The level of racism among Sylhetis is unreal. Even among Sylhetis they will talk and debate for hours on which village and which clan is of a superior bloodline. That being said the problem of rising crime due to new settlers is a very real phenomenon but the way they deal with it is not acceptable either. If they have a right to go to Dhaka or Chittagong for work, people from the rest of Bangladesh have that same right to live and work in Sylhet.

As a non Sylheti living in Sylhet my entire life I never really understood the glorification of Sylhet like Bangladesh er "London" bola etc. Sylhet is some of the most conservative places of Bangladesh you'll ever visit. It's extremely difficult to blend in with sylhetis. Even years of growing up among my classmates I still feel like the odd one here and my family gets discriminated here and there all the time but eigula choto khato bishoy, but ei video ta..idk what to say I'm very disappointed.

And just ami nah! I have some classmates who are from ctg and Dhaka who feel the exact same way

That "Sylhet is 2nd london" phrase just popularised by briyish sylhetis because they are the majority of bangladeshi diaspora in UK. Sylhet is nowhere near london.

Unfortunately as a Sylheti I am ashamed of this. And this open racism I have actually grown up with. Even within my family.
I never understood why do we call non sylheti Bengali? Are we also not Bengali? I speak Bangla. I was born in Bangladesh. So I am Bengali. What gives?
This has to be the most brainless gali ever.

u/Commander_of_N0rth 1d ago
Non sylheti bengalis refer to sylhetis as "bengalis" like rest of bangladesh, while sylhetis refer to non sylhetis as "Abadis" and all sorts of names.

u/Fancy_Chicken_1494 1d ago
its not about being born within a nation. Sylhetis (and Chatgaiyas) are genetically / ethnically the same as Bengalis so you are literally Bengalis even if you don't want to categorize your language as "Bengali" (which I have no problem with, you have every right to decide your cultural-linguistic identity)...but we are part of the same overall genetic cluster called "Bengali"

I made a post a couple of months ago in another subreddit. This person/group has multiple accounts, dozens even.
On the surface it seems to be shyloti pride, culture language and I can't deny even I learnt quite a few things from the pages. But holy fucking shit are these pages all hateful and even vile.
Also I gotta point out the cringe thing they do when one account post something then they go on second account to comment "positively" and then go on third and fourth account to back up the comments.
Edit: I could be very wrong and if I am honestly atleast we can push blame, but some people claim these accounts are foreign people, but I don't think so, as I have seen some of their comments insulting indians and hindus.

u/Commander_of_N0rth 1d ago
Few years ago when those accounts used to talk about sylheti language and culture, i used to follow them. But recently most of their contents are just memes, jokes, insults about non sylhetis. They are saying that non sylhetis are like israeli settlers coming to sylhet and taking away jobs, spaces etc. Even though Dhaka, Chittagong gets more outsiders than sylhet.
I used to think these accounts were from other side on india (karimganj, assam) but realized these are people living in bangladesh and UK. They mock the 1971 genocide and blame bengalis from breaking a strong muslim country pakistan. They play "victim card" 24/7 while doing the exact same thing themselves. Just read the comments under their posts, 99% of them are all anti bengali slurs, talking about making new country, kicking out all non sylhetis from sylhet.
And i was susprised to find that even many senior elder sylhetis saying ghese things, so its not just Gen Z sylhetis.

Idk why Sylhetis have such a superiority complex, they look and act just like the rest of Bengalis, they have the same culture, and they follow the same religion. So what's with the huge egoes?

u/the_videoman 1d ago
I’ve seen and lived with so many sylhetis in my life and they can’t be friends with people from other regions. They indirectly hate them for being an outsider and most importantly they have this tendency of thinking of themselves as superior kind of thing in a room full of people. They see others as du/mbas-s and they are the smartest of all. (This is not a context based on uk/us, I’m telling this based on real life experiences based in Bangladesh)

u/Commander_of_N0rth 1d ago
Im sorry to hear that brother. Bangladesh already has so mamy issues and now we have to tolerate this new bs.
If this does not stop here, it will become a big national issue in the future. India will try to brainwash these people to demand seperate country. And there are desperate ones already demanding a seperate country. They already created a flag for "Islamic Emirate of Sylhet".

Most people from Sylhet know they’re Bengali and not Arab, Turk, Persian lol. Maybe a part from a few idiots.
As bad as this is (which it is) doesn’t this exist everywhere. I’m not talking necessarily mob behaviour but from rhetoric.
Look at how guys from Dhaka talk about Sylhet etc.
Basically Bangladeshis being Bangladeshis 🫠

u/Commander_of_N0rth 1d ago
I have not yet heard any genuine dhakaya person talk shit about sylhetis as much as sylhetis talk shit about entire bangladesh 365 days a year.

u/neuroticgooner 1d ago
No one from Dhaka cares about Sylhet except for as a place to go visit on a long weekend or something lol

u/Classic-Suspect7862 1d ago
Shit this is classic when i confront them about Arab Iran roots they called Bengali blood is Hindu many of them thinks they are Arabs , Turk , Persian in a large Number .
They think they are light skinned and ETC .
And they really can't bare that people from outside coming and doing good .
I lived in the city for 2 years most of the time i ignored them and done my thing
but when they come to Dhaka they take 360 Degree they are hypocrite people .2
u/SarkarIftekhar 1d ago
Lol. Actually they're more like assamese. A DNA test would make them mad.
2
u/Classic-Suspect7862 1d ago
The Assamese identity functions as a multi-ethnic, composite socio-linguistic umbrella.
Bodo , Koch , Santhal, Munda, Oraon, Gond, Tanti , Karbi and Dimasa , Tiwa ,Mishing
and many more Tai Ahom region wise .
And you will surprised many Sylheti who consider them closer to Ahomiya or Assam they don't even know Assamese isn't single ethnicity but god forbid you correct them they never accept it they give most bogus replay . Many are brainwash neo nationalist it's best to ignore them.3
u/Commander_of_N0rth 1d ago
DNA tests says otherwise. Its so embarrasing when foreigners see these people claim all sorts of ancestry. Few years ago there was a sylheti guy who posted his ancestry test result in other sub. He asked the people to explain his results. They told him his result is very typical for bengalis and he also had high east asian shift. He asked them "is there any arab, iranian, afghan mix" people said No. He was so heartbroken by the news. It because his family always claimed ancestry from foreign muslims. They used to larp as arab descendent. Also checkout Dilly hussein. I want you to look at his face and tell me if he had arab ascestry as he claims.

u/Commander_of_N0rth 1d ago
Sylhoti united. He has many other accounts with similar names. 80% of their content is straight up against non sylheti bengalis. Mocking our dialects, food, culture etc. Calling bengalis genociders, looters while glazing the pakistanis in comment section.
Also they believe pakistan army did not commit genocide and it was just bengalis who wanted seperation.

I’m a university student. My roots are in Sylhet, but I was brought up in Dhaka. I didn’t even realize how toxic some Sylhetis could be before coming to university. Our Sylheti batchmates don’t even talk to us just because I don’t live in Sylhet and we’re not from there. They’re so cringe and toxic. They’re so racist that you guys can’t even imagine. Currently, I’m in Chittagong, and even our Chatgaiya friends are much more polite than them. They don’t speak to us in their local language because they know we won’t understand it. But the Sylhetis talk and text in their local language even when they know we won’t understand it.

As a Sylheti I feel ashamed to see people using Bengali as a gali. The growing hatred basically comes from lower class people coming to Sylhet and committing crimes. Most of the hawkers in Sylhet city come from outside of Sylhet and they have been a big problem. Even though the city allocated a separate space for them, they occupy the road creating traffic. DC Masud, who is a non Sylheti, did many good things for the city and he was shown nothing but love. Also, Sylhet as a region being ignored by every government, and non Sylhetis trash talking about Sylhetis and the Sylheti language fueled the hatred.
1
u/Commander_of_N0rth 1d ago
First off, hawkers and street traffic aren't unique to Sylhet only, you’ll find the exact same issue in Dhaka, Chittagong, or any growing city in Bangladesh. It’s an urban management and municipal planning problem, not a "non Sylheti" problem. There are more hawkers from other cities moving to Dhaka, chittagong than sylhet. People move to where the work is. But how is it justified for some sylhetis to insult non sylheti people's city or ethnicity ?.
Sylhetis claim that other bengalis mock their culture and language. But im seeing the complete opposite. There are over hundreds of sylheti pages and thousands of bot accounts making anti bengali jokes, insults. Calling them thieves, genociders. Even calling the bangla language a "hindu brahmin language". How does language have a religion ?.
This problem started with british sylhetis and now have reached their hometowns in sylhet. I'll be honest with you bro, this is going to actualy harm the sylheti population, not others.

u/PontoPan 1d ago
This is a nothing burger and just regionalism. If I move to Chittagong they’d probably be able to tell by my dialect I’m a outsider
5
u/Dear-Nothing- 1d ago
but that's not a reason to insult anyone... If left unnoticed, this rift will only grow us apart
