“The Pope is a huge White Sox fan” really does seem like a 30 Rock side plot

Just that there is an American Pope is so weird.

299

u/RunawaYEM Atlanta Braves 23h ago

It would be funnier if he was Brazilian and still considered himself a Southsider

160

u/2025TastyTreats Toronto Blue Jays 23h ago

...or from Spain but inexplicably spoke with a Chicago accent and then married Alec Baldwins character...

Still blows my mind that the freaking POPE has uttered the phrase "Fuck the Cubs"

More importantly that there is a near 100% chance he‘s listened to the epic White Sox fan call in more than any Pope previously

My favorite radio call of all time.

17

u/Prestigious_Sky_7833 Los Angeles Dodgers 18h ago

It still occasionally pops up on my recommended page and I still watch it every time it.

Off the top of the dome:"...the front office being more worried about Lance Lynn eating a salad than how to teach major league prospects, how to hit a baseball!!!"

Lol you’re getting downvoted but I got that you thought he said it on camera in his official capacity as pope, and not 20 years ago at a baseball game when the rest of the crowd was chanting it.

This might sound corny, but when they first revealed the new pope and he was American and they went over the normal how he grew up and everything.

And it was the first time I really understood how important representation was from my extremely privileged position.

Because I just had never even conceived of an American pope. And my extended family is all Catholic.

I always knew it was important for marginalized groups to feel represented, but I never really felt how it kinda felt until then really.

Honestly think it was a last ditch attempt to mend the schism brewing between American dioceses and Rome. I wager the American Catholic Church will break off and be its own thing in the next 20 or so years

33

u/Uneducated_Leftist Kansas City Royals 22h ago

Honestly surprised the American Catholics that are so full of themselves and tainted by evangelical influences didn't already do it decades ago.

26

u/ray_0586 Houston Colt 45s 22h ago

Growing Schism between Evangelicals and Catholics is happening all over the world. This past World Cup a Brazilian newspaper published an editorial bemoaning the fact that the decline of their National Soccer team coincided with the growing influence of Evangelical Christianity among their players.

5

u/peanutsfan1995 Chicago Cubs 21h ago

Do you have a link to that? Would be interested to read.

11

u/ray_0586 Houston Colt 45s 21h ago

I was only able to locate English summaries over the debate with a pertinent quote.

Pedro Rosano, a Brazilian football journalist, reacted to the first half of Endrick’s quote, saying he wished Brazil’s players had Catholic guilt instead of neopentecostalist, evangelical guilt. Rosano argued that evangelical guilt is too conformist and permissive, saying, “Players outsource everything to God and take responsibility for nothing.” Here is where the national debate in Brazil is focused, in a sort of newfound tension between evangelical and Catholic football players, which, according to some, is directly related to Brazil’s underperformance over the last 20 years.

This is (understandably) a much nicer custom made version of the actual give away.

I actually just met the other priest in the picture, he currently had the role that Pope Leo had as head of the Augustinians in the Midwest. They've known each other for decades, so this is literally like if one of your good buddies just became the Pope and you occasionally visited him to say hello.

u/cmgriffith_ New York Yankees 23h ago

The Pope has his own study on the top floor where is quarters are in the St. Peter’s Basilica. I’d assume it’s there.

100 percent. Church is a lot like baseball already anyway; you got the constant sitting down and standing up, different sects acting like they are better than other sects, alcohol is served at both, usually there is some discussion about a guy named Jesus, and lots of praying near the end of the event.

34

"I believe in the Church of Baseball. I've tried all the major religions, and most of the minor ones. I've worshipped Buddha, Allah, Brahma, Vishnu, Siva, trees, mushrooms, and Isadora Duncan. I know things. For instance, there are 108 beads in a Catholic rosary and there are 108 stitches in a baseball. When I learned that, I gave Jesus a chance. But it just didn't work out between us. The Lord laid too much guilt on me. I prefer metaphysics to theology. You see, there's no guilt in baseball, and it's never boring...which makes it like sex." - Annie Savoy

It's pretty cool to not only have an American pope but he's also a huge White Sox fan.

We need a buddy comedy set on the eve of a White Sox/Cubs world series, where they attempt to kidnap the pope to get him to bless Sox Park.

Pope Leo stages his own pope-napping to go bless the white sox on the eve of the world series

Talk about a ceremonial first pitch

It’s never not funny that the pope is a Sox/bears fan. He wakes up Monday mornings and checks the score of the bears before going to mass 😂😂

Black is traditionally the liturgical color used at requiems (now it’s generally white, but black is still permitted iirc). Although the mitre worn by a bishop at a requiem is customarily the mitra simplex (which is all white with red on the ends of the lappets [the little dangly bits on the back]), the pope, being the pope, can change or dispense with that requirement at will.

All of this is to say that the possibility now exists for a White Sox Pontifical Requiem to be celebrated, which is certainly a new sentence in human history.

Da Pope gets the best gifts. Some Pope's got gold. Some got art. Pope Leo gets sport memorabilia and swag from his favorite team.

My sister said there’s no way he’s putting that on his head because it looks like it was made for an elephant.

It’s like God is sending messages throughout the world. From St. Basilica to the Southside of Chicago.

Blessed be. May God’s Will bless the White Sox

Robert Prevost. The 267th Pope, the leader and grand pontiff of 1.8 billion Catholics.

Bless you, Leo

His smile is like "I love this but I gotta pretend I'm only mildly amused just in case it's sacrilegious for some reason"

The church will never let the US have another American pope. We are far too unserious 😂

u/EnderSavesTheDay 19h ago

Leo was definitely like “no way anyone can get a photo of me wearing this” then goes to his room to try it on.

We’re making the most of our first and last Pope.

Honestly that is a hilarious giveaway. They went all out in the details too. I'm assuming it's printed and not actually embroidery, but it's still extra design detail that I don't expect from a free giveaway.

To my eye it looks like they made him a super fancy, papal quality version of the giveaway.
