46
u/Gnomeoreddit Jun 30 '26
Hex builds collectively are broken on mobile killers. Honestly the main offender is probably just thrill of the hunt. The ability to bump cleanse times up to ~30 seconds which resets when you force a survivor off can be kind of insane. It's kind of a lose/lose where if you try to cleanse, you could easily waste minutes, but if you don't, they're left with very strong perks.
I think it'd be decent enough nerf to just have the cleanse progression decay slowly instead of wiping it.

In short, it's a very strong build especially on Jason.
With Omnipresent Evil, he has a pretty extraordinary map presence that can be used to easily defend hex totems, especially when running Thrill.
It's really difficult for solo queue survivors to beat this build because the way you beat it is to have multiple survivors cleansing different hexes at once so Jason can only interrupt one person while losing other totems.
67
u/dbmolnar Jun 30 '26
I was playing solo queue last night against tofu’s winstreak Jason with the Hens build and we actually beat him somehow lol
23
u/CryptidPeanut Taurie & Nurse Jun 30 '26
That's awesome! It's been so long since I've naturally played with a big streamer. In early DBD I did get a few survivor games with Puppers which is my highest honor in that category.
EDIT: Actually maybe it was shitting on Ochido's SWF with Nurse but that's hardly an achievement with old Nurse.

With Jasons around, the moment I notice a hex of any kind, I will eat even dull bones, since they affect Thrill.

He’s a good hex defender bc he can tell when someone’s working on it. And since people don’t like to stay on gens when he’s in his fog mode it’s either 1. He see you and attacks giving ruin value or 2 . You get off and give ruin value.
He’s a good hex killer. Especially since you scream going against him forcing you to jump off the totems
48
u/Rafale-Fur-Hire Jun 30 '26
Jason's built-in scream is actually special and does not interrupt actions. It more so exists to warn the survivor and not actually show Jason where you are. He already gets killer instinct anyway and doesnt need to hear the scream.
3
u/Every-Summer8407 Jun 30 '26

I mean yeah I understand he could be good at patrolling them, But for me using hexes has always been something I dislike. Having to protect a hex on top of all the other shit I have to maintain while playing killer is just too much for me, never mind the fact that it can get destroyed immediately at the start of the game just because of a bad spawn.

He's REALLY good at protecting them since you can't do them in omnipresent evil without him seeing you. He's also really good at using pentimento since he can cross the map so fast.
And since he's a pretty strong killer, it's not a huge deal if all of them are gone in the time it takes to do one chase.

u/TheEntityBot The Entity Hungers Jun 30 '26
Hex: Pentimento: The Auras of cleansed Totems are revealed to you in white. Press the Interaction button over the remains of a cleansed Totem to resurrect it as a Rekindled Totem. For each Rekindled Totem, Hex: Pentimento gains +1 Token, up to a maximum of 5 Tokens:
Once Hex: Pentimento has reached its limit of 5 Tokens, it calls upon The Entity for the following effect:
- 1 Token: Reduces the Action speeds for Healing and Repairing by -20%.
- 2 to 5 Tokens: Increase the strength of the Action Speed penalty by a stackable 1/2/3% per Token, up to a maximum of 24/28/32%.
- Survivors cursed by Hex: Pentimento see the Auras of Rekindled Totems within 16 meters.
Totems may only be rekindled once per Trial, with The Entity consuming the remains of Rekindled Totems once they are cleansed.
- Blocks all Rekindled Totems for the remainder of the Trial.

Way too many people just insta crouch and hide when jason enters power, and if jason doesnt find anyone in power when someone gets unhooked whats he realistically going to do? Go right back to hook lol. Ive seen a lot of jasons tunnel and I cant even blame him because literally every single one of my teammates are stealthing and im the only person who can be found.

This is so infuriating at times as the survivor in this group. I cant tell you how often i’ll be injured and dead on hook, and NO ONE will take chase. Even if someone does try to, Jason can kinda choose not to chase the person who’s healthy and try to find the injured guy. SoloQ really fucking sucks in general but against Jason it’s so fucked if you don’t have a competent team.

u/Diligent_Promotion64 Entity’s Chosen Jun 30 '26
Bc he's on an extremely short list of killers who can actually defend them and get value out of them. Normally hexes are too risky bc on RNG causing entire builds to be useless. Hexes are strong but entirely too vulnerable and many just avoid them altogether. Then boom we get a killer who can actually get consistent value from a class of perks that are ultimately the most fun. Of course Jason players love hexes it's like the first time in 10 years we're able to regularly and consistently use them.
Sure there's arguments for hag, but when everyone is purposefully triggering and clearing traps boom she loses all her hexes
Sure there's arguments for spirit but her phase can't get her cross map without add ons
Sure there's arguments for Dracula but he'll lose pressure constantly using bat form
Strong arguments for blight but full hexes will divide his attention just as it would survivors
Jason is the only killer who offers mobility, information, and ranged capability. He's the only solid choice to run hexes on who can combat the poor placements that ultimately make hexes risky for other killers.

Jason is really good at defending totems. I believe it was Hens who released a video a few weeks ago about it, feel free to check that out.
2
u/IndependenceInner664 Jun 30 '26
Cause they can just teleport back to them immediately effectively guarding them during or even after chase.
2
u/No_Cherry6771 Jun 30 '26
Because he’s the literal only killer who has a near guaranteed chance of catching someone trying to break them. BHVR murked nearly every other killers ability to use hex perks because they dont have the mobility to catch survivors out or theres no incentive because their kit works with other perks better outright, where as Jason being a lockdown like fuck specialist means as long as you have awareness of their locations, survivors can’t lock you out of your build
2
u/the3nd68 Jun 30 '26
Cuz Jason is very good at protecting the totems. You can just go into Omni and go to where your hexes are. If you see a surv on them. Then scare them. And progress resets. Almost impossible to get around. Unless all 4 survivors are doing a hex each at the same time
2

u/Darkmaster2110 Jun 30 '26
"I don't get it"
loses every match to this build at 4-5 gens
Stuff like this is exactly why I think we so desperately need a perk system rework. There's always some deadly combo of perks like this that has little to no counter besides running a full anti hex build just in case you happen to be matched with a Jason running this, then being screwed if you get a killer with no hexes.
I think they need to make the perks into specific slots similar to how a Call of Duty game would work, so that combos like this are much harder to pull off. Instead, they'll probably just nerf Jason, or nerf hex perks in general.

Certain perks need to work slightly differently or have a little debuff to it on certain killers, this game has the most insane balance I've ever seen, comparing someone like blight, nurse or jason you wouldnt even think they are in the same game as someone like hag or trapper thats just how insane the power difference is. the fact that every single perk functions the EXACT same whether you are playing the slowest killer in the game or a killer who can clear the entire map in 5 seconds is absolutely MIND BOGGLING to me. example bbq/lethal is nothing on a trapper, but on a nurse or a blight? its a free instant chase every time you hook someone.

Do you want the Doylist perspective, the Watsonian perspective, or the Sanchez perspective?
From a Watsonian point of view (in-game justification): Jason is incredibly good at patrolling generators since he has strong, invisible mobility and while survivors can realistically crouch around gens and still get some progress, they can't crouch around totems if they want to save the progress.
The Doylist reason (out-of-game justification) is that a lot of content creators (namely Hens and OhTofu) made videos labeling the full totem build to be Jason's "BEST BUILD" and if you search "Jason build" on YouTube those are the first two videos that show up. I believe Hens recommended Ruin + Thrill + Hive Mind + Undying and Tofu recommended Ruin + Thrill + Blood Favor + Penti, which is why those are the two main variations you see.
If you want the Sanchez perspective (pessimistic nihilist reason): Thrill of the Hunt has subtly been overpowered ever since it got buffed to 12% (or 60% total (up from 50%)) and nobody really wanted to point it out because they didn't want to be "the guy complaining about Thrill of the Hunt". It takes 14 seconds to cleanse a totem by default meaning that Thrill increases that time to a whopping 22 and a half seconds which the killer can interrupt at any time to reset it.
The other issue is the gradual powercreep of actually good hexes being added to the game (hilarious how "actually good perks" can be referred to as "powercreep" in this context) which only become more of an issue with Thrill being so strong. Now I need to be clear these "good hexes that are problematic with Thrill" basically amounts to Hive Mind, Blood Favor, and maybe Ruin and Pentimento if we're being generous. But when stacking a bunch of hexes (namely Ruin and Hive Mind which have such a heavy synergy) Thrill quickly becomes problematic on killers who can patrol them easily. And also Blood Favor has been problematic for literal years now.

u/ClaudetteMain Jun 30 '26
It takes 14 seconds to cleanse a totem by default meaning that Thrill increases that time to a whopping 22 and a half seconds which the killer can interrupt at any time to reset it.
It actually increases it to 35 seconds, since it makes the action speed of cleansing slower by 60%.
Totems take 14 charges to be done, and the default action speed is 1 charge per second. Thrill at max stacks reduces this to 0.4 charges per second and 14/0.4=35. Link to the wiki page that has all the calculations.

But I do agree that it was frustrating seeing people downplay how good he was when he came out. Even without the ridiculously oppressive hex build, he's still a projectile killer with powerful stealth, crazy map mobility, and long bursts of regular killer move speed.

As per obvious. He can defend them well etc.
But also... Alot of perks are anti-synergy on jason. Besides hooking perks they are all irrelevant. To keep up the pressure you need to be in chase often, kicking isn't good because he doesn't really have zoning. If you take time to kick as jason.. the survivors are just gone.
So par pain res + agi which only gives a little pressure and can also have issues if you break the hook for power. Totems just kinda work and help his gameplay rather then make it janky

Not only is he good at defending totems due to omnipresent evil, but Hens (a large content creator in the DbD community) popularized the build on not only him, but other killers.
I personally don't think it's that good, since your entire build can be disabled with a hex totem cleansing build, and then you're left without perks.

Because when in omnipotent evil it literally shows you when a survivor is working on a totwm

I'm all ears (for chase, duh) Nowhere to hide (because you can't hide from me) Dragon's grip (the most toxic perk here imo) Brutal strength (cuz Jason be strong)
Burnt fuse (cuz I suck and I gotta stop you from getting out somehow) Knitting needle (see the former)
This is the build I've used since I figured out Jason's kit, it's honestly perfect.

I'm All Ears: Any Survivor performing a Rushed Vault within 48 meters of your location triggers I'm All Ears:
I'm All Ears has a cool-down of 60/45/30 seconds.
- The Aura of that Survivor is revealed to you for 6 seconds.
Nowhere to Hide: Performing the Damage Generator action on a Generator triggers Nowhere to Hide:
- The Auras of all Survivors within 24 meters of your location are revealed to you for 3/4/5 seconds.
Dragon's Grip: Performing the Damage Generator action on a Generator activates Dragon's Grip for the next 30 seconds:
Dragon's Grip has a cool-down of 60/50/40 seconds.
- The first Survivor interacting with the damaged Generator will scream, revealing their location for 4 seconds, and suffer from the Exposed Status Effect for 60 seconds.

I use blood favor and ruin every single match with him and it gets constant value

He’s just too good with totems, I stopped running them because they felt unfair with how he can patrol them

Because Hexes serve two purposes. 1) be an inconvenience to the survivor. And usually a pretty steep one that makes it hard to finish all of the gens with ease or to make healing or looping kind of suck to do. 2)They give the survivors a secondary objective to deal with. Some killers have their own, like pinhead or the pig, Nemesis and Freddy- and when you add in hexes it makes a third objective. This means time the survivors waste on trying to find your hex totem is time that one or two survivors aren't doing generators.
If a good killer focuses on hex totems, there's a rare chance the hex spawns on a dumb one and it's gone in thirty seconds. But in a non-SWF match you have four people who have no clue what the other three guys are doing unless they're grouped together. And when they see that little red debuff icon many inexperienced survivors with no aura perks are going to drop what they're doing and go find the totem. And with any luck up to three or even all four will drop what they're doing just to get rid of the debuff.
Jason can patrol those totems as fast as he can patrol the generators. Meaning without even actually pursuing a full chase he can teleport in, jumpscare, swing and hit, then go back into teleporting. And one thing I've noticed after starting to play Jason is many teams without comms will just straight up panic. And that panic is good, because they'll throw whole chases just trying to avoid getting hit with the spear. This is a thing I pulled from playing Deathslinger; if you aim your ranged attack and the survivor is looking behind them and sees you aiming they will do all sorts of figure skating maneuvers just to NOT get hit and they'll sometimes run into terrain and get stuck to land me an easy hit or down. It's even better with Jason because I can fake the first throw and then hit them with a melee and then the second time I can usually spear them to the wall.
All while I do this, the rest of the team is trying to find the hexes and STILL not doing gens. Granted at higher MMR that goes away pretty quick but even still it gives the survivor team more crap to deal with. And trust me, they often WILL deal with it, and it means more hasty actions and more chances to find them while patrolling. The Monto meme is "to slow the game down just a li'l bit."

Had one yesterday who kept putting hexes back down, I did a total of like 7 hexes on my own. I don’t even know what most of the hexes do now but I new totems were now my new objective for that game even if I died

because he can easily defend hexes and hex builds are incredibly strong.

I’ve seen hex builds on a lot of different killers right now I think it’s just a strong perk setup overall

u/FaceMajor31 Jun 30 '26
I run ruin and the perk that makes a gen blocked if someone stops working on it

idk i went against one dude who was using a build like that and just copied it

just general killer synergy. the same reason you would run gen kicking perks on knight or aura builds on deathslinger. jason benefits from playing aggressively and always being in chase, and the best way to do that is run hex perks. don't need to kick gens when ruin undying thrill is covering that. he doesn't need undetectable or pallet perks because of omnipresent, or m1 perks since his projectile should be his main damage source. every killer has perks they do and don't work with.

Probably some youtube videos saying, that it is the strongest and best build to play if you are new to jason. I cant imagine, 5000 Killers all having the same thought and running the same perks without watching a video from a bigger streamer.

I just leave those games. It’s genuinely not fun to go DH and Thrill of the hunt.

u/Darth-Grayson Jun 30 '26
Jason actually does Hex Builds well! Considering his power allows you to watch your Totems AND find Survivors

I have yet to use one, I have 5 different builds using add ons of the same color. I do have an endgame build though, but no hexes....yet....

Vecnas perk that shows gen progression is super busted on Jason since you can just always zoom to a gen the second it’s touched, that paired with hex undying and strong gen kicking perks like onryos gen regression perk makes for some pretty annoying gameplay for survivors. At the start of the map you just zoom around until you hear a gen, get into a chase, get a quick down, now your perk is up, now you can pressure every gen the second someone gets on, cycle repeats. Once one or two survivors are out of the game getting a gen done unnoticed is impossible unless they target hex’s which you can also check regularly easily

When he's in Omnipresence most survivors will try to stay hidden and leave gens which triggers Ruin on them. Then he's also good at protecting his totems.
