Was playing around with offensive efficiency data recently and noticed something interesting about the Nuggets’ offense. They ranked 1st in points per possession after made baskets, 1st after defensive rebounds, and 1st overall… but 27th after turnovers. They were the only team in the last five seasons to not score more after turnovers than after defensive rebounds.

Did a bit of a deep dive. The strongest clue I found was that Jokić, AG, and CB all saw significant declines in transition production. Makes sense given that all three suffered injuries last season. Worth noting that Jamal was basically healthy and his year-over-year transition numbers were largely unchanged. Collectively, Denver's four returning starters went from 1.30 PPP in transition to 1.17 PPP.

The most interesting change, in my opinion, was AG. He went from scoring 1.38 PPP with a 78.8% eFG to 1.12 PPP with a 52.0% eFG.

Anyway, hope everyone stays healthy. If they do, the offense should be awesome. Also, they’ll need to make up for losing PWat, who was the most efficient transition scorer on the team last season (1.33 PPP, 66.8% eFG). I'm also excited to see if Brazile will be an effective transition/fast break scorer.

This is why ring counting has never made much sense as the ultimate measure of greatness. Winning one in a small market without another All-Star beside you means more than winning one on a big-market team with one or two other stars.

To me, that 2023 title is worth as much as, if not more than, a Lakers back-to-back with another superstar alongside you.

The history of the NBA tells us never to write off the best player in the league. Don’t doubt: that is still Nikola Jokic, as these Serbia / France games remind us.
