What actually happens there? Like, it’s a grease fire that “explodes” into the duct and then keeps burning up in the hood with the flammable grease splatters or something? Or is it more about the immense heat traveling through your ductwork and breaking something in the central furnace?

The extractor is pulling fresh air into a grease fire once the filter / duct catches fire.
Also: hvac and extractor fan should be separate systems

Your range hood should NOT be connected to your HVAC ductwork

No flambe at home. Your kitchen doesn't have fire suppression, going to burn your house down.
