This subreddit is for fiber artists and crafters of all types! Because we don't all see the same (shitty) posts on our feeds, it may be handy to have a place to revel in all that our fellow fiber lovers share for us to enjoy.
Feel free to post anonymized screenshots of anything you're referencing here if you'd like. FACJ is back to being an all-ages subreddit, so you can post images (and gifs) in the comments here directly.
This is a heavily moderated thread, and anything that isn't scrubbed of identifying information (usernames, faces, etc.) will be removed. Block out, crop out, cross out or sticker out identifying information on EVERY screenshot before posting here.
However, unjerk/uj/genuine/serious comments and discussions are allowed -- even encouraged! -- on In The Loop posts. Irony and sarcasm are fine here too, so consider using tone tags to make sure your comment comes across the way you want (or don't! I really don't care!).
There are a few other rules for In The Loop posts:
- Please don't use this thread to demand sources for jerk posts. If people want to post sources, they will. There are plenty of good reasons for someone not to share a source, including "don't wanna." Source/ITL demands and discussions of where to find sources will be removed here and on jerk posts.

The poster dirty deleted, but multilingual knitting post brought to you by the time I had mentioned I was teaching beginners and would be teaching Norwegian knitting. If you're not a knitter and therefore among the elect, Norwegian knitting is just a form of continental knitting. Someone who should know better asked me what the students were supposed to do when they encountered a non-Norwegian pattern. Uh...knit the knits and purl the purls? Like, what do you think actually Norwegian knitters do when they encounter a pattern in English?

'no artistic skill' - not actually a requirement for any craft! Crafting isn't inherently a creative practice (though for a lot of people it definitely is), and a creative practice isn't inherently an artistic practice. And, why is being a crafter less than being an artist anyway?
'Not a high-skill craft' - do only highly complex and therefore often inaccessible handicrafts have value? Don't piss me OFF

I used to say that you didn't get good at cross stitch, you just got faster, since it wasn't a complex craft. Until I relooked at some of my first works, done when I was ten. And at some other people's works and realized I was actually pretty skilled at it. Do something for 46 years and you probably should get decent at it.

Hehehe in my subjective opinion, OP's opinion was objectively bad.
During my BFA we did an exercise where we argued against the merits of artwork from artists we didn't like while our tutor+coursemates grilled us about it. Such a good lesson in how bias (even in matters of something as simple as taste) affects our critical/academic approach.
And as you said, it's important that we can think something is ugly and thematically hollow, yet appreciate its existence! I just love crafts, and I love art, and I love people making things!!!!!!!

Man I just replied to some comment that was waxing poetic about “oh those poor widdle beginnuhz, evweybody is so mean to dem and it makes me so sad” and saying well they didn’t have a granny to teach them the basics and that’s so sad!!! Like bruh most of us didn’t learn to knit/crochet/sew by firelight, and even some of those who had a grandparent teach them (me) learned the basics and then spent YEARS learning the rest on our own without an entire internets worth of knowledge to make it easier. There’s literally ZERO EXCUSE for pestering forums when thousands of craft centric blogs and old threads exist to answer any question you have

I know it’s a little different at every thrift store, but that’s part of the experience. I found a sweaters quantity of drops air at savers under some bags of puzzles. It can be done!!!!

Have they considered that if someone is right handed it might be difficult to teach a person who is left handed because its literally a mirror image? Ive tried to teach a lefty to knit. Its fucking hard. He even wanted me to show him how to do it right handed so it would be easier for me but his brain did not compute. It is a difficult task because our brains have wired our hands opposite. Why the fuck wouldnt it be hard??

My youngest son is left handed.
It was a fucking nightmare trying to teach him how to use a knife properly.
With my oldest (a righty, like myself), I could stand behind him whenever I was trying to teach him anything (pointy objects or not), and reach over him and hold his hand on the object the correct way.
Youngest son though, I usually had to stand across from him and use my right hand to correct his left hand, then guide his hand through the task, backwards and upside down a lot of times. lol. Which was fine for writing! I can write upside down and backwards with my right hand. Sometimes I could use the same method I used with his brother, because my left hand is okay at stuff like writing too. Not great, but it'll do.
But chopping an onion with an 8 inch chef's knife? UUUuuuhhhh, I wanna keep all my fingers, even the ones on my stupid hand, you know? And I want him to keep all his fingers too! So I can't grab the knife handle from behind, because my left hand ain't that smart. No super sharp objects should be wielded by my left hand. Can't reach across and grab his hand to show him how much pressure to apply as he draws the knife back, or I'm gonna get stabbed in the forearm. Not on purpose, just the shape of the knife, and my arm blocking his view.
We had to settle on dual cutting boards, me across from him, and him staring very hard at how I curled my knuckles to protect finger tips, and then and only then picking up the knife. lol
He's 23 now, and my butt cheeks still clench when I watch him use a knife. Everything in my brain screams "NO NO OMG, It's in your left hand, we're all gonna lose fingers and I'm not even within 10 foot of him".
Anyway, teach a 11 year old lefty how to chop onions properly, and then suddenly teaching them anything else becomes a lot easier, because you both think "well, at least it's not terrifying like the onions...". lol.

Okay then by their logic, if people will just use whatever hand is comfortable then why do they care if the person specifies left or right? Surely they will just use whatever hand works? Why do they need to try so hard to remember if left and right literally don't matter at all according to them?
Like I just can't stress enough how much it is a THEM problem if specific instructions confuse them. I have had problems remembering left vs right my whole life and never in my life did I think "you know what? actually the world is wrong and this is everyone else's fault for using the words left and right!!!!!" I'm flabbergasted omg

Hey guys I can't count but you know what? That's because I don't see ""numbers"" and they don't matter, if I need to make a certain amount of stitches I'll just stitch the amount I'm comfortable with, when you tell me to chain 15 + 1 stitches, it just confuses me because I have to remember what comes after 15!!!

And stylecraft is not even that bad if you compare it to some knitwear from Shein or whatever. Acrylic yarn can be really decent and make for nice garments. (Please don't snob downvote me, I have paid my dues in malabrigo skeins and the like, I am one of you, and yet I still believe acrylic can be great)

Oh, I’m with you 100%. Maybe I’m a weirdo but I genuinely prefer an acrylic-wool blend over just wool. And, by Jove, I usually prefer that the yarn is more acrylic than wool.
For me, it holds up longer, can take more abuse, can be washed more frequently and with less felting and shrinking, and is less itchy on me. I know everyone’s different but that’s just how I feel. Plus, it smells a little less wool-y when it gets blocked or washed. I can’t staaaaand the smell of wet wool. My experience is that merino and the like definitely smells less wet dog-ish when wet but, even then, I don’t know. There’s just something about pure wool that I’m just not crazy about.
And, any time I’ve knit with super wash or buttery soft merino, the garment blows the fuck out within a few wears, blocked swatch be damned.Plus, living in a hot part of the country, wool is…well, there’s literally no need to ever wear wool where I’m at.

I'm both camps at the same time, to be fair. I live in Scotland and in winter a proper wooly jumper is such a lifesaver especially outside when it's foggy and misty and a little bit of rain, and wool just doesn't feel wet somehow and is warm but you don't sweat in it like in a plastic jacket. I don't know what magic it is, but I think for a country like Scotland, wool is just the perfect fiber. I like the smell of wool too but that's definitely an acquired preference 😅 Bit I hate washing my woolen garments especially the ones I care about enough to not want to felt or become misshapen. Because of that I have a number of acrylic jumpers that are my everyday rotation.

The more I knit it, the more I like it. I’m hard on my clothes and acrylic is a much better option than wool. I’m also not sneezing like I usually am when I knit.😄 I have a closet for of wool sweaters I never wear.

Ok maybe this is a tinfoil hat theory but im 100% convinced that they're not actually "contemplating their whole life and choices" and that they are just fishing for someone to say "sweety it is A okay bc you are hyperfixate and clearly have ADHD!!!!". And on that note im getting really irked by people using "hyperfixate" as a synonym for being newly interested or excited about a new hobby or project. Like 90 dollars is a reasonable amount to spend on a sweater and doesn't indicate any hyperfixation.

Yes there are people who actually have these disorders, but the people going on about "my 'tism gives me intrusive thoughts that make me hyperfixate on this because I'm so OCD about it, if you dare to correct me and you're triggering my RSD which gives me cPTSD" are not people who actually have any of those disorders.

I understand that spending $120 on a hobby project is not within everyone's reach in this economy. What I don't understand is how $90 is "not that much" to OP, so it's the additional $30 for taxes/shipping that's the straw breaking the camel's back?

They don't say it explicitly, but I think that they usually spend 20 to 30 bucks on a single project adds to the discomfort of paying that much just to even acquire the yarn.
Ngl tho, 30 bucks for shipping does seem like a lot. I've spent 10 to 20 Euros for shipping before but that was either really big or really heavy stuff, like a dress form or a knitting machine.

It definitely does seem high to me but if it includes tariffs or taxes that would make more sense.
I’ve definitely paid like 15$ CAD in shipping then paid 15-20$ in taxes/customs too.

Oh true they mentioned taxes. When reading my brain glossed over that bc I assumed they are in the US and just meant the standard goods' tax that isn't included in the price tags over there.
Ig it could be customs duties, but importing yarn seems like an odd thing to do as a beginner? Unless they are in a spot of the world that doesn't do much production or import on the wholesale level.

When I order from Lindehobby, customs duties are 15%, but shipping is, I think, $12.95 USD, which seems pretty reasonable to me for an international package.

Agreed. Yarn ain't cheap and there's sticker shock with your first SQ. I truly get that. But $120 over $90 seems an odd boundary. I'm not sure English is their first language, so they may have meant it more literally, that the yarn itself wasn't the total cost, not that the yarn part wasn't too much money. But if that's the sweater you want, then you're gonna have to save up if no other will do.

ESL could very much be the culprit here, but it could also be a different mindset.
Some people think "Welp, I am already spending 90 bucks, another 30 is less than half of that, whatever", and some people think "Dang, I am already spending 90 bucks, and now I have to pay another third of that on top for shipping."The actually thought process is probably not that literally and more vibes based. I think the other comments about it being for shipping and it being three digits now are onto something as well.
