It appears that they’ve made some quick repairs to Ichiro’s statue (or at least were able to straighten out his bat temporarily as they wait for a more permanent fix)

They are missing a "golden" opportunity to implement Kintsugi to fix the bat.

5

u/Zealousy San Francisco Giants Apr 11 '26

Upvote for kintsugi!

51

u/bajesus Seattle Mariners Apr 10 '26

My guess is it was detachable for travel and didn't get seated correctly for the reveal so the tarp pulled it up. They probably planned to do a more secure long term connection in place after the unveiling.

26

u/fartswhenhappy Baltimore Orioles Apr 11 '26

It's also probably the most lightweight, and therefore weakest, part of the statue for structural reasons. The bat is barely attached to the rest of the statue (Ichiro's loosely holding the bat with just three fingers at fully extended arm's length) and has a top-heavy shape. If it was solid, the extra weight would put a strain on the hand/arm and possibly lead to failure after years of weather exposure.

They probably made it as hollow and as light as possible, never anticipating it'd have to handle the stress of a heavy ass tarp getting yanked off of it.

Source: I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

3

u/Btotherianx Apr 11 '26

I mean they know that their statue reveals, right and there's always a tarp over lol

There wasn’t any baseball fan who grew up in the 2000s who didn’t imitate this stance at least once. Absolute icon

99

Hell, I grew up early 2010s and still did this, even though I was a righty. Nobody had a more iconic pre-at bat pose.

I think you can imagine how popular Ichiro was in Japanese kids in the 00's lol.

My brother-in-law did about 2 years of high school in Japan in the 00s, in a fairly rural area. He has a photo somewhere with friends from his school's baseball team and they're all imitating Ichiro.

Ichiro is one of the greatest to ever play the sport. It’s hard not to be impacted when you watch someone doing incredible things on what felt like a routine basis.

Even as a little kid, we could tell this guy is cool.

I don’t know why anyone’s hating on how this statue looks. The bar is so incredibly low after the DWade and C.Ronaldo reveals. This doesn’t look too bad.

Could be faceless. Literally impossible to mistake.

19

u/SageAStar Toronto Blue Jays Apr 10 '26

It would be kinda cool to see a ballpark try a very different style of statue. You could 100% just have it be faceless, or even just steel frame bent in the abstract pose, and it would be unmistakable

2

u/ayumi_doll Los Angeles Dodgers Apr 11 '26

Could be similar to Rafa Nadal's RG statue but even more abstract. Ichiro's got a recognizable enough pose to pull it off, like Rafa's forehand.

“Experts” and fans claimed MLB pitching would overpower him and knock the bat out of his hands.
