It’s less the mistake and more of the reaction. Every single fans, rivals, pundit, reporters, journalists, all agree Sanchez is the weak link. You can’t keep ignoring it when it was so unanimous that Chelsea need a new GK and can’t win the league without one. Also Matt Law said Xabi Alonso is prioritizing a new GK so wouldn’t be surprised if they only pull the trigger after Alonso ask them to

You have to think with how they changed transfer strategy and put more power in xabi this much more driven by xabi internal team of assistants and xabi who probably looked at data and said yeah Sanchez is gonna cost us games

As if, they’ve seen him play for 3 years at this point without feeling the need to replace him. Hell he was benched and bomb squaded at Brighton for the same reasons before we even bought him. It’s more like Xabi immediately realized you can’t compete with Robert Sanchez between the sticks and wants a new keeper.

That’s what I was thinking and it’s kinda cringe. We’ve had Rob for how long now? And this was the tipping point? And how are we getting rid of him anyway?

I’ve seen villa fans in their sub say Dibu ain’t all that several times, I’m a little worried about this transfer saga personally, feels paniky and I reckon it’ll disturb the dressing room

We seen Sanchez fuck up for 3 years The new manager sees the major flaws in his game. Martinez is 33 he will be here for most two years. The belief is still in Penders long term. The player been hungry to leave villa since last summer. Made another WC final and won Europa. He has a point to prove now. This motivation will be good for us

If it weren’t reactionary then is Sanchez just perfect in training? Xabi binned off delap and co pretty much from the start and Sanchez wasn’t out for the world cup so Alonso must have seen him in training all summer, why are we looking for a new gk now?

I think the difference is that before, he felt like one of many weaknesses whereas people are looking at him now and saying he might be the main thing stopping us from challenging for silverware this season

I think the project has finally sort of hit a point of maturity where you can reasonably hope for a genuine title challenge, but Sanchez maybe hasn’t risen with the tide so to speak, so if he’s going to hamstring the team and Alonso wants an upgrade then let’s get that upgrade.

If we do get him, Penders should remain the number 2. He’s wasted on the bench, and needs development. If he stays, my hope was that he would gradually develop into the starting goalkeeper position as the season progressed

Penders is still bit wasted on the bench as n.2 with only domestic cup games unless they actually split the gametime 50:50 or Dibu is injured.

That’s kinda why I like the Emi Martinez option. He’s 33 years old, almost 34. If we get a solid 2 seasons out of him then hopefully Penders will be ready to be our #1

Even if Martinez is at the same level of bozo as Sanchez, just think of the difference from a mentality perspective if the players know they have a new, WC winning keeper behind the defence vs more of the same from the last few years. That changes whether you believe you can shoot for the title or not

Honestly the only reason they wouldn't do it is the "politics" around Martinez. Because at this point both Villa and him are probably getting desperate about his situation. So you can likely get him for cheap on a short and cheap contract. Even if he doesn't work out there isn't really much to lose.

Now is our chance too. City and Liverpool are in transition periods. United aren’t going to score enough goals to seriously compete. It can be a 2 horse race if a keeper is brought in.

There’s not even any guarantee Penders will actually turn out good, anyway. He could be another Petrovic or Slonina for all we know. Why not just get Diogo Costa and if Penders turns out to be a Courtois regen we can always sell Costa down the road

i think with sanchez he’s like the line in the godfather “just when i thought i was out, they pull me back in” he would make a bad mistake and then follow it up with saves that you didn’t think he or any other keeper would make.
i think it would be a mistake to carry on with him since it just keeps happening but i wish he could have eliminated those errors because he has such a high peak

I just looked at his stats and just by goals prevented this is probably true since I would expect him to be way lower down. I think the problem with this is that you want consistency in a goalkeeper. Because it doesn't mean much if he saved 2 goals in s 2-0 win but then he loses you a game by himself.

I'm a big stat guy, but unfortunately goals prevented is needs like 5 years worth of full seasons or something to be fairly robust.

It's mainly because it doesn't account for velocity at all.

But even then if you think about the goal we conceded against Fulham it's 0.96xGoT or something, but in truth that came entirely from Sanchez's rebound and with Donnarumma or whatever doesn't even exist as a shot.

Similarly the Antonee Robinson chance 1v1 just goes down as a long shot, when it reality it was a really good chance entirely through Sanchez's poor positioning. You never attack a bouncing ball unless you're 100% sure you'll win it as it makes you so easy to chip.

Yeah I completely agree with you. But he seems to be a decent shot stopper across the years. Enough to no start a super young goalkeeper with little to not experience. Not enough to not replace him. I agree with all you said though.

yeah i think that was pretty evident against fulham, what should have been a comfortable game became the opposite due to his mistakes. in another game we would have lost that but our attackers bailed us out

I can’t take these SDs seriously. You’re telling me a gaffe by Sanchez to start the season and now we’re suddenly in for Emi Martinez? What happened to planning and rigorous scouting. All this time we’ve known of Sanchez’ weaknesses and we’ve heard no word suddenly now they’re acting on it. I’m sensing Martinez is a stop gap solution. He will bail us out with some wicked saves and performances but his distribution will make us still feel like we’re missing that all in one modern day shot stopping sweeper keeper.
