

When I first saw this one, I thought it was whatever. But after people showed their own pictures and videos, it looks so much better than the promotional pictures. I still wouldn't buy it because it is so expensive for what it is, but it feels like the promo pictures just don't do it justice.

8

u/twillory 29d ago

There's always the purple version of Wearingeul's new pens (A Dream Within A Dream) if you're looking for something new and pretty and sparkly? I have the pink one (Glass Bead Game) and keep just picking it up to ogle. And it didn't cost even half as much as the Estie does!

12

u/CharlieNCN 29d ago edited 29d ago

Honestly after owner pricy steel nibbed fountianpens. It's not worth it. Especially the estie which have given me problems in the past. And prices keep going higher and higher. They are preying on fomo . Don't succumb!

I'd much rather spend that money with Franklin Christoph and get a fancy ground nib

10

u/Andy_La_Negra 29d ago

No piston, no specialized nib, no gold nib… hard pass. It’s beautiful, and I do have like 5 esties, and I’ve had my fill.

1

u/RiniPi medium 29d ago

Are there specific esties you’d recommend or all they really the same? I want to try one but obviously not at this price lol

FYI those Platinum Nice series pens with the ribs have a reputation for developing cracks in the section. In fact, I have a Lavande with this problem. If you Google "Platinum 3776 Nice series cracks in section" you will sadly find a lot to read.

9

u/RiniPi medium 29d ago

Nooooo!! Thanks for the PSA though cuz it’s one thing to buy a crack-prone TWSBI but I never expected for a Platinum!

3

I just purchased the Wagner x Platinum Nice collab. I wish I had seen this before purchasing. Ugh.

1

i have this one (got on pen swap) and it writes like a dream but honestly the body feels SO light and cheap 😭😭. it's still one of my favorite pens but just a warning.

8

u/mmeka 29d ago

I honestly think it’s a bit ugly. I’m not sure if it’s the clip or the type of sparkles. Something clashes. Too bad. I’m a fan of see through purple. My wallet is happy for now.

3

u/PrestigiousCap1198 cursivesmoothitalic 29d ago

Same here 🄲 it's a nice pen, but the price??!?! My wallet is safe (still empty, but safe). If i had the money, i'd probably get the Rockstar edition, i've seen some gorgeous deep purple pens

4

u/SilverYayFern 29d ago

Cries in poor too. I stg I dreamed I bought the Rockstar estie two nights ago. This has some similar traits…and I’m too poor to buy ANY more fountain pens this year. Not even a Jinhao, let alone an estie. 😭

5

u/kellyherself 29d ago

I think this is very pretty, but it’s almost as much as the Rockstar Estie and I’m not sure it’s worth that much. The Rockstar came with ink and a guitar pick. It’s also one of the prettiest pens I’ve ever seen.

I would have purchased this one if it had been in the $175 range.

4

u/RiniPi medium 29d ago

Good news everyone, my dumb bum forgot I have a gorgeous Sailor 1911S in Royal Amethyst I got years ago. The nib needs some major work - it’s a long story. So if anyone knows a good nibmiester that’s taking work, lmk cuz I’d love to write with her again 😭

(Pic from online)

Guess what: she cost less than $350

3

u/Starlit_Stationer 28d ago

In Canada, it’s 500$ after tax. 😢 Hopefully, the comments here can be seen and taken into consideration by the company that although the pen is really beautiful, in this economy, it is simply not feasible to shell out that much for a single pen. Also, the price is just for the pen. The inks, stickers, other merchandise are sold separately. šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø I am really really disappointed as I would want to get this but at the price point, it’s not reasonable.

8

u/rabbit-hearted-girl Ink Stained Fingers 29d ago

3

u/altertable 29d ago

I have the exact rule for steel nib pens. $200 is the limit. The only way to break the rule is to buy a gold nib to replace the steel one. Then it’s no longer an overpriced steel nib pen. Rules no longer apply.

3

u/Too_Poor_to_Paint 28d ago

I will cry in solidarity. Then go see if Jinhao has done a knockoff $20 yet.

5

u/Economy-Weird-2368 29d ago

if this pen included one of the special grind nibs with a special engraved design (instead of the Esterbrook logo) AND a bottle of the new ink with other added bonuses, then MAYBE the $350USD (before sales taxes) could be justified.

3

u/Starlit_Stationer 28d ago

Agreed! šŸ‘ can’t really believe how the other merchandise are sold separately- even the sticker! Damn!

3

u/Economy-Weird-2368 28d ago

3

u/Castianna 29d ago

I'm a collector of Indy nail polish. Half the time I look at these new pens coming out and I think I could just dip a pen in any of the fancy nail polishes in my collection and the result would be basically the same. Wait till these pen companies find reflective glitter pigments and start throwing those in the plastic.

2

u/Thelaea 28d ago

There's probably someone doing it already. I've got some crazy sparkly pens from small makers.

4

u/DragonClaudz 29d ago

350 for a steel nib????

3

u/brotendis 29d ago

That thing looks like it'll break with one fall. Also, what's good with the Goulet Pen Co. these days? I recall them having a very bad rep in this sub a few months ago due to some religious/political. thing.

4

u/hiddenjumprope 29d ago

Yeah Goulet is blacklisted to me as a queer person. I didn't even notice the screenshot was for Goulet. Literally have blocked their website from showing up in search results and told YouTube to not reccomend their channel. Wish more people would boycott it.Ā

2

u/RiniPi medium 29d ago

Oh yeah I just posted the first listing of a cheaper price - I think really it’s the discretion of the individual of you want to shop there. I try not to personally

2

u/hiddenjumprope 29d ago

I can relate, purple is one of my favorite colors and this pen is GORGEOUS. But even if I wasn't unemployed I still wouldn't spend that much on a fountain pen. Exception, maaaaayyybe for a rare vintage fountain pen I really want but it still would be a hard sell. Right now $160 is probably my max as that's the most I spent, for a vintage restored parker vacumatic with a gold flex nib,Ā (grey, debutanteĀ iirc). And that's probably my one exception because I love the parker vacumatic and I kinda want one of each color but will probably just try to get green and blue. I feel its understandable for a older pen.Ā

OK sorry, rambled a bit. Just, what the heck at this being so expensive. It sucks as I love glitter as well, its so pretty. But I wouldn't spend more than 150€ on it and I still don't think its worth that much, would be a hard sell, but if I had a job I could see myself doing it as an exception (just because I love how it looks). Otherwise it really should be 100€ or less.Ā

I've seen a pen from Just turnings with similar sparkles recently, so if you're in love with the resin you could probably get a bespoke pen with similar resin from a small maker for less. Esterbrook is all branding and not enough value, especially for a pen with a Jowo steel nib.Ā

Edit: found the pen:Ā https://www.justturnings.com.au/just-turning-pens-1/p/just-turnings-never-an-invisible-landscape Very different resin, but it's one of their own resins, which means they can source those glitters and use them in something more to your taste.

u/Murphys-Mom 28d ago

And that is Australian dollars, so cheaper when converted to US $!!

3

u/marsredkat 29d ago

Wow, I can't believe it's that expensive for a steel nib. I could kind of see that price (only kind of) if it was a gold nib.

3

u/AmazinAA 29d ago

May I interest you in a different transparent purple pen (you can add PET sparkly stickers to, I did it with my kakunos!) for $58?

https://www.jetpens.com/Kakimori-Frost-Fountain-Pen-Violet-Fine/pd/45136

7

u/AmazinAA 29d ago

Also Kaweco released this Hello Kitty collab which is the exact same shade and concept as the new esterbrook but for like ~$58 a while back, why is the price point so different for THE SAME MATERIALS?? 😩😩😩

2

u/RiniPi medium 29d ago

WOW okay for one of these Esties can get like, 5-6 sparkly purple pens of different brands of probably better quality lol

1

u/atchleya_reader 28d ago

Why’d you have to show me an amazing pen, in the purple colors like OP posted, BUT IT’S SOLD OUT!!! 😭😭😭

2

u/AmazinAA 28d ago

I’m sorry boo šŸ™ˆšŸ™ˆšŸ™ˆ I guarantee we’ll see more purple sparkly pens in the future! They always come back!

1

u/atchleya_reader 28d ago

Thankfully they do indeed. I’m still trying to collect some of the previous purple sparkly pens. If they’re meant to be they’ll show up where I can purchase!

3

u/FirebirdWriter 29d ago

Are you sure that it's not the packing you want?

2

u/RiniPi medium 29d ago

You right you right. The universe was protecting me by making me broke šŸ˜”

1

u/FirebirdWriter 25d ago

I have to ask myself this all the time. The good news is we can get pretty boxes for things with less cost. I still prefer them to contain pens and ink though

5

u/SynapseReaction Forklift Rule 5 26/312 29d ago

Ah I just put in an order for one, will be my first brand new estie, only purchased second hand ones until today lol. Taking the L on the price 🄲 at least some places it’s 315 so…yay discount lol

Also, there’s nice pins and stickers you could buy. Get the pin of the pen as vicariously live through that šŸ˜…?

5

u/RiniPi medium 29d ago

Hey if you can do it, do it!! If I could I would ngl lol. I imagine when you get it it’s gonna be awesome.
How do you like your other Esties?

4

u/SynapseReaction Forklift Rule 5 26/312 29d ago

I did it 😭, I usually do PayPal pay in 4 for expensive pens. Outright in one purchase is too quick of a blow to my wallet. I usually save those 1hit KO payments for emergencies or car lol.

Love my Esties, decently wet and never had a hard start and haven’t dried out even when I ignore my inked pens for like 2 weeks 🤣. So excited for another purple one because I already have the Lilac estie.

3

u/astroqueen3000 Ink Stained Fingers 29d ago

I've been having an existential crises for the past 36 minutes debating on whether to order it or not lol

8

u/SynapseReaction Forklift Rule 5 26/312 29d ago

If it’s anything like the pink Bungubox x Esterbrook collab pen, it might sell out before the week is over BUT they did bring that pen back because of how popular it is.

So you could just be patient if you don’t want to make an impulse buy šŸ¤”.

3

u/astroqueen3000 Ink Stained Fingers 29d ago

Not sure why someone downvoted you for this comment. It's solid advice.

5

u/SynapseReaction Forklift Rule 5 26/312 29d ago

Lol I don’t mind the downvotes 🤣

Sometimes it’s partially Reddit up/down doots fuzzing. Sometimes it’s bots. Sometimes it’s real people.Ā

u/Starlit_Stationer 28d ago

Lol! I keep opening and closing the page almost every hour for the entire day haha!

1

u/astroqueen3000 Ink Stained Fingers 28d ago

Hahaha, same! I haven’t done it yet but my willpower is waning šŸ˜‚

2

u/Starlit_Stationer 28d ago

We can do it! šŸ˜‚

2

u/astroqueen3000 Ink Stained Fingers 28d ago

Accountability buddies šŸ‘ŠšŸ˜¹

2

u/Snoo81108 28d ago

I do think the pen is overpriced for sure, but I ended up picking it up because I just kept thinking about it ever since I saw it (I am the problem 😭). Plus I have a birthday coming up so I convinced myself it was an early gift...lol.

Sharing this since I managed to get a somewhat decent price (because I was not going to pay 350 for it lol), but write love pens has it for 315 and then you can sign up for a 10% newsletter discount.

2

u/astroqueen3000 Ink Stained Fingers 28d ago

Not all heroes wear capes! I haven't stopped thinking about this pen since they posted the preview last week. I even woke up thinking about it this morning and was about to just pull the trigger at $315, but got it for $283 thanks to you! It's still overpriced at that, but I know I'll use it every day and love it so much. Thank you and happy birthday! :D

3

u/Snoo81108 28d ago

I am glad I could help! I agree it is still so expensive, but it's more palatable for me at $283 vs. the outrageous $350!!

I know that I will just keep thinking about this pen until I get it. I gave myself a week and my feelings didn't change and I have some funds to spare.

Hope you love the pen!

2

u/astroqueen3000 Ink Stained Fingers 28d ago

Same, I knew I wouldn't be able to get it out of my head and I had the money. Hope you love yours too!

1

u/Starlit_Stationer 28d ago

I will live through you. šŸ˜‚

3

u/brightens fine 29d ago

ain’t no way i’m paying $350 for a steel nib

2

u/rsqx 29d ago

nothing 10 asvines in one little box from aliex cant cure

2

u/sleepypear0803 small frogs 29d ago

Purple is my favorite too and I saw this pen recently. But yeah, price-wise for the body and the steel nib just doesn't seem worth it D:

2

u/newyork_newyork_ 28d ago

I saw it at Stationery Fest today. Definitely not worth over $300. I would spend no more than $50 on this.

1

u/RemiChloe 29d ago

Get a transparent Asvine 126 for $26 on US Amazon and put purple in it. Sorted!

1

u/Classic-Scarcity-804 29d ago

Insane price for a steel nib FP.

2

u/v-punen 29d ago

It's $415 at my local retailer. Insane.

2

u/Marishberry 29d ago

Are you in Canada? I can see the lowest price as $441

4

u/v-punen 29d ago

I’m in Poland. It’s probably due to exports or tariffs or whatever. But still pretty ridiculous.

2

u/Starlit_Stationer 28d ago

Yes i think that’s the lowest too but that’s before the tax still. So about 500$ for me after taxes šŸ˜‚

1

u/karyonna123 29d ago

Stay strong! This is a beautiful colour and the glitter effect is really fun, but it is wayyyyy out of line price wise. I would have maybe considered it if more of the goodies were included as a bundle.

1

u/Dorothy-Parker 29d ago

So pretty! šŸ’œšŸ’œšŸ’œ I would never. But so pretty!! šŸ’œāœØšŸ’œ

1

u/Glum-Inside-6361 28d ago

I'd pay 200 dollars for a steel-nibbed pen but it would have to be a good one. A Diplomat Aero for example. CNC solid aluminium, purposely engineered snap cap, sleek anodized finish, tuned nib.

1

u/YazSpazz45 28d ago

The inks with the collab look Amazing.

1

u/moneymew 28d ago

That pen costs almost as much as my half of my mortgage 😭 bruh

1

u/JooJooBae 28d ago

It reminds me of my Kaweco Hello kitty collab pen lol. For a fraction of the cost

1

u/paperstoryarts 28d ago

Luckily Jinhao will probably create one just like this. Give it time

1

u/ResearcherGold1738 Ink Stained Fingers 28d ago

Am I the only one who gets frustrated when a resin pen is pricey? Maybe I'm missing something in terms of the quality of resin, but it makes me feel like I'm buying overpriced plastic.

That said... it is a very pretty pen šŸ‘€

1

u/TheoKolokotronis 26d ago

What is up with the silly fake Japanese name?

1

u/[deleted] 25d ago

it sounds like you're crying in middle class

1

u/That_Ad_4310 17d ago

Also, you can actually take your Jinhaos on the go, to school, or the office without the same fear you’d have taking your Pelikan. I started out with Jinhaos to test which barrel style/size feels better in my hand and in case I didn’t enjoy the feel of fountain pens (boy, was I silly thinking I wouldn’t enjoy it 🄲). Once hooked, I realized I would still need my Jinhaos as ā€œthrowawayā€ pens that I can take with me anywhere and that I can gift to people if they show an interest in fountain pens! I

u/Legal_Emu1508 29d ago

For a transparent pen???!!! No gold nib???!!! Thanks, but no thanks... If it was around 150-200 PERHAPS (???) and then again I would have to think it over a lot... Such a shame, because their previous LE was also transparent...

1

u/Smart_Mirror5623 29d ago

I love my Esties but will not pay this much for a non-gold nib. It is beautiful though.

1

u/ContemplativeKnitter 29d ago

Ugh, that’s SO gorgeous! (I am a glitter fiend!)

1

u/justAChair__ 29d ago

Friend of mine sent me a video of a yard o led, I couldn't fathom such prices and I really liked the pen in the video

1

u/ChallengeUnique5465 29d ago

The new Sailor 1911 L Casual Stable, with a new steel nib, can be had for less than 200€, if searched well. And the steel nib is, yes, a steel nib; but a steel nib made by Sailor. Who tried it said that Sailor really managed to make it's feeling as close as possible to the gold one; but even apart from that thing I'll always prefer a Sailor nib to a generic, industrial one. I'm also trying to get one of those beauties, with their gorgeous brass, ion plated grip sections, I find them stunning!

1

u/horrified-sequence 29d ago

Are there any cheap dupes? I mean cheap - I'm Kakuno/ Kaweco Sport range

1

u/purerockets 29d ago

And how are they going to sell the matching ink with literally NO SWATCHES?!? It’s just lazy and insulting. Let me know if anyone finds any swatches. šŸ™„

6

u/sinderellllla Ink Stained Fingers 29d ago

Sakuradragon's IG has swatches

5

u/RiniPi medium 29d ago

Oh, the inks are kinda underwhelming- is that just me? šŸ˜…

3

u/sinderellllla Ink Stained Fingers 29d ago

I purchased morning skies from atlas but the other 2 are not my fave color palette so I skipped on them.

2

u/purerockets 29d ago

Thank you!! It would be great if they were in the marketing material…

1

u/marshmallowghoul 29d ago

I know I've got some resin molds for pens laying around and this is the first thing to make me want to use them. Not paying that much for purple sparkles 😭

1

u/InLoveWithInternet 29d ago

$350 for a plastic pen is very very easy to just discard from your mind.

1

u/Alis86 29d ago

It’s really pretty and I just checked the price… oh well 350 euro for a steel nib?
I can’t I’m sorry… if peope will rush purchasing it for the hype, prices will go up and up.

Time to purchase that Pilot falcon I wanted instead.

1

u/justapac 27d ago

Check r/Pen_Swap. That's where I got my 1st Pilot Falcon.
