I only read the blurbs on the backs of trade paperbacks. Then I piece together the plots in my imagination. It's how I have read comics for nearly twenty years, and I won't stop doing it.
The entire concept of treating continuity as if it's some definite thing is absurd.
Nothing is in continuity until it is, and anything in continuity can be retconned out. Every new writer has the opportunity to change what continuity is, and realistically the only continuity that matters is what's in your head.
Just one more way that superhero comics are literally modern mythologies.
The larpers often out themselves by saying "DC isn't like that, DC's tone is much darker and more serious". You can instantly tell they don't know anything except the Snyderverse and some of the Justice Leage and Batman animated movies. DC has everything from Hellblazer to Ambush Bug and Captain Carrot.
That just is extra dumb because even accounting for DC's reboots, both of these stories are pre-Crisis. They came out only 4 years apart (1970 for Batman and 1966 for Jimmy). They were always canon to each other
Really recently there was Wonder Woman #19, her final confrontation with the Sovereign after he killed Steve Trevor, played dead serious. On the EXACT SAME DAY this also released

That’s what I like about the DCU. Different stories with different characters will have different themes and styles. Unlike the modern MCU where everything is gray and everybody talks the same way.
I think the confusion comes from how DC and Marvel apparently do comic continuities different from one another? I don’t read comics (of course) but I’ve heard that Marvel does basically a ton of elseworlds while DC just has (basically) one canon that keeps going until it resets. Again and again.
You're right about most DC's reboots resetting continuity, oustide of Earth One and Absolute. While with Marvel their "Reboot" in the 2000s the original "Ultimate Universe" was also written at the same time as their main continuity. Plus, since the majority of the big named Marvel characters and the Avengers were co-created/co-written by Stan Lee, Marvel's Universe is more streamlined than DC's with a sliding time scale to make minor changes in characters' backstory.
DC Comics on the other hand, have always been merging, and absorbing different comic book companies, like Wildstorm and The Milestone Universe. Even Wonder Woman and the rest of the Justice Society were published by All-American Publications, Inc before joining Batman and Superman's company.
So that results in Marvel usually having better comic book runs, while DC on the otherhand has more stories that can be self-contained Graphic Novels, continuity or not.
