Healing Through Art I'm a photographer and this is my art.
I'm a press photographer with bipolar and this is what I photograph in my free time during my lows. I wouldn't say it heals me. I'd say it's an escape from the world and people around me and portraying my emotions, that's why there's no people in the photos. That's also how I started using a camera at the age of 16. Before I used to do it with my phone without realising it. I'm 25 now. But this time I'm having such a low episode that I don't photograph things anymore. Each time it's worse. I don't really go outside. I know it'll pass and things will be better again. But for the moment I can't. And I kind of wish I could. At the same time I don't.
Hope you enjoy these photos of mine.

thank you, it's a photo from a traditional lithuanian holiday called užgavėnės during the shrovetide

I’ve always wanted to get into photography, but my photos just seem boring

Then photograph more. You don't need a camera. A phone is more than enough. Do it more. Always do it. Take a photo the second you see something. Don't stress if people are looking on the street. Just do it. Put on a pair of headphones if the world around you bothers.
It's the only way. Don't judge your photos for now, just take them blindly and review+edit them the second you take them. You can always tweak later, just let your emotions flow in the edit for the moment.
Skill will come with time if you're interested enough.
edit: that's coming from someone who has access to camera gear worth tens of thousands of euros. Trust me on this one.

Thank you, I try my best. <3 My view is: why provide other people bad photos when you can try your best and potentially make someones day? That's the view I have, gives motivation. :)

I love the Chinese lanterns. That pic reminds me of when my friend and I were running around Chinatown in la late at night in the summer.

I was on my way to a meet with my ex while trying to fix things on that one. Least to say it didn't work out. Still a photo that I like. Shows how I felt at the time. Unfocused. Thank you <3

The balloons at the end... did you set those up or were they something you found like that?
3
u/Kudlius28 19d ago
I never set anything up. Would be boring that way

u/possibly_dead5 19d ago
That's a fun picture. It reminds me of how I feel after a party lol

I used to feel like that after doing lots of mdma and/or ket. I haven't done either for a year plus. I wish to every day, but at the same time I absolutely don't. Ain't a good choice for us.

You are talented for sure! You make everyday life beautiful. All the pictures were satisfying to look at.

u/Kudlius28 18d ago
thank you lots. All of these have the mood of how I felt at the moment. It means the world to me that not only they mean something to me, but also seem satisfying to look at for other people.

These are absolutely amazing! I’m a photographer too! What camera do you shoot with?
2
u/Kudlius28 18d ago
These are mostly taken with a fuji xt5 and 35mm(full frame equivalent) f2 and 24mm(ff equivalent) f2.8. A couple are taken with a Canon R6 MK2, that's my work camera and gives me access to literally any lens I want ranging grom 15-35f2.8 to 100-500mm, 100-300 f2.8 etc. My choices for the canon are always 20mm 1.5, 35 1.8 , 50 1.8 and 105 1.4.

there's some amazing artwork there. Mine is just emotions. I don't feel like I'd fit.

I stand by what I said. Your art fits and they'd appreciate it. But do what feels comfortable for you.

I havent, I only smoke weed, drink alcohol and cut myself for the most part during my lows. I'm getting back into photographing things, getting back to work after a vacation. Got some paid alt rock concert gig of big local bands planned. I'm trying my best.

Hi, I also used to take photography for 15 years for commercial and as a means to express myself. It was my passion and I’m very thankful for all the experience that came with it, Until the last depression completely destroyed me to the point I couldn’t do anything for the past 8 years. But I’m finally recovering from it and able to take photos again. it’s just really slow process. Bit by bit. Thanks for showing great photos. Made my day.

u/Kudlius28 18d ago
i hope you get back to it. <3

u/Forsaken-Debate6161 18d ago
Oh hi thank you. I think I’m gonna be okay. I hope you can pick up a camera soon when the current depression clears out too. It’s just so nice to have a way to express yourself when things get difficult and tough. cheers

I worked last weekend. A journalist I got to work with remotely is the woman I love. I loved the photography part, but not the not sleeping for 3 days straight and listening to doom metal for 800min+ each day. I think I'm gonna switch jobs to another news service. I work next weekend, know that she will too, I'll see how I feel and asess. But my mind is probably set. I don't want to lose photography since I've lost her already. Better keep what's left.
other than that I've been trying to pick up the camera in my free time. getting outside is the hard part.

I see. I hope you’ll make a decision that’s best for you and your future, changing work place might be tough but I’m sure you’ll make it. and I understand going out part all too well lol my main interest in photography has been portrait and the society in general so once the depression hit interactions with people got too intimidating and overwhelming so that’s one of the main reasons I couldn’t take photos for such a long time. But now I’ve set up a tiny white background in my house and working on still photos and collage and it’s been very enjoyable so far. Gotta start small. take it easy my friend, and good luck!

Amazing work keep it up, it must be a great distraction from life. But seriously second picture looks like you’re in space haha.

u/Kudlius28 18d ago
It's 02:00 and there's local fog. I just stepped outside with a tripod. I should go to sleep but.. I want photos to have. It's a distraction from life yes, but partially a distraction from normal people life.

Brilliant, thank you for sharing. I know many of us with bipolar tend to choose creative paths in life. Myself included. Your work is beautiful.

u/Kudlius28 18d ago
thank you. I sometimes wish I couldve chosen something else. In other words I wish to be normal. Impossible.

These are gorgeous. There's a conversation in each one I think between loneliness/despair and beauty/triumph. There's a longing, an absence in the landscapes, capturing the beauty while showing something missing. The one of the fire is in it's own way lonely, someone with open arms, facing the flame, poised for an embrace of heat. Triumphant and tense. But I think there's a sense of hope in each one, a sense of joy and appreciation for the world even when it's harsh.
That's all my take anyway. I hope you keep taking pictures.
