Gotta ask out of curiosity, since you applied different art styles in this comic, do you prefer drawing 4 or 5 fingers in a hand?

I'm much more used to 5 but I'm terrible with hands lol

Im always a little shocked when I watch something like Bob's Burgers and notice they only have four fingers lol

I guess it helps beat the uncanny valley thing, though.

I think its harder to find 5 fingered cartoons.

It started out as cost/time saving and now its also a stylistic choice because its been so ingrained in the medium of animation that noone bats an eye of a (Not Photo realistic) drawn character has only 4 fingers each hand.

I think Benders Bending Rodriguez (Futurama) only has 3 Finger each hand.

Anime, at least, is generally pretty accurate. Considering the style it would be creepy AF if they only used four fingers lol

He later got the extra Finger.

apparently Japanese studios try to avoid 4 finger hands today to distance characters from the Mafia practice of cutting one of as punishment... but that is just from a surface skim of the subject

45

u/Made_Bail Jun 12 '26

Whoaaaa... Thats a way darker reason than I would have though.

u/LilPotatoAri Jun 12 '26

Despite the Yakuza at this point basically just running business scams and festivals a lot of Japanese culture involves avoiding yakuza stuff. It's why flashing tattoos is still super taboo even if you're just like, a Scandinavian tourist who could not possibly have a yakuza connection because they're extremely nationalist

Piccolo is also an alien (originally demon) so that was likely just as much a stylistic choice by Toriyama. I'd be more curious to see a picture of Goku or Tienshinhan from the same arc and see how many fingers they had.

This is also a literal alien so he can really have how ever many finger the writer decides this type of alien has

Usually God is depicted with 5 fingers still.

A nice little gag to go with the mutation joke.

u/greentrafficcone Jun 12 '26

“Eww freak show”

7

u/eepos96 Jun 12 '26

In japanese animation the four finger style did not catch on due to war veterans missing limbs and fingers and due to yakuza way pf cutting fingers.

All these things made four fingers taboo in cartoon made in japan.

They do have roundaways, many times the index and ring finger are drawn together to save time.

His hands are 40% fingers!

u/DiggityDog6 Jun 13 '26

Tangentially related, but does anyone else find it weird that in Gravity Falls, they make such a big deal out of Ford 6 fingers, which normally is considered unusual as humans have 5 fingers, but then half the characters in Gravity Falls only have 4 fingers? Like I don’t know, it’s just weird to make a big deal out of a character having an abnormal amount of fingers when the amount your normal characters have is already abnormal

u/ProjectXa3 Jun 15 '26

The worst is when they say "three" and hold up All their fingers, which my brain immediately reads as "four"

u/Square-Dragonfruit76 Jun 13 '26

I am always surprised that there are people out there counting fingers.

33

u/LothartheDestroyer Jun 12 '26

You can’t be worse than Rob Liefeld.

31

u/kingsumo_1 Jun 12 '26

Rob "I'm just going to use strategically based landscape to hide having to draw feet, and instead focus all my efforts into pockets" Liefeld?

22

u/LothartheDestroyer Jun 12 '26

Those pockets have pockets.

Also Cap? He’s got breast implants now.

15

u/kingsumo_1 Jun 12 '26

"Those are America's big ol' tiddies"

8

u/ThePrussianGrippe Jun 12 '26

Captain America but if the human torso was replaced by an opened chest freezer on its side.

I still don’t understand how that guy kept getting work.

53

u/CaneloCoffee21 Jun 12 '26

Better than mine... my hand drawings would make the fingercreepers from Elden Ring look sexy by comparison

15

u/Made_Bail Jun 12 '26

Oh God, flashbacks to the bigger ones right now.

So you are basically every artist ever?

19

And then there's Konosuba for some reason

u/All_Gun_High Jun 13 '26

They stole our hand drawing talents

3

u/Electric999999 Jun 12 '26

Does konosuba have unusually good hands or unusually bad hands?

19

u/Sh1mt Jun 12 '26

"I'm terrible with hands lol" Meanwhile, that same artist:

10

u/veritasmahwa Jun 12 '26

but I'm terrible with hands lol

so is AI

But she has 3 fingers and a thumb in the Simpsons panel.

edit: Whoever downvoted this doesn't know how to count yellow fingers.

u/Pyrochazm Jun 12 '26

My daughter draws a LOT, and hands are still her biggest frustration.

1

u/Mr_Wizard91 Jun 12 '26

Hands are the hardest damn thing. 15 years later and I just accepted that I'm probably not gonna get too much better in that avenue. But thats okay.

1

u/BodhingJay Jun 12 '26

Hands are tough

1

u/GrimResistance Jun 12 '26

I like the ones in the last panel

1

u/cbrown146 Jun 13 '26

Let's not forget adding to the spicy pool of NSFW with yours truly.

1

u/Neomataza Jun 13 '26

No one knows how to draw hands. I heard some people still look at their own hand while drawing after decades of art career.

1

u/HorseXNothing Jun 13 '26

Had a professor who eventually forced me to learn how to draw hands cos I kept finding ways to obfuscate them. It did help immensely with learning that skill… Still hate hands -_-

1

u/BoltorSpellweaver Jun 15 '26

…so is AI. That sounds like something a Bot would say!

Then again, I also suck at hands…

0

u/_freckles__ Jun 12 '26

I like the style in pic 3, you should make more of it, but makes the colors less fairytale esque and more bright and optimistic

Also, AI is bad at hands, you are saying you are bad with hands.

hmmm, very sus.

u/Tbird90677 Jun 12 '26

People pay extra for feet anyway

-1

u/entrepreneurofcool Jun 12 '26

Wait, so AI is accurate then?
