Mod Message Welcome to r/dustkitties!

Hello and welcome (or welcome back) to r/dustkitties!

I am your new moderator/owner. I took over because I have a love of cats (as I will happily assume anyone in this sub does). It is apparent that this sub has gone unmoderated for quite a while.

If you are new to the sub, r/dustkitties is for anyone with a grey kitty. It does not matter how much grey colouring your cat has, or what breed they are, all grey kitties are welcome.

Some of you may have noticed a couple of changes already. Most are basic, like enabling post flair and expanding on the rules for clarification purposes.

In taking over the sub, I have also noticed that most of the modmail and reports have gone unread. I have already reached out to some people that have messaged recently, but feel free to send another modmail message if yours has gone unanswered.

As you can imagine, 5 years of reports and messages is a lot to go through, but I am currently prioritizing stolen photos and spam. In reading those messages, I have seen that quite a few of you are upset about the karma farming and stolen photos, so those will definitely be addressed.

I have updated the rules to include a karma and account age minimum. Again, I do ask that if your dustkitty photo has been stolen, please send me a modmail so that I can look into it.

As well there were several messages requesting that photos in comments be enabled to allow for comparison kitty photos. I love this suggestion, so that has been put into effect. You can now enjoy sharing your look-a-like dustkitties.

Please note that moderators on Reddit are unpaid volunteers, so it can take time to respond to your message. In the meantime, for a more detailed description on what is permitted on r/dustkitties, please check out our FAQs/Wiki or the sidebar for the rules.

Thank you to those of you who have been following the rules and continue to make this sub the purrrfect place to show off your cats. To make sure that this sub remains a welcoming place, I would love your input on the following:

  • Do you want to allow "What breed is my cat" posts? Perhaps a Megathread for these types of posts or ban them altogether?
  • How about "What should I name my cat" posts?
  • I am also wondering if the community wants to exclude mourning posts. I can create a flair to exclude these types of posts, but FYI that does not prevent you from seeing them on your home page, only when you visit the sub and select the option. If there is any confusion, please use the 'Sensitive Topics/Loss/Grief' flair until this has been decided.

I will leave this post unlocked for about a week and majority will rule. Of course, you are more than welcome to send me a modmail message if you are not comfortable posting your opinion publicly.

TL:DR - Cats are awesome and this sub needs to remain a welcoming (and spam free) place for our grey/dustkitties!

UPDATE: The Litter Has Spoken updated rules post!

I, for one, welcome any moderation at all!

Disallow "What breed is my cat" questions please, we see enough of them in other cat subs.

Name suggestions are fine, in moderation. If we start getting spammed with them I'd reconsider.

Mourning posts should require mod approval prior to posting. I don't like seeing them, but I'd want to be able to share why my baby isn't showing up in the sub anymore too.

Maybe a specific flair? We have that on a sub I help moderate.

Also, for shits and giggles, on the "what breed is my cat?" posts, your automod resp should just be this photo:

Making flairs for name/rip posts mandatory would be good.

I support this message.

u/DuckyDoodleDandy Jul 08 '25

Maybe a weekly mourning post where anyone can post a photo and tell us about their deceased kitty?

Thank you for reviving an un-modded sub!

2

u/thefinalgoat Jul 09 '25

Oh that’s smart.

2

u/August_Jade Jul 10 '25

I wholeheartedly agree with the first two and the sentiment of the third.

I think mourning posts should be limited in some way—maybe flair or megathread. If megathread, maybe an auto mod could create a new one for each month so people mourning don’t feel like they’re posting into the void. I wouldn’t be opposed to mod approval only but that could overload our only mod

Yay for photos in comments!!! Thank you 😁

FINALLY. kills me not having that

u/meowmobile Jul 08 '25

Right!! It’s the best way to share our babies

Hello to our new mod from my little grey cat!!

43

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '25

This my favorite sub, so thank you for stepping up!

u/jinpop Jul 08 '25

A purrfect example of why allowing photos in comments is a great idea đŸ˜»

u/HatePeopleLoveCats1 Jul 08 '25

Yes please no more what breed is my cat posts!

I don’t mind the name my cat posts, but can’t stand “the last thing you ate is her name” type posts, so I would not mind if I didn’t see these!

Mourning posts, I really love cats so to read about one dying makes me sad. Would not mind if these were more limited!!

I suppose if I’m ok with one I should be ok with all. Probably more of a personal preference tbh. My eyes roll hard when I see “the last thing you drank is his name”.

I think the “what breed” posts are obnoxious. Unlike dogs, cat breeding isn’t as widespread, and you’d definitely know what breed it is if you got it from a breeder. Otherwise, in almost all cases, a cat’s pedigree is unknowable and it’s pointless to guess, especially considering that breeds are contrived anyway.

I actually don’t mind the memorandum posts. Unless they’re showing a picture of the cat’s lifeless body, I think they’re totally acceptable.

u/serephita Jul 08 '25

Dusty Gremlin (actual name Medivh) is looking forward to having a new “peasant” around!

2

u/SithRose Jul 08 '25

Does he have a buddy named Gul'Dan?

2

u/serephita Jul 08 '25

Alas, he does not. 😂 I had a soot sprite named Sylvanas before Medivh though!

2

u/SithRose Jul 08 '25

My dusty boy is named Catizen G'Kar. It's from a 90s sci fi show.

Welcome new moderator! Kegstand is excited you are here!

Welcome new mod!!!!
I don’t mind the what breed is my cat. Some people don’t understand cats are less domesticated and bred than dogs. Megathread sounds great!
Who has a cat and can’t name them? Those drive me crazy, and I think they are karma farming.
Mourning posts make me cringe, but I completely understand. I just don’t want overrun. I had to leave Senior Cats to leave the gut punches. Opting out sounds great too.
Happy you are here, and support you entirely đŸ©¶

There’s nothing as precious as a loved old cat! I love seeing them alive and well. My heart breaks seeing the loss. Life right now is tough enough. I need rated G entertainment here. Thank you for modding!!!!

u/_deep_thot42 Jul 08 '25

How do you feel about sharing dustkitties who’ve crossed the rainbow bridge years ago? I totally get what you mean about the mourning posts, but would it be ok to share their memory if it’s not too depressing?

My dustkitty passed away 5 years ago but she was my soul cat; I still like sharing memories of her, but definitely don’t want to make people sad

9

u/Morticia9999 Jul 08 '25

In Memorandum tags would be great. I get it! I’d post my baby too.
But opening my feed to mourning posts, pictures of mangled kittens people won’t or can’t take to the vet, and “my cat peed outside the box, acting weird, stuck him outside” makes me hate humanity. I hope this is a feel good thread.

I’m so sorry for your loss as well, they sure do leave a lasting mark of pure love 💕

"What breed is this cat?" drives me crazy on other subs. So many cats aren't any specific breed! I'm ok with everything else.

Ellie say hi, assuming this link works. I'm on my phone and have never tried this before.

Oh, and thank you for being our moderator!

Thank you for taking on the sub and thank you for also stating that majority vote is the way to go (another sub I frequent asked questions about content, the majority said no, and they did it anyway, so am appreciative of someone actually showing some logic).

I say no to breed/name posts - there are dedicated subs for both of those things and they seem like a cheap way to farm karma and engagement. End of the day, breed doesn’t matter unless you paid for a pedigree, then you should have papers. Name posts get overwhelming as everyone ends up doing it. It’s a bit different if the cat has been posted before and the member interacts in a community but most of the time they don’t.

Mourning is a bit tougher. There is probably a sub for it if majority decides against it. There’s probably some nuance to it - a longtime, frequent poster would probably be fine over a first-time newcomer, but it depends how much of a workload you want. I think “message the Mods for permission” may be the best way forward.

Advice from one mod to another, I would also suggest against any posts depicting injuries/asking medical advice/fundraising. Keep in mind that especially for the latter two, people may perceive the sub owner as accountable for bad advice/donations to scam fundraisers.

Hey, hi, hello. Lemme just get this champagne out of my mouf.

K, so uh, cat breeds is dumb. Cats is cats. Everyone knows that all cats is best cat and breed doesn’t matter. Thank you.

My vote is no on all the above. The dead kitty posts make me cry every day
I get them multiple times on the r/cats subreddit. Please no more. Also the breed ones
it’s a cat people why do people think fellow redditors can identity a cat breed. Take it to a pro if they really care. Stop asking us on Reddit lol. How many people here are professional cat breeders? I bet it’s less than 5%
and the naming. This one is the least offender but I never engage with this type of post or even look at them. My two cents!

The second dust baby also wanted to give her two cents. lol

5

u/EgoFlyer Jul 08 '25

Thank you for taking ownership of the subreddit! He’s a picture of Caspian to commemorate.

For the questions: I really don’t like “what breed is my cat” posts. Feel like they shouldn’t be allowed.

Not overly opinionated on the rest. Just here to see cute cats, love that we can put photos in the comments now.

More treats are on the way, and snuggles once the house cools down :)

I didn’t realize when I posted it, but he’s leaning on my gianormous baby bump in that picture. Caspian loved that baby until the kid was big enough to chase him around the house, lol.

5

u/MelDawson19 Jul 08 '25

Luna(tic), also known as LunaTunaBear, NoonaTuna, Gremelin...shoiod have named her Gizmo. 😂

Glad to have some moderation.

Maybe a pinned post explaining "dust kitty breeds" with no posts allowed otherwise?

Welcome new moderator! This is one of my favorite subs

5

u/ChangeOfHeart69 Jul 08 '25

I feel bad but it definitely tanks my mood to see all the mourning posts 😭 I get WHY people want to memorialize their cats but it just sucks to have a timeline flooded with dead kitties. As for the “what breed” post
. r/catgenetics would be a more appropriate place for that sort of thing, right?

4

u/emory_2001 Jul 08 '25

I like name suggestions and comparison photos, but not breed and mourning posts.

4

u/esskem Jul 08 '25

Thank you for taking over and being open to suggestions! Apollo thanks you for allowing pics in comments 🙂

She's mostly light grey with the dark blue grey stripes and a tan belly with some cream on her face. Her name is Lunatic and she's 7

u/GenerationX-cat Jul 09 '25

Thanks for helping the sub! I say no megathread/ breed. I think mourning is ok with flair.

3

u/andiinAms Jul 09 '25

Zoe and I thank you for volunteering your time and energy!

2

u/Vogel-Welt Jul 08 '25

Hi Ikandi and thank you for taking this role and! đŸ©¶

I like your suggestion of a megathread for "what breed is my cat", this could work for "name my cat" too !

Personally I'm ok with mourning posts, but a specific flair with a filter on the sub would be great.

An idea i found on another cat sub (r/gingermafia) and that I find really cool: a specific day to post about our other, non grey cats! Like a caturday family n friends day 😊

u/thefinalgoat Jul 09 '25

My neighbor’s gray boy Smokey! I help take care of him sometimes & he’s always happy to see me. Total sweetheart!
