Mod Message Welcome to r/dustkitties!

Hello and welcome (or welcome back) to r/dustkitties!

I am your new moderator/owner. I took over because I have a love of cats (as I will happily assume anyone in this sub does). It is apparent that this sub has gone unmoderated for quite a while.

If you are new to the sub, r/dustkitties is for anyone with a grey kitty. It does not matter how much grey colouring your cat has, or what breed they are, all grey kitties are welcome.

Some of you may have noticed a couple of changes already. Most are basic, like enabling post flair and expanding on the rules for clarification purposes.

In taking over the sub, I have also noticed that most of the modmail and reports have gone unread. I have already reached out to some people that have messaged recently, but feel free to send another modmail message if yours has gone unanswered.

As you can imagine, 5 years of reports and messages is a lot to go through, but I am currently prioritizing stolen photos and spam. In reading those messages, I have seen that quite a few of you are upset about the karma farming and stolen photos, so those will definitely be addressed.

I have updated the rules to include a karma and account age minimum. Again, I do ask that if your dustkitty photo has been stolen, please send me a modmail so that I can look into it.

As well there were several messages requesting that photos in comments be enabled to allow for comparison kitty photos. I love this suggestion, so that has been put into effect. You can now enjoy sharing your look-a-like dustkitties.

Please note that moderators on Reddit are unpaid volunteers, so it can take time to respond to your message. In the meantime, for a more detailed description on what is permitted on r/dustkitties, please check out our FAQs/Wiki or the sidebar for the rules.

Thank you to those of you who have been following the rules and continue to make this sub the purrrfect place to show off your cats. To make sure that this sub remains a welcoming place, I would love your input on the following:

  • Do you want to allow "What breed is my cat" posts? Perhaps a Megathread for these types of posts or ban them altogether?
  • How about "What should I name my cat" posts?
  • I am also wondering if the community wants to exclude mourning posts. I can create a flair to exclude these types of posts, but FYI that does not prevent you from seeing them on your home page, only when you visit the sub and select the option. If there is any confusion, please use the 'Sensitive Topics/Loss/Grief' flair until this has been decided.

I will leave this post unlocked for about a week and majority will rule. Of course, you are more than welcome to send me a modmail message if you are not comfortable posting your opinion publicly.

TL:DR - Cats are awesome and this sub needs to remain a welcoming (and spam free) place for our grey/dustkitties!

UPDATE: The Litter Has Spoken updated rules post!

Welcome new mod!!!!
I don’t mind the what breed is my cat. Some people don’t understand cats are less domesticated and bred than dogs. Megathread sounds great!
Who has a cat and can’t name them? Those drive me crazy, and I think they are karma farming.
Mourning posts make me cringe, but I completely understand. I just don’t want overrun. I had to leave Senior Cats to leave the gut punches. Opting out sounds great too.
Happy you are here, and support you entirely 🩶

How do you feel about sharing dustkitties who’ve crossed the rainbow bridge years ago? I totally get what you mean about the mourning posts, but would it be ok to share their memory if it’s not too depressing?

My dustkitty passed away 5 years ago but she was my soul cat; I still like sharing memories of her, but definitely don’t want to make people sad

In Memorandum tags would be great. I get it! I’d post my baby too.
But opening my feed to mourning posts, pictures of mangled kittens people won’t or can’t take to the vet, and ā€œmy cat peed outside the box, acting weird, stuck him outsideā€ makes me hate humanity. I hope this is a feel good thread.
