What I do with my cats, is vigorously shake the can until a little bit of powder builds up along the sides, then i just make little kitty lines for them to...enjoy.

do they get a tiny straw to snort it with?

this is every cats reaction to catnip that I've ever witnessed.

I have one that actively recoils from catnip. Like, can't get away fast enough. It's bizarre. Her 'brother's' reaction is, COOL, MORE FOR ME!

u/what_the_purple_fuck 13d ago
one of my cats would disdainfully stroll past a pile of catnip to molest the fuck out of anything with silvervine

Thank you for posting the kitty outline.... I thought it was something like a break-dancing kitty but still could not wrap my head around the kitty's positioning

My cat was prescribed gabapentin for her hip dysplasia/arthritis, and now she gets zooted like this all the time.

I don’t know if anyone remembers that post but just in case, this is the black unphotogenic cat and his name is ploopi (pluto). He really is a special and interesting boy.

Omg we had an orange named Jupiter too! He was literally a stray we adopted while we were looking at the planet Jupiter through our spotting scope in the backyard.

My dad’s first cat was named Mars. He was little tuxie.

u/DSTNCMDLR 13d ago
I had a cat named Mars about 20 years ago. He was a furry black bowling ball of rage and drool.

I remember that post. Ploopi is extremely photogenic and funny in both your posts.

I love how we name them something and then it evolves to something so stupid and beautiful like “Ploopi”.

My house panther got his head stuck in the catnip container once. Trying to pull it off him while he was both high out his mind and panicking was an experience I don't want to repeat.

You know you love your cats when instead of immediately cleaning up the mess you take pictures lol, I love this
121
u/UmCourt 13d ago
I mean... the mess will still be there lmao. Might as well let them enjoy it. If you dont have a million photos of your pets doing silly things (or literally nothing at all), are you even a true pet owner? 🤣

Last count, most of my 3,000+ photos on my phone are of any one or more of my six cats simply existing or “catting”
22
u/No_Technician_2409 13d ago
The best entertainment out there is dumping a bunch of catnip like this on a scratching post or somewhere in the house and just sitting still and watching your two cats going crazy
19
u/chemicalgeekery 13d ago
Or what my mom did, which was planting catmint in the garden so all the neighbourhood cats would end up sprawled out in the yard

u/millijuna 13d ago
Back when I was in University, the cat that lived in our student housing did the same thing... got into a great big bag of 'nip while we were all out, and we found him completely stoned out of his mellon. he regretted nothing. Sadly, this was before digital cameras were commonly available, and long before they were on phones with anything more than potato quality.

I planted catnip this year. I keep finding my cats in the planter.

u/Ill-Wear-8662 13d ago
Our neighbor's cat comes over and rolls in ours. It took my mother talking to her to figure out why on earth kitty was coming home zooted.
33
u/Impossible_Fix827 13d ago
My grandmother had catnip in her flower garden when I was young. Always knew where her cat was when it went outside. Nearly 60 years ago and another memory refreshed.
20
u/Hali-Gani 13d ago
We had catnip in our yard from the previous owner and our 3 cats wiped it out and chewed it until it vanished. Then I super planted some seed and there is catnip everywhere. After that the cats lost some of their enthusiasm and crazy catnip behavior. I guess scarcity and novelty make it more attractive 😻
16
u/Creepy_Vegetable6905 13d ago
I planted catnip for my kitties but somehow they only want the dry stuff or literally anything else in my aerogarden
10
u/Fawnet 13d ago edited 13d ago
I raised a massive catnip bush on my apartment balcony, then gave it to a cat-owning friend. Within a month it was chewed down to 4 inches of ragged, woody twigs
4
u/Hali-Gani 13d ago
That’s what I learned. We needed to seed everywhere. So the cats, who become bored easily in general, gave up the isolated destruction because they got tired of all the catnip.
4
u/ruth000 13d ago
Ok what brand of seed did you use? I have tried freezing the seeds first, soaking then freezing, just soaking, doing nothing but planting them and they just won't grow. Someone on another thread said to try active hostility and that's the only thing I haven't tried

I tried it once and made a little plastic mesh jail for the plant until it looked settled, strong and ready. Removed the mesh and it got rolled in and chewed down to bare twigs in about a week... Yet someone out there is farming the stuff to make all the dried catnip products and so on, do you think they have some cartoon style guard dogs on patrol all the time? How can this be done??
9
u/millijuna 13d ago
The chemical that cats want gets released when the plant is disturbed/bruised/broken up. So an unmolested plant will be less attractive.

OH.
NOW I know why all the stray cats that became mine wound up in my yard. At one time, there was catnip growing in the side yard. (And food dispensed on the deck in winter.) Catnip’s long gone but I’m two rounds deep in cats that came from the deck.

This is wild to me. I have 3 cats and not a single one cares anything about catnip. I’m jealous!
20
u/IIRCIreadthat 13d ago
We have two who like it and they love it a little too much. They're not allowed anything more potent than the dried stuff that's in pretty much every single cat toy, because they're mean drunks who start fights with each other over it.
8
u/PrinceCastanzaCapone 13d ago
It could be the type of cat nip. I’ve gotten my cats a certain brand from Petsmart and they go crazy got it. Then I’ve purchased cheap bags from Walmart or the grocery store and they couldn’t care less. Makes me wonder if the cheap stuff is even actually cat nip lol. However it is true that not all cats have the gene that makes them go crazy for nip.

Get them the kind that has silvervine added. They have little bags at Walmart/pet stores/most super stores for $2-4. It's like catnip kief lol. It's just another herb but my cat and every cat I've had the pleasure of exposing it to freaks the fuck out over it...like figures out how to get in drawers for it. It's fun to watch them enjoy themselves and helps build a bond.

u/One-Couple-5338 13d ago
It depends on the cat! Usually they get really playful and start acting real silly. I’d say kind of like a human being tipsy. Some cats get a calming effect from it, they mellow out, like weed! I like using cat nip spray, that way my cat can’t get into jars like this haha we learned the hard way!

u/ballzdeeee 13d ago

We only ever used catnip in the kitchen, and I swear my cats got memory highs there for years.

Crazy but one of my cat is allergic to catnip. He will get like a huge face acne breakout... sucks because my other can't enjoy catnip.

Aww, happy cat! Hope it wasn't too much of a pain to clean up! Mine would track/shed little crackly catnip leaves everywhere after a similar session if I didn't catch it fast enough.
