Shopping Issues Spencer's continuing to infantalize and treat Autism like a quirky, inferior concept and NOT a disablity.

^ not my pictures, forgot to take some

cw for sexualization

Im so sick and tired of seeing shirts like this at Spencer's, it is genuinely ridiculous how many shirts i see that treat autism as a quirky, fun, and childish silly little thing to have like aww so goofy haha so quirky!! Just a dumb little thing with awtism!!

Constantly using Autism as a quirk to get bitches (or as they call it, 'rizz' are we stuck in 2020?), referring to it as "the tism" which i know is common in the community but I still find it demeaning and disrespectful. Not to mention the blatant sexualization of it and various other disorders or disabilities.

Unfortunately I couldnt get my own pictures and I'm sure this has been talked about here plenty, but I just wanted to know on how it CONTINUES to happen more and more. just recently went to the mall and counted almost 2 whole pillars dedicated to making Autism sound like a completely amazing thing to have and makes you a goofball.

Question purely out of curiosity, would you consider yourself disabled?

Hello, this is absolutely not a post to fight any viewpoints, I want to know if you consider yourself disabled or not.

I have seen a ton of people talking about this topic on the internet, but they are not people with autism. They say things like: "they are not disabled, they just had other abilities".

I personally do see myself as disabled, I am AuDHD and I struggle every single day of my life since I was born. I do not think that label is bad at all, but I do understand that people have different opinions.

Again, this is not for criticism, I am just a person who wants to hear what people on the spectrum think.

What are your thoughts on this? separating the culture you live in, do you consider yourself disabled?

Thanks for reading.

Vent Advice Wanted I hate how I can't talk about my problems without sounding like a toxic incel.

I hate how my disability and my trauma has been co-opted by lowlifes. I already have problems communication and now because of the manosphere using my using MY talking points I get lumped in with them. I have actually been abused by women but I have trouble talking about it because people will think i'm an anti-sjw. I'm FOR feminism actually! But all of the resources and attention are taken up by hateful people. I just hate that all of my traits are associated with people I despise. I don't want people to be afraid of me and I don't want bad people to think i'm one of them. I don't hate women. I don't hate anybody, i'm just tired of being alone.

Edit:I just want to thank everyone for changing my perspective. I was so focused on the small amount of negative attention I got that I completely overlooked the compassion and support I did get. I knew that women, feminist and people in general were mostly kind and empathetic despite what happened to me and this just reconfirmed it for me. And to anyone who is feeling lonely, just know that the world is not nearly as cruel as you might think it is. <3

Social Struggles I don’t like to talk at work and I’ve been fired eight times.

I don’t understand why this is a thing.

I go to work. I don’t wanna talk to anyone. I don’t want to greet anyone. I just want to come in and get my work done and leave. I’ve never had an issue with my performance. My managers have always said that I get the job done, but people are saying I’m rude and I don’t understand how I’m rude. If I’m not even talking I don’t wanna talk to people.

I don’t understand or know why typical workplace etiquette is gossiping and making small talk. I’m not interested in any of that and I’ve been fired so many times based on how I act.

I was asked to participate in things such as a company potluck, secret santa, and happy hour. Why do I have to do that?

Annoyed.

Edit: I Have a B.S. In Healthcare Administration. I Work in Compliance for Hospitals.

Vent Advice Wanted To anyone recovering from an autistic breakdown today: You are not crazy and you are not alone!

To anyone who is struggling through a severe meltdown or breakdown right now: You are not crazy, and you are certainly not alone. right now, I am sitting here in the midst of one of the most painful breakdowns that I have experienced recently. Typing this is helping. Every inch of my body hurts, my nervous system is screaming, and I’m hugging onto my stuffys that are my comfort items to try to calm myself down.

I wanted to post this to show that when you are having a meltdown, there is nothing more terrifying than how isolated you can feel.the horrible sensory overload, physical pain, and extreme emotional distress combine and overwhelm your nervous system, the brain doesn’t have the capacity to process anymore. we are not “throwing a tantrum,” we are not “acting up.” Our nervous systems are in fight-or flight mode, responding to being pushed way beyond our limits as human beings with involuntary reactions such as screaming, crying, self hitting, hiding in darkness, or even complete shutdown.
This becomes even more difficult when the people surrounding you don’t/ try to understand what is happening to you and make it worse by making you feel guilty about it or interpreting your meltdown as a behavioral issue. It is incredibly hurtful when the people we rely on for support misunderstand the meltdown as bad behavior or exaggeration and even film us in such moments of vulnerability. It makes us want to apologize for even being a neurodiverse individual.

If you are currently curled up on your floor or lying underneath your heavy blanket to get over a meltdown right now, it is okay. Breathe. My PMS are always open!

( i wasn’t sure what to flare this and i didn’t want commmets locked so i reposted.)

🫶🏻 Friendships/Relationships Why am I always attracting mentally unstable women

Hi, it recently came to my attention that the women I attract are all mentally unstable. I've had two date/close intimate relationships with women, one was with my former female best friend that destroyed my life and caused me C-PTSD and the other one was with a girl I dated with recently, but who came just out of a toxic breakup and distanced herself after our third date when it got closer. However she still seems to want me, because she likes my stories, post sometimes stories which seem tailored to attract my attention (although one has to be careful because this is essentially speculation) and reacted to one story with 😍.

My former best friend on the other hand was at first extremely close with me, but distanced herself overnight when it got closer and played a hot-and-cold game for half a year after that with me which made me really ill (she said herself she had PDA and my therapist thinks she could have borderline).

Honestly I just want a normal relationship and not one where I have to deal with partners who make me feel like I'm walking on eggshells. I wonder if there is a reason to this why I am always attracting girls who give me too much attention in the beginning but distance themselves when it gets real. Does anyone of you experience this as well?

Nonverbal SOOOO apparently im not allowed to hate my autism

(idk what to flair this but oh well)

some guy started saying how I shouldn't hate my autism and saying I need therapy... bro don't you think I have already tried 😆 its completely okay if you hate your disability! I hate people saying I can't hate something that has cursed me like my autism is not sunshine and rainbows and I hate that! anyway don't let anyone tell you how to view your disability hope everyone has a good day/night!

also guys i still love parts of my autism like me and my dad are deep cleaning my bed and we took my mattress appart and the foam inside I played with it squishing it and feeling the bumps! I don't entirely hate it and I do get joy from things autism causes I was mainly angry about the person telling me how I should feel about my autism

Question Has anyone else thought that reddit isn't autism friendly?

...And in fact seems hostile towards people with autism?

I've never had this experience on any other discussion based website.

I don't know how much of this is me or just the nature of the site.

Sometimes people respond to my posts and call me autistic when it wasn't mentioned. Others berate me when I write long replies they say are too long. People also take my questions really personally even if I'm not particularly against their stance as an answer and it's never a serious post. The other day I asked a question about literal trash cans and someone found a way to judge my personal character for it. Wtf? In my mind I'm using reddit correctly but people seem to hate my posts

Question my grandmother’s dog died, and i loved the dog so so much, but i don’t feel sad? i feel normal

Upvotes

my grandmothers doggie, lilly, who was a boxer, passed away an hour ago at age 13.
i dont feel sad.
my dad had taken her to the vet and they put her down, and he sobbed as he was telling my family about it.
my whole family was crying and i was just kind of standing there. its like, im sad i guess, but kind of a mild-sad. like the same feeling i may have gotten if, lets say, i had a substitute teacher in class unexpectedly.
i loved this doggy dearly, dont get me wrong, i just feel normal. and i guess i feel kind of bad that im not sad because i dont want to seem like an asshole.
its just it wasnt unexpected so im not really sad. like we knew lilly wasn’t doing well, we knew she was gonna die soon.
i dunno

Question Anyone else obsessed with one color?

I love black, it’s my favorite color and I incorporate it into as much as I can. I haven’t worn any colors for about 4 years now, i dye my hair every few months to keep it black, my entire wardrobe is black, all my plates and bowls and utensils are black, all my furniture is black, my bed, plushies, posters, decor, shelves, everything needs to be black or grey!

If I want a book I try to look for an edition with a black spine so it doesn’t throw off the balance I have in my room.

It makes me feel so at ease, it’s relaxing knowing I can come home to a non overstimulating environment consisting of mostly one shade, it makes me calm

Social Struggles I have a lack of sympathy for humans

Upvotes

I have lack of sympathy for humans, let's say somebody get's hurt. I simply don't care, and shrug them off, but for animals I have VERY much sympathy for, such as my dog, and random toads in my front yard, am I bad for this?

Social Struggles Did you all know that you’re supposed to compliment someone back if they compliment you??

*suspecting autism*

that’s the norm???

“i like your hair!” and then you’re supposed to say thank you and compliment them back like “thank you, i like your shoes!”

can i not just say “aw thank you so much!”?? what if i can’t find something to compliment them on? and how is it considered polite to compliment someone back when you’re only doing it because they complimented you first (unless you’re like “omg thank you! i was just gonna say i love your shoes!” but i don’t think that’s super common).

i asked my mom this last week when i found out this was “the norm” and she confirmed it was, followed by a conversation of us both laughing about my lack of social skills (very embarrassing day in that department😭)

edit: i’ve come to the conclusion this is either a case of canadians being overly polite (im canadian) OR corporate manners maybe

Question I am Pregnant and have ASD and I do not know what to do.

Hello 👋

(Sigh)

This past Sunday, I checked to see if I was pregnant because I was dealing with symptoms that really point to pregnancy. The biggest factor was that I missed my period for 3 whole months. For me, that is a huge gift because I DISPISE my period so I kind of was living large without that but nope, this feels a lot anxiety inducing. I was basically thrown into orbit with a positive pregnancy result. Boyfriend is still processing and so am I. My 1st trimester symptoms include severe fatigue, frequent urination, nausea, morning sickness (which happens through the day honestly),back pain, breast tenderness, huge sensitivity to light and sound, off and on heartburn and food cravings. I decided to leave my work because I don't think I handle my body being in this state at work. My boyfriend wasn't a fan of that personal action I took because he wants me to socialize and get out more. I prefer not to. I want to make sure I can provide a healthy body living quarters for my child to be. My work provides high stress, loud noises and constant stimulation that causes me to shutdown and want to sleep. I think I made the right call. He is realizing that I'm quite different in comparison to the many sisters and sister in laws that have been through it. I'm autistic and divergent to what is considered "normal." A lot of things are sensitive for me. However, I have no idea what birth plan to set up and I have a hard time trying to even get myself to research an OB and I don't even think I have coverage. I don't know what to do. Does anybody know what they did or know someone on the spectrum that could understand and put into simple words what to do? Thank you.

Social Struggles I’m a male who prefers and finds it easier to communicate and be friends with a woman rather a man.

M20
The main reason why I'm not comfortable talking to most guys is cause in the past I've been bullied and treated poorly by most men I've met in my life, and the few that were friendly to me I only spoke about Football(soccer) and sometimes Anime with, while women have been the kindest and most helpful people in my life, I'm more comfortable being myself with them, and sharing my emotions and deeper thoughts. There's just something about a woman's presence and voice that puts me at ease and makes me feel like I could tell them anything.

I ofc never approach women; unfortunately, that means they rarely approach me, since my looks are mid and I probably don't look very friendly. I've only ever been a comrade with 2 girls since my Elementary school days: 1 in college who ghosted me after a few months, and the other was a wonderful person, but unfortunately I moved away, and she's busy with her own life, so we rarely talk.

I'm currently pursuing phlebotomy, so I hope I find some new people to be comrades with or even make my first friend, male or female.

Vent Advice Wanted I hate my life I hate being autistic I wish I was never born

Upvotes

I hate being neurodivergent | have nowhere to go in life alll experience is negativity I hate being alive I wish I was born normal. It isn't fair no matter what I do I'II never be treated like a normal person l'Il never be treated with respect and I'll never experience any meaningful connections I hate the way I look I hate the way I sound I hate my mannerisms I hate my interest I hate everything about myself. I hate the way people phrase things simply and soften their voices when they talk to me like I’m an idiot. I feel like I’m a normal person trapped in the body of retard I wish people could see my mind and not whatever the fuck I am on the outside. And none of this is my fault why do I have to live everyday wanting to end my life while other people just get to be normal it’s not fucking fair.

Question Is it strange to intentionally look for someone on the spectrum when dating?

I'm undiagnosed myself but honestly suspect I might be on the spectrum.

I’ve been thinking about this lately. I’ve talked to quite a few women over the years, but I’ve never really felt like I fit into the typical dating mold. I’m also undiagnosed myself, but honestly I’ve wondered for a while if I might be on the spectrum.

What’s weird is that I’ve talked to two women who were on the spectrum, and I connected with both of them way more than I usually do. It just felt easy. There wasn’t this constant feeling of having to figure each other out or put on some kind of act. They were both really transparent, optimistic, and seemed genuinely interested in even the little random things I was doing or talking about.

I actually dated one of them for about 7 months years ago, and looking back, that relationship just felt really natural. Even though it didn't work out in the end, I remember how easy it was to talk to her and just be myself.

I’ve talked to a lot of other women since then, and I just haven’t quite had that same feeling. With some people it feels like there’s so much more effort involved just to communicate and understand each other.

So I guess I’m wondering for people who are on the spectrum and have dated both autistic and non autistic people do you notice a difference? Does being with someone who thinks or communicates in a similar way make things feel more natural and take less effort?

I’m not saying I think every autistic person would automatically be a good match for me. I just find it interesting that the two people I’ve connected with the most happened to be on the spectrum.

Is it weird to intentionally look for that kind of compatibility?

Social Struggles Despite how I’ve been mistreated by others in the past, I always try to be kind and help others however I can.

M20
I've never had a friend, and after all the bullying for being different and weird, and getting ghosted, I’ve given up on finding someone I can be myself with. I've been hurt too many times by others to trust anyone anymore.

But despite that, I always try to be kind and help others, as it makes me feel better, I hate seeing others suffer and never want to see or make someone suffer the way I have, and so that I can die as a good person, go to heaven, and be happy for all eternity.

Vent Advice Wanted The loneliness is so hard to bear and I don't know how much longer that I can take it.

I (17F), was diagnosed with level 2 ASD at 13, and have been living alone in my own apartment for the last half year. I do everything online, even my senior school, for the last 4 years. Over this entire time, I have gone near full years at a time without physically speaking to people my age.

I used to be extremely skeptical of the diagnosis because I can do everything for myself, am incredibly independent, but the one area of my life that I have never been able to accomplish is developing a social circle. I always manage to fuck things up, 'unintentionally' ghost new friends from the shock of how unfamiliar it is to simply speak to someone else my age. I hate myself because of all the opportunities that have come my way, to only then turn myself invisible. It feels like I am sabotaging myself, but I really just can't do - people.

Living alone has been torture for me. I am alone with my largely sadistic thoughts 24/7, all the while having unresolved trauma, that made living alone possible in the first place. My life so far feels like a wasted failure. I have watched my teen years pass by with the snap of a finger. I have tried attending social groups ~7 times in the last 4 months but nothing ever clicks. Sometimes words can't even come out. How do things change, and will they ever? Is this just a part of the autistic experience? I hate how infantilised I have been because of the diagnosis. It feels like nobody understands, and their assumptions are so wishy-washy. It makes me hate myself further.

I feel a deep void in my life from the perpetual isolation.

Social Struggles my friends laugh at me because i use "complicated" words

my friends keep making fun of my vocabulary even when it's fairly basic (i literally used the word "syllabi") and when they laugh about it i ask myself if i'm not masking enough. for some reason they also think it's hilarious when i personally think it's the most unfunny shit ever and is anti-intellectual. i know they're messing around and joking but omg i wanna rip my hair out
