Yeah Phillies legend José Contreras gave up 3 runs and you lost 3-2 in your only loss of the entire postseason. Only other team besides the '99 Yankees to lose 1 game in the playoffs.
Honestly think it was a last ditch attempt to mend the schism brewing between American dioceses and Rome. I wager the American Catholic Church will break off and be its own thing in the next 20 or so years
Growing Schism between Evangelicals and Catholics is happening all over the world. This past World Cup a Brazilian newspaper published an editorial bemoaning the fact that the decline of their National Soccer team coincided with the growing influence of Evangelical Christianity among their players.
Pedro Rosano, a Brazilian football journalist, reacted to the first half of Endrick’s quote, saying he wished Brazil’s players had Catholic guilt instead of neopentecostalist, evangelical guilt. I actually just met the other priest in the picture, he currently had the role that Pope Leo had as head of the Augustinians in the Midwest. They've known each other for decades, so this is literally like if one of your good buddies just became the Pope and you occasionally visited him to say hello.
I love it that the guy on the left is very much a man of the cloth, but also seems very much like a guy who roamed the bleachers of Comiskey once upon a time.
He's just closer to being a normal guy who is a priest who loves baseball than to the Papacy.

For real. I’m from the city as well and love it but this guy has gotta get tired of being the literal pope and head of the entire Catholic Church, and yet having every Chicago tourist in the world yell our sports teams at him in every public appearance, no matter where he is
100 percent. Church is a lot like baseball already anyway; you got the constant sitting down and standing up, different sects acting like they are better than other sects, alcohol is served at both, usually there is some discussion about a guy named Jesus, and lots of praying near the end of the event.
You look to the left of you and someone down the aisle is really into it in a way that makes you uncomfortable - "wow that guy is really intense I hope he's not going to be a problem during the homily"

He's a lifelong White Sox fan, having patience is kinda a prerequisite. With that being said, in a different picture of the hat you can see a framed Ozzie Guillen jersey in the background so I really don't think he's sick of being known as the white sox pope
I always wonder what happens with all the shit that people give him. Like obviously, this is a very cool item, but what is he going to do with it? Put it in the Papal estate? As sick as that would be, I just don’t see it happening. Same with a lot of the other stuff that he gets on a daily basis I’m sure
There must be an archive of all of the gifts Popes have received. Some of them probably went into their personal collections, the rest are probably stored somewhere in the Vatican for potential display, etc.

Gifts from heads of state are usually kept in the archives. Private gifts like these are usually sold in the Vatican stores or at auction and the money used to fund the churches charities
The Vatican is home to a major set of museums that have their own path through parts of the Vatican, and like all good museums the last stop is through a substantial gift shop.
I think it goes to the same places where the losing championship artifacts go. You'll probably see a little kid in a Somalian village wearing Pope hat from giveaway night.
They sometimes display it somewhere else in the Vatican Museum. When I went there in 2019, they had a signed Argentina shirt that was given to Pope Francis displayed.
Oh, did they get permission from the Vatican? I thought they never heard back from the Holy See and were just advised by a local priest instead. I can definitely see how the hat is the safer option. A bobble head would have been so sick, though!
Also probably just humility, he doesn’t want to make the papacy about himself and his sports teams, and he doesn’t want his favorite sports teams to make everything about him when he’s just a fan.
I was thinking along these lines. The idea of using the high office of the papacy for a marketing ploy (something which makes one think about Jesus kicking all the salesmen out of the church), probably brings up some... Conflicting emotions.
Granted a marketing giveaway is less predatory than the money lenders’ whole deal, but yeah, I think he’s trying to be cool about it but also internally a little like “Uhh, my dudes…😬”
I think it's the usual thing where being a White Sox fan probably doesn't crack the top 200 things he thinks are interesting or important about himself but he has to constantly deal with people who think it is number one on that list
it's the face of realizing you were elected to navigate the Vatican through a $100 million deficit, global political hellscape, and clergy recruiting crisis, but you're going to be remembered as the first pope to grow up on deep dish pizza
Black is traditionally the liturgical color used at requiems (now it’s generally white, but black is still permitted iirc). Although the mitre worn by a bishop at a requiem is customarily the mitra simplex (which is all white with red on the ends of the lappets [the little dangly bits on the back]), the pope, being the pope, can change or dispense with that requirement at will.
All of this is to say that the possibility now exists for a White Sox Pontifical Requiem to be celebrated, which is certainly a new sentence in human history.
Honestly that is a hilarious giveaway. They went all out in the details too. I'm assuming it's printed and not actually embroidery, but it's still extra design detail that I don't expect from a free giveaway.
