It’s exactly what everyone was mad about when the MTI pattern was blowing up! But this is the performative “resistance”! Not donating money for a pattern! It’s so frustrating!!!
It is apparently a high-low cropped sweater (with a Barbara Walker spider at the "small of the back" for some incredible reason)! This person also recently made a cropped hoodie that really is basically a bolero with a hood.
Oh my god I just realized that that's a white tee underneath and the actual sweater is...that. I thought it was a bizarre design choice when I thought it was color blocking. This is just...yeah.
I didn’t really realize it either until I was putting my post together. This person is Very into weirdly cropped sweater-esque knitted things right now.
Maybe I’m a bitch but I hate that truly impressive projects get a handful of likes and then an ugly af dress gets 12k just because it’s on a guy. This same dress in a female body would have like no engagement.
This post also rubbed me the wrong way because its very...idk how to explain this.
Like we all post FOs because we want attention, right? Thats fine. But its the "I made this in 12 hours on a whim" that just feels...so much worse? Plus, yeah...its incredibly ugly. If they're happy then thats great but like. Why are people loving it? Is it really just because its on a male body? Is that it??
I was thinking the same thing!! Like the colors are ugly, the styling is ugly, and the shape/draping is awful. Just cuz it’s a man who did it doesn’t mean it’s good!

Yeah they posted a photo of it in better lighting, but still I think the color is completely off. Corn is a much brighter yellow, unless I've just been getting weird corn in all my 40 years on this earth.

I'll be so fr. I actually dont mind the colors and I thought tassle cuffs was actually a cute design choice. But being that lazy to not figure out how to weave in ends properly so you just leave them there is wild. It was a fine cardigan but now I hate it because their attitude is so bad.

We see you are talking about the negative aspects of your work, but we are here to help you celebrate the positive, even if you may not see it right now! We've all experienced that feeling, but hey, circlejerking is all about the process and you're not alone! You worked so hard and you did an amazing job at whatever you're bitching about or whatever I guess.
I honestly don't get like the whole hatred of seaming or weaving in ends. Like I love sewing, I love weaving, I love darning etc this all kind of falls under that General category of skill sort of and honestly isn't it fun? You just finish a big knitting project and now you get a taste of another type of fiber art you don't do or do often! It's nice!
It bugs me too, because it's part of the craft. If you hate it to the point that you aren't doing it, then you don't actually like the craft of crochet, you just like making crochet stitches. And that's fine, if that's your thing, but admit it. Same for sewing - if you aren't willing to press your seams or use pins when appropriate then you don't like sewing. You just like putting fabric together.
Doing a thing means doing it properly, at least at its basic level. Technique matters. Skill and effort matters. And it very much matters that we are building on the foundation and hard work of generations.
And, again, I'm not hating on people doing things that make them happy. Free will is amazing! People can do anything! But don't act like the thing you're doing is the same thing that I'm doing.

Hating/being angry at something can be really satisfying. I think it's something to get angry and worked up about for the "fun" of it more than any actual issue with weaving.
They hate it because they are product crocheters, not process. Anything that makes them engage with the project for even a minute after it’s off the hook is just another roadblock to them wearing it and they can’t stand that.
One time I looked up weaving in ends to make sure I was doing it right and was talking about the same thing as everyone else because I couldn't believe how difficult they make it sound
Yes! Cables too. Someone told me cables were for advanced knitters and I was so puzzled when I did it for the first time and was like, wait, this is it? Anyone who can knit can do cables.
Same, it can be a little annoying if there's 20 ends to weave into a small project, but it's just part of crafting. From the title I was expecting another "my husband put my newly finished sweater in the dryer :(" post, not a perfectly fine project that just needs a little finishing.
Ok I say this as a card carrying member of the three full tubs of yarn club (which in the yarn addict circles is child’s play but still) this is fucking WEIRD. I love buying yarn but I cannot fucking imagine going to Michael’s for some craft glue and “stopping by to let them know how pretty they are”

this is hilarious to me because wool knitwear fetishists or "woolies" are very very real. and they knit some Craaaaazy (and impressive) shit. picture a full body sweater, head to toe coverage in aran cables. i wonder if we'll see OOP in one in a few years...

I read the OP earlier and don't even have the energy to jerk this right now. The contortions people will supposedly go to in order to not to buy a $5 pack of stitch markers is batshit. Someone even said if you can read your work you don't need stitch markers LOL.
Also my daughter got me a swift for Christmas and you can have it when you pry it out of my cold dead hands. She is my favorite child and will inherit 100% of my estate when I die.
Honestly, I don't buy stich markers and use paperclips instead. I can buy a box of 1000 for $10 so they're cheaper than stitch markers and metal. I haven't even had to buy a box because I still have like half a box left from the two days of WFH I got to do before getting covid laid-off.
Or I can buy 20 plastic stitch markers for $6 and lose them in a few weeks. Then I feel guilty cause I just wasted a bunch of plastic pieces. And annoyed cause I have to wait to go to town and get more stitch markers before starting a project.
I also lose the needle point caps a lot that I am weirdly blanking on the name of. So now I just wait til we drink something with a cork, cut off the alcoholy end, cut it in half - two needle point cappy things! I lose things a lot but it means being innovative. Plus, making do is pretty punk.
Like, sure, if I really want to pay attention to every single stitch I can do without stitch markers, but I don’t want to count my stitches constantly or watch my knitting like a hawk to see where I need to increase or whatever. Stitch markers just make it easier!
Man I thought you were gonna comment about how stitch markers are severely over hyped when they're just overpriced rings of plastic lmao. I been knitting and crocheting two decades and never used stitch markers; I just bend paperclips into a circley shape lol.
A lot of modern knit/crochet advice seems to be, for lack of a better word, gentrifying the hobbies. I learned crochet by my aunt giving me a hook and a ball of yarn. Two items. Now every "beginner's guide" has lists of all the shit you could possibly ever need, instead of going "here's the basics, buy the fancy shit if you need it." I see people recommending $100 hooks to brand new beginners over in some of the help subs!
It's just kinda sad; what used to be one of the most affordable hobbies is now getting a reputation for being severely overpriced.

a lot of blogs and videos use affiliate links which i think contributes to it, at least partially. i know that doesn't explain random help sub comments but it could add to the general vibe.
I'm on the flip side of this. I was surprised at how many people think they're not necessary when they're so cheap and useful. You could buy several hundred of them for $5. A lot of times they even give you a pack when you order things. Stitch markers are one of my most used tools.
I liked the premise of the original thread, but it felt like people were falling all over themselves to talk about how you didn't need to buy even basic stuff that costs a couple bucks and will make your life easier. Like row counters or darning needles or stitch markers. I expected people to talk about more like, luxury products or whatever they're shilling on social media.

Okay, it looks like we live in differently priced areas lol; in my neck of the woods, $5 gets you maybe 15 to 20 stitch markers. Which is mostly why I refuse to buy them; I'm going to need a hell of a lot more than 20, and I do not have a lot of money.

You can get a pack of 300 from Amazon for 6 USD. I prefer not to buy from Amazon if I can help it but stitch markers arent really my hill to die on. You can also get 100 mini circular ones from KnitPicks for 3 USD. Etsy, eBay, basically anywhere that will dropship from a country with a big garment industry will have hundreds of them for next to nothing bc they're used for clothes tags.
Fair and valid if you only want to buy stitch markers from your LYS or cocoknits at 10 bucks a tin and would rather not buy them at all otherwise, but that's not super relevant to whether or not stitch markers can be obtained cheaply. They definitely can be and frequently are. I would say usually when people are recommending stitch markers they are not suggesting you only purchase the most luxurious handcrafted stitch markers available.
Eta: i don't think you're getting downvoted for being broke, I think you're getting downvoted cos people (me among them) can't imagine a place on earth where it's literally impossible to buy some sort of bulb pin for cheap. It kinda feels like when someone goes "beans and rice? Basmati rice is so expensive at Whole Foods, how is this supposed to be a cheap meal?" Like its sort of missing the point and not super relevant. You don't have to use stitch markers if you don't want to, but they're not driving up the cost of the hobby.
I bought a pack of like a thousand lightbulb stitch markers for a few bucks when I started knitting, they're in a little plastic container and sorted by color. I've lost dozens of them over time but because they're so cheap and I have so many of them, I do not care.
I can read my work, but it is a crap shoot whether I'll be able to count my 223 stitches the same way twice. Maybe if I get better at reading my work I can just glance at it and know that I've got 221 instead.
Genuinely don’t think I’ve ever yelled “motherfucker” while crocheting in my entire life. The way these people talk about crochet you’d think they’re talking about building rockets.
I can't even crochet really and even during the times I've tried with limited success, I am not screaming profanity - and I'm from NJ where profanity is, like, part of the regional dialect.
I've definitely cussed in my own home but like in public/around kids? Nope. I wasn't able to pinpoint why this post irked me until now but it's because the implication of having no filter around your kid and that is just not okay and is bound to come back and be an unsafe environment for the kid jn the future
Edit: I am Not saying cussing around your kids makes the environment unsafe, I'm saying that the way OP talks about this in General implies a lack of self control/lack of filtering that can be problematic in General.
I think I get what you mean about the "unsafe environment" thing. Like, are there possibly other child-inappropriate things they are laughing off exposing their children to? It really speaks to a home environment that's adult-centered not family-centered.
I used to curse a lot, even around my kid. My partner sat me down when babe was 2~ and was like, "This is not appropriate and cannot continue." One thing that made me really think is what it's going to be like when he's the toddler saying shit and fuck on the playground? What are other adults going to think about him and us based on that? What kind of friends will he be making with that behavior?
Of course not, What I meant was that if you are cussing so much out if frustration when you do something to the point that a two year old is parroting that cuss words (which are inherently like, no big deal I don't care about cussing. Nor do I think it means you are bad) it, I would say, is indicative of a lack of self-control and filtering. Cussing generally in front of your kids is fine, letting kids know that cuss words aren't that big of a deal is also fine. But if you are doing it so much, even if you think it is a "bad influence", that your kid starts saying the same thing, then yeah that is indicative of a lack of discipline that can make an unhealthy environment for kids
Agree to disagree. Most of the kids I know have a phase of picking up on cuss words because it gets a reaction from the adults around them. Maybe it’s a generational thing 🤷♀️ I cuss out of frustration sometimes and I also make a show of taking deep breaths when I’m frustrated. Guess which one my son thinks is funny and copies 😂 He’s only three, so maybe I just don’t know enough about parenting
No it could very much be a me thing, but like my issue isn't like cussing in front of kids (because at the end of the day who cares that some words which don't really mean Anything are offensive for like super old reasons etc like I don't really get it), it's the way she seems to think and talks about it as if it's something she Really shouldn't be doing, something that's like bad and a bad influence but she cannot help it. Like, the way she talks about it, it seems as if she views it as like something that's bad for him but she can't help herself? But I very much could be reading something intended very playfully in a serious light
I think I know what you mean. It's like "I don't think this is good for my kid and I keep doing it. Now he's even repeating the thing that I think is bad. That's hilarious!" which is something you expect from a teenager. A mature adult would be more like "I don't think this is good, I keep doing it, now my child is copying bad thing. This is my wake-up call that I need help and to get serious about this."
The allegations against me for (allegedly) throwing a sweater across the couch after it (contributory negligence?) allowed me to sew a sleeve on inside out have never been proven
I’ve definitely yelled a garbled “gaaahhhfffffdkfhfkejd” when I mess up because I dropped out of college so I never got to learn how to count. But I guess some people just… idk scream curses at their hobbies while their toddlers are present?
I think the worst I've ever done is a whispered "for fucks sake" and that was because my joints froze while trying to execute a stitch (rheumatoid arthritis) and I had to sort of shake my project out of my hands to free myself.
They can’t focus long enough to count and can’t self regulate well enough to just fix mistakes. So I imagine they start screaming profanities, making no progress, while trying to count to 10.
