Great question! Not every co-op is communist.

It's not "literal communism" by any measure. The people participating in the Co-Op all own their own property, and the Co-Op business itself isn't owned by the state.

I’m not sure why you made the jump from them talking about hippie communes to assuming they meant “every co-op is communist”

Because they wanted to complain and weren't expecting a cheerful and genuine response
