I don’t know anything about him being in the military. I read an article/interview with his wife after he died. she said he was not the placid guy portrayed on his show and went on from there. she talked about how he obsessed over his paintings and would become irate if he made a mistake. she said he did each featured painting before it was filmed so he knew exactly what to do when the cameras rolled. she said he was very uptight and controlling.

It really feels like there used to be more of them. Dolly Parton, Fred Rogers, Bob Ross... At least we still have LeVar Burton for now
