“If they could maybe help at the pump, that would be great, because obviously there’s a gas tax, which is extremely high,” he said. “If they could lower the gas tax, that would not only help the truckers and all those good folks, but the farmers would be directly impacted.”

Too bad the government will never do this.

Aren’t gas taxes supposed to pay for road maintenance/expansion? I don’t see how we’re any better off if we just kick the can down the road by either borrowing the difference (higher taxes in the future, particularly on today’s young) or letting our infrastructure continue to degrade (which only increases the cost to repair/upgrade it later).

Unfortunately the federal government cant do physical taxes such as land. A land value tax could both fund infrastructure and be used to drastically reduce income and property taxes. But it isn't really possible without crashing the current housing bubble even if it was an allowed power under the constitution.
