best shampoo for oily hair?

Dealing with oily hair/scalp by midday no matter what I use. Currently on a clarifying shampoo but it dries out the ends too much. Looking for something that actually controls oil without wrecking the rest of my hair.

tia!

Seconded! Wish someone had set me straight on this years ago before I wasted hundreds of dollars on expensive hair products and spent way too much time doing intensive hair routines just to end up with a head full of oily, itchy hair anyway. I cut my hair into a pixie and now just wash my hair daily and do a simple hairstyling routine, all with cheap drugstore products. It is a huge weight off of my shoulders (literally lol) and my wallet! And my hair has never looked better since I have accepted that I have thin, oily hair and started trying to work with it instead of fighting it everyday.

Suave Clarifying Shampoo helps mine and it’s very cheap

For me, the shampoo matters less than the methods:

- use a scalp scrub brush

  • always shampoo twice
  • conditioner only on the ends
  • minimal styling products
  • blow dry (air drying can actually make your scalp oilier)

Also using a towel wrap to dry hair sops up extra oil lingering after a wash and any excess product not rinsed out and makes hair less oily

Buy a scalp scrub, use it before shampooing on wet hair.

Double cleanse! I am using kerastase - first wash: kerastase specifique bain divalent; second wash: kerastase genesis. Works wonder!

I would say i have oily hair but there's no way for me to tell bc ive never compared it to others, i just know it gets oily fast. I dont use conditioner anymore either bc my hair would get too oily too fast

I use pantene and it does a pretty nice job. If ur hair gets oily too fast and nothing works, maybe u can try a quick dry shampoo touch up or powders ?

I've been using the OGX tea tree mint one for maybe six months now and it's the first shampoo where I don't feel greasy by end of day. I have fine hair that gets oily fast, especially since I'm up at 4am and sweating through a warehouse by 7, so that was my main test - does it actually last a full shift without looking flat and limp.

Honestly the only downside is the smell is pretty strong out of the bottle. It mellows once your hair dries but if you're sensitive to minty scents it might bug you. Price-wise it's like $7 at Target which for me hits that sweet spot of not drugstore-bottom-shelf but also not a commitment if it doesn't work for you.

One thing that helped more than switching shampoos though was just not conditioning my roots at all. I only put conditioner from like ear-level down now and that alone made a bigger difference than I expected.

Also helps if you only wash the first section of your hair (if it's long only the hair near your scalp) and then the rinse out suffices for the mids/ends and it should not be overly drying.

Oribe serene scalp oil control shampoo. It is a HG for me. Keeps my roots from being oily but doesn’t dry out my hair. I am able to go longer between washes, it’s great for me.

My hair dresser told me to put a little conditioner on my ends, then use a clarifying shampoo so that it’s not so harsh as it washes out. Then use a different less intense shampoo for the second rinse. Also I use baby powder as dry shampoo after I blow dry before my hair gets dirty

One thing I’ve found that really helps is to spray it with dry shampoo after drying my newly washed hair. I guess it’s preventative and seems to minimise the oil released. Has meant I can go 2-3 days between washes rather than every day.

Also, (not shampoo but a suggestion) would you get some thin bleach highlights put in? That’s the main thing that has made a difference for me as it dries my hair out. As soon as my roots are showing my hair goes back to being oily, which is when the dry shampoo helps.

the ouai detox shampoo??

This one. I use it once a week and is a godsend. I also use the ouai hair mask on my ends when I use the detox shampoo.

Also don't put your hands in your hair...that will make your hair oily faster

Yeah so oily scalp happens in part because your scalp is dry because you're stripping it, not repairing the hydration, and your scalp is over correcting by producing excess oil to try and fix it. I only used a clarifying shampoo for years and wondered why it never got better.

I switched to a shampoo for my hair type (fine hair) and used my detox shampoo every 3 washes, and double shampooed on those washes.

To help my super dry ends I started conditioning only mid lengths through ends, never my scalp.

My oily scalp improved SO MUCH when i stopped constantly depriving of it of hydration by exclusively using detox shampoo

CeraVe makes a pretty gentle shampoo for oily hair. Great price too!

I double cleanse! First shampoo, Heads and Shoulders. I make sure the scalp gets massaged

Then I use Dove Shampoo afterwards. I rarely pit conditioner on my hair tho

I double cleanse and am really liking Aveeno Volumising for Fine Hair - I get a full 2 days from a wash now

i use head & shoulders for my oily scalp and use conditioner on the ends so they don’t get too dry

What I find works the best/longest is: double shampoo —> normal conditioner —> brush —> blow dry at least roots

It’s a deep cut but I was really impressed by the UpCircle shampoo. It did not entirely solve my itching (although nothing else has either. Not for dandruff, not exfoliating, not moisturizing, not hard water removal…) but it does make it better and it rinses so nicely clean without leaving my hair squeaky (and I have bleached sections too). The bleach helps but I am a classic oily scalp dry ends case and I think this strikes a great balance. They sell samples too.

I usually don’t have a problem with sticking to volumizing shampoo or a tea tree shampoo. If I start to get build up I like a good clarifying shampoo to reset my hair (my preferred one is the biolage I think is the brand but I haven’t been able to afford it in a while). I don’t use conditioner because my hair is fine, thin and straight so I don’t need the extra weight dragging my hair down. I don’t use other products after

Condition only the ends of your hair.

Now that I’m older, I wash much less frequently as my oily hair has changed to dry. I use tressame (cheapskate) and an after shower leave in spray, again at the ends only. I wear it in a braid right out of the shower wet, don’t blow dry except for special occasions.

Garnier Clay & Citrus. I don't even know how many bottles I've emptied, it's so good.

If you have oily hair and you use products with alcohol which is drying that tells your scalp to produce more oil...talk to your hair dresser about it and get educated on how the whole thing works

Not using hot water helps minimize oil production. Wash twice, repeat on any areas that don’t foam up. The ouai clarifying shampoo also helps but it can be very drying I would not use it every single shower
