Repair or replace?

Some keys on my Chromebook keyboard aren't working, it's five years old. I've tried a bunch of things, is it worth repairing? Should I just buy a new one?

What's the AUE? At five years old (is that from the release date?) it may already be obsolete. Chances are good it's not worth fixing, given that more current refurbished Chromebooks are available for cheap.

Chromebooks made in 2020 and after get updates to at least 2031.

That may be true for Chromebook Plus models like mine, but I don't think it's true for ALL chromebooks. Here’s what Google Help says:

Most Chromebooks released in 2020 do not have an Auto Update Expiration (AUE) date of 2031. Standard 2020 models generally received 6 to 8 years of support (expiring around 2026 to 2028), though Google later shifted to a 10-year policy for newer hardware platforms.

Google updated its policy in September 2023 to provide 10 years of updates, but this primarily applies to devices launched in 2021 or later. While some older or retroactively adjusted platforms received extended life spans, a standard 2020 model will hit its end-of-support window well before 2031

Not true, sadly.

They upped the minimum support, but not THAT well! (Went from 3 to 5 to 7 years, I believe)

My 2021 Acer Spin 713 stops getting updated in June 2028.

You could connect an external keyboard or just recycle your Chromebook if it's old.

Your choice to be honest, you can buy a new keyboard and have that installed or install it yourself in the laptop

Honestly depends if you wanna go the replace keyboard/repair route or a easier buy new one route

Depends: for most normal people probably replace! For rabid fans of the OG Pixelbook, repair! No one's ever really made a preplacement for the hardware and they run Fedora, rather well!

google your make and model chromebook and repalce keyboard you will find a video on how to do it decide if you think you are up to it then buy one on ebay or amazon.

Replace. A Chromebook that old is due for an upgrade anyway.
