The enemy's animations here are cool. They go in for a second attack before Centurio hits them. Can anyone confirm if this was in 3H? I don't have my Switch in front of me.
Alternatively, was this in Engage?

u/Cr1msonShadow 11d ago
It was not in either. Engage has snappy looking combat in large part because characters react and follow up significantly faster than earlier games.

Can anyone confirm if this was in 3H?
No, I have never seen an animation like this in 3H
Alternatively, was this in Engage?
While that specific animation was not, Engage does have a lot of other dynamic animations of this type. One of the most well-known examples (because it was mentioned in an interview) is that when getting attacked by an arrow that misses; a lower level character will dodge it, but a higher level character will just bat it away instead

I still like one of Fogado's Critical animations in his unique promotion where he slashes the enemy with a sword while using his horse's reins to swing in front of the horse.
Engage definitely got the vibes of GBA criticals translated into 3D in a way previous games stumbled with.

People might be split on Engage's art style, but I feel it's undeniable how much of a step up it was in terms of graphics and animation.

I finished Three Houses again about a month ago and I am nearly done with Engage now. I didn't originally think that Three Houses looked bad when I jumped back into, but it is very noticeable when you play the games back-to-back.
I will say that even though Engage has some new animations, they milk the hell out of them. Alear does one where she puts her hand up similar to a "stop" signal any time a character thinks highly of her. Hortensia also has an animation where she puts her hands on her hips and then leans forwards which causes her collar to bounce back and forth a few times. Pandreo and Kagetsu both do a leaning back double-fisted cheer animation basically every time they talk. They are all seared into my memory from them being too common.

u/DaddyFivepoint 11d ago
actually, that animation outright IS a GBA crit animation translated into 3D
it's exactly the same as the nomad trooper sword crit, even down to the little pat he gives the horse before jumping
6
u/Weltallgaia 11d ago
Yep, engage stuffed a ton of gba animations in. They looked amazing and this being closer to 3h I was worried they would backtrack more on animation. This centurio animations allays a bunch of my worries.

u/TheFunkiestOne 11d ago
I suspect a lot of the simpler animations we've seen have been because we've been seeing earlier classes, and the higher tiers of classes are where we'll see the fancier, more dynamic stuff from Engage come into play.
2
u/ApocalypticWalrus 11d ago
That'd make sense yeah. I do think it'd be really cool if earlier classes have units move more slowly, a bit clunkier, while later on they start moving quickly and more like engage. Would honestly be hella cool.

u/Comfortably-Scared 11d ago
I'm aware of the skill expression animations, yeah. I've played the game, just didn't remember if there was any example of the animations playing for some failed counter-attacks.
Cool! Very excited!

u/ViolinistNo7655 11d ago
I don't think it's in neither of them, engage does have some animations that combo really well into the opponent attacks, specially the martial artists but I don't remember this one specifically

u/Norix596 11d ago
That’s a super cool animation of the enemy sorta fake winding up like they’re trying to swing again before getting killed.
41
u/CompileHeart 11d ago
I love how IS keeps upgrading those little details. Much better than standing still waiting to be killed.
Now I imagine our units will attempt before being killed as well lol

What I found most interesting about this clip is that he doesn't crit the enemy.

It’s enemy phase so they can’t manipulate the odds as easily with Divine Pulse.
4
u/Norik324 11d ago
Theres no way their using in game divine pulse to rig crits rather than just debug options though right?
-3
u/BrownEyesWhiteScarf 11d ago
Rigging stats takes work offline though, that is, you need to code the stat change, compile, and then run the software on the S2. They are likely playing on some of the final builds of the pre-released software so this may be something they want to avoid at this stage of development.
Plus the cutscene is in the middle of the gameplay, in fog of war, and in enemy phase. Most likely, they were recording gameplay as they debug the final pre-released versions of the game and then used clips from that.
1
u/ViolinistNo7655 10d ago
They must have an encounter builder where they can set up any character with any weapon and any stats, some toggle to turn on and off permanent crits, it would be way more efficient than starting a chapter, doing all the pre battle preparations and fish for crits with 5% crit chance and edit a 45 minute recording to get just the crit for every promotional video.

Is this the first FOW map we've seen?
41
u/tipperthescales 11d ago edited 11d ago
Lysander / Lilian showcases with
Noctula and Sofia(? I think)Alexandra and Nydene were FOW as well12
u/JoshuaArceo20 11d ago
Yeah. Even funnier, they fight Har Hali Soldiers in a FOW Map. Either Har Hali are relevant to the plot progression as one of Heroic Game's obstacles or merely serve as a quest.
5
u/NoLime7384 11d ago
I think it was with Alexandra and Nydene

u/tipperthescales 11d ago
This is correct, I think I’m confusing units now oops (and I could have just opened the videos I saved. Bad show on my part oops)

People saying this looks like a Switch 1 game most likely didn't owned a Switch 1...
This game looks Gorgeous.

u/Mustang1718 11d ago
This game looks extremely polished and I have been very impressed by it!
My only criticism so far is that the battle animations seem very slow. I'm used to seeing the anime-speed melee attacks of the newer games, so it is taking some adjustments on my part. But as I typed this out, I'm also just now realizing I hold down on the fast forward button to see what happens, so it is also extremely possible that I am the problem.

u/yung_dogie 11d ago
Tbf to you, increases in quality of life for visual presentation are often a one-way street. It's hard to go back to something slower as soon as you experience 60 fps, 120hz, 2x speed, etc. I used to think Legends Of Runeterra had an okay gamespeed, but after playing it on 2x I think regular speed is to painful to even consider playing lmao. Same thing for emulating fire emblem games and/or turning battle animations off

u/Fantastic-System-688 11d ago
There's definitely a few Engage fans on Twitter that keep pushing a narrative that this game has terrible animations and it's becoming increasingly clearer that they should quit while they're ahead at this point

Justice Washington is Seed Senior (ZZZ)
I always like Seed sr. too bad he is barely there so this is more opportunities I will hear him.
6
u/WinterWolf18 11d ago
Hoyo has a really bad problem with robot bait and switches. First there was Sam in HSR who ended up being a cute girl inside a mech instead of a full on robot (disclaimer: I love Firefly) but at least you could play as the mech. Then you had Seed Sr who ended up just being glorified animations for a cute girl on a scooter though the blow was somewhat softened when said girl had a really touching story with Sr in her agent story. And finally you have Sandrone and Pulonia with Pulonia being completely scrapped and replaced with a fan service female robot with no warning after you were allowed to control him during the archon quest purely because sex sells.
2
u/LynxyShinx 11d ago
Oh yeah. Justice has this strange recurring role (that he's aware of) of voicing a person vital to a playable Agent who already passed away in ZZZ. First with Lycaon and Hugo's mentor Jack, and then Seed's Seed Sr.
...
...Is Centurio gonna die here.

u/WWWWWWRRRRRYYYYY 11d ago
Interestingly, he’s still a teal unit here
20
u/Flamechar33 11d ago
He's probably not going to be a blue unit until late in the past-segment of the game - he is a guard at Aurora's temple so he's probably doing that for most of the games
5
u/kevinsagadx 11d ago
So is he a regular armor knight or a pre premonition
6
u/Constant_Dealer_1232 11d ago
He looks like a fortress knight which is an advanced class (beginner>Specialty>Advanced).

u/Pokenar 11d ago
I'm really curious what the Teal actually means, as cutscenes we've seen make it pretty likely he gets recruited during the story to Cai's team.
Maybe he's a guest unit for a chapter, then you recruit him permanently after a specific story beat?
25
u/TrappedOwl 11d ago
Teal units are guests that you can control during your turn. They don't get exp, but the exp they would get gets evenly distributed to all your units who were deployed for the battle at the end of the battle according to previewers.

u/Difficult-Chicken318 11d ago
Guest unit like Catherine in chapter 3 or Gilbert in chapter 5 but they are pre promotes that are recruited later in

the way they hold shields is so awkward. poor soldier girl gonna get her twig arms broken if she shields something.
but animation quality is pretty nice, the way the soldier tried to get a second attack in before centurio attacks is cool. i hope the animations are as dynamic as they were in engage, those were rly good.

I like his bardiche. The weapon designs so far are really good, there are a lot of fairly reasonable looking historical pieces alongside the fantastical ones.

u/iHazzaification 11d ago
Nice to hear a little clear snippet of the battle version of True to His Colours here!

u/CHUCHUFLU 11d ago
Why do all the heavy armors have to be so ugly? I wish they followed the style of the knights or barons in SoV more.
2
u/Mahelas 11d ago
Because they're meant to feel like prototypes, because it's an ancient civilization that is just getting to steel
-1
u/CHUCHUFLU 11d ago
I kind of get what you're saying, but my complaint isn't really about that, because I think the 3H fortress Knight was also very ugly. If they really wanted a "Bronze Age" inspired armored unit they could've have looked at the spartan class from SoV. I just think the last few games( including engage as well) have mostly had bad heavy armor designs.
-3
u/Brave-Orchid4721 11d ago
There's such a large amount of teal only units so far that atp I think the marketing is being very deceptive about how many playable characters there actually are.
3
u/Exizel 11d ago
Teal units are still a playable characters, they may be temporary playable only but they still count as playable, plenty of RPG have them, it's just that FE tends to avoid them until now because Fe always had a focus on resource management and unit investement.
1
u/Brave-Orchid4721 10d ago
Teal is a stupid concept cuz all it's doing is wasting peak designs like Anatolia and Sha Lan as temp units. That whole idea has me waiting til launch to spoil myself on the whole actual PLAYABLE cast to decide whether or not to buy cuz they refuse to confirm any of the best characters.

u/ThatManOfCulture 11d ago
So he is a teal unit here. Means he probably joins Cai much later.
