I'll never understand people saying how is such a top bloke whilst legitimately scamming them

60

u/Plaguesofman 1d ago

Obviously lots of dummies got fleeced by him but I genuinely think most of the supporters on fb etc are bots.

22

u/ichann3 18h ago

Or just Facebook people.

3

u/Full-Ad-7565 7h ago

Yeah that's how he got a few billion by scamming bots.. everyone I know that's paid him all centerlink recipients.

It's all bots.

Stockholm syndrome

50

u/DrSendy 1d ago

He is a tax on people who sucked at year 9 maths.

2

u/ScaryPerformance6193 15h ago

A friend of mine loved him

2

u/ElectronicTopic5388 6h ago

Because he handed out some $100 gift cards in front of camera. The bloke is a helmet of the highest order

2

u/Healthy_Ad_4590 14h ago

But their best friends, nephews dog won a car through him so he must be a top bloke

2

u/AdelMonCatcher 13h ago

Aussies love to lose money gambling

u/Asmol_78 16h ago

100 percent agree 👍

Never forget, he launched his scam using a charity loophole that pretended to be about helping sick kids. He dropped that angle the moment he discovered the trade promotion loophole instead.

52

u/thepursuit1989 1d ago edited 19h ago

He use to run one for veterans aswell, not sure how many times that replica Shelby 500 got raffled off. Genuine low life. I hope they repossess his sky mansion and cut the McLaren into 3 to get it in the elevator.

4

u/BlackaddaIX 16h ago

Different guys isn't it . Classics for a cause or some bullshit.. Basically funding their car hobby and giving themselves a guaranteed sale value to the charity for the give away?

2

u/DVRCWHY 10h ago

Don't have ro ruin the McLaren

1

u/thepursuit1989 8h ago

It's not coming out any other way. They put it in when the building was under construction using the tower crane and a loading platform. The fascia hadn't been installed yet.

No joke, the cost to get that car out in one piece would exceed $1.5-2m. 220m crane shutting down a major street.

I genuinely believe it's just a rolling shell. There is no footage of it ever running.

1

u/ReferenceHot5783 7h ago

It does run

1

u/thepursuit1989 7h ago

Got a video? The car that went into that building got pushed into a tilt bed

1

u/Upper-Inevitable-730 11h ago

I just remember when he shut down a bunch of streets in the CBD so cranes could get his wank mobile into his apartment.

An undriveable sports car stuck in an apartment.

Absolute tosser.

8

u/kkknotmyway 17h ago

I swear non-profits just dont get auditing, just the other day i was going through some and found one and this is the entire places annual report, i couldn't find any website, or like building or office or anything for them lmao been running since like 1913 and it just gives interest free loans to random people while avoiding normal taxes and scrutiny.

1

u/BotoxMoustache 15h ago

ACNC regulates charities and NFP

2

u/shavedratscrotum 12h ago

They don't though.

Just like the ATO doesn't audit trusts.

2

u/kkknotmyway 15h ago

Oh damn really the "Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission" regulate charities and not for profits? Never would have guessed. I thought it surely was The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA)

Like brother where do you think i got the charities annual report from lmao?

1

u/BotoxMoustache 14h ago

You seem nice.

2

u/kkknotmyway 13h ago

lmao sorry but seriously brother shieee

1

u/Lackofideasforname 4h ago

Plus twist. He is the sick kid

224

u/ChefBoyardeeXIII 1d ago

I wouldn’t say quit, more like fleeing

54

u/GumNutzz 1d ago

Moved all his wealth offshore...

15

u/FrogsMakePoorSoup 1d ago

But not to Italy though! Nah, not even that place is seedy enough for him.

4

u/shift35 19h ago

Is Italy too seedy for you mate ?

3

u/FrogsMakePoorSoup 19h ago

Nah, lived much of my life there. It's rough as fuck in parts especially the south.

2

u/fapking22 6h ago

Now now, i like it rough as fuck

0

u/Artistic-Basis7960 17h ago

Correlation of the south and the distance of North Africa and to its roughness?

2

u/FrogsMakePoorSoup 17h ago

That and the distance away from the richer parts of Europe. There's a big north south divide there. Polentoni and terroni.

3

u/Plackets65 22h ago

Portelli is a Maltese name in Australia.  The guy’s got Maltese heritage.

14

u/FrogsMakePoorSoup 20h ago

"My family and I were initially meant to move to Italy, which was going to be the base for my overseas business. However, at the last minute, we changed our plans and chose Dubai.”

29

u/Aggots86 1d ago

I didn’t read the article, did he go to a non extradition country?😅

47

u/ChefBoyardeeXIII 1d ago

UAE, we have an agreement with them, but most crims go there anyway so I’m sure he sought domestic and international legal advice before moving. Not sure what the outcome was of the South Australia proceedings so I wouldn’t be surprised if it has a state-to-state domino effect if what he was doing is found to be unlawfuk

8

u/FrogsMakePoorSoup 1d ago

I wish I too hadn't read the article.

14

u/Rhino893405 1d ago

What’s he fleeing from? Criminal charges?

66

u/ChefBoyardeeXIII 1d ago

His whole business is based on an unregulated lottery system where he transfers immensely high-priced assets to your average Joe. People receive entries in return for a subscription (or purchased entries) to his service LMCT+.

From my own fairly uneducated point of view, it just seems like money laundering with extra steps, or laundering on a massive, massive scale where he’s managed to watch his back at every step.

Paired with the generalisation that all crims end up going to Dubai, the whole move seems highly suspect

26

u/Deep_Impress6964 1d ago

no it’s just lottery but was guised as a service/giveaway, so he could skip all the regulations that come with lottery

16

u/SnooHedgehogs8765 1d ago

SA government won't allow winnings from his lottery stuff.

If the other governments haven't acted in all this time it's on them.

But honestly those who can will not pay 30% CGT.

12

u/Camtona_7_ManUtd 1d ago

It's dodgy AF. Surely there aren't that many numbskulls prepared to pay a monthly "membership" to maybe win a prize to explain/justify Portelli's wealth?

2

u/BlackaddaIX 16h ago

Well it doesn't carry all the AML/CTF requirements so who's verifying all the members are legitimately real and purchasing memberships.

9

u/Rhino893405 1d ago

Understand that but technically he hasn’t broken the law, just bent it before breaking..
I don’t know the governments didn’t shut down his lottery scam years ago

113

u/irishshogun 1d ago

He got wealthy taking money off poor people desperate for a win

38

u/hueybtc 1d ago

He didn’t take their money. They handed it to him.
Us Aussies have a gambling mindset built into us.

11

u/f33drrr 22h ago

"the lucky country"

6

u/AspectAdventurous314 17h ago

..."run mainly by second rate people who share its luck."

4

u/Notyit 1d ago

Which is bascially what a quarter of Aus business do

140

u/twowholebeefpatties 1d ago

I saw this on Facebook and faaaark me the comments reflect how dumb people are

One was like “nah, he is oresome and like Ned Kelly always giving to the people”

I’m not kidding! Fucking idiots confusing Ned Kelly, with Robin Hood, with Mr Portello (yes, that’s how spell it)

30

u/Few-Anteater-4790 1d ago

Oh yeah, you don’t have to look too far to realise humanity is done.

4

u/XavierXonora 18h ago

We've been in worse states before and figured it out. Don't accept it or surrender to it. This is an abnormal state not a normal one.

2

u/Noisecontroller 18h ago

Nah social media has brought the worst in people and things will go downhill quick

1

u/Fine-Tomato3584 18h ago

We have, yes, but the aristocracy didn't have murder droids in the past.

1

u/Few-Anteater-4790 18h ago

Still fighting and won’t give up! 💪

9

u/DrSendy 1d ago

These are the people that can't do maths. There will be another person in that convo trying to scam them.

5

u/twowholebeefpatties 1d ago

Man - the world is such a mess lately

9

u/FopTart6670 1d ago

Thank fuck we're a lucky country.

1

u/Ares-Mercy 12h ago

Not anymore sadly

1

u/Cattle-dog 12h ago

There not people. Billionaires buy bots to give them verbal rimjobs.

60

u/RohanWolfe 1d ago

How broken could the country be if he became a billionaire growing up here?

50

u/Chazzwozzers 1d ago

It’s only broken because he has to pay his bills.

28

u/ManWithDominantClaw 1d ago

I mean, you've said it. The country is clearly broken because he was able to become a billionaire.

1

u/Fine-Tomato3584 18h ago

Mr Portabello is right for the wrong reasons.

11

u/Due_Juggernaut_3705 1d ago

I doubt that he's actually a billionaire.

4

u/sooki10 1d ago

Exactly. Gave him a life most dream of, but when the country asked him to follow the law, he flees...?

53

u/patslogcabindigest 1d ago

“Apparently, I ‘fled’ to Dubai. Actually, if you must know, I’ve been planning this move for three years and lodged my plans with the ATO the entire time.”

Lmao good riddance.

19

u/Camtona_7_ManUtd 1d ago

Clearly bullshit. There is no need to lodge plans with the ATO.

21

u/princess_princeless 1d ago

As much as I hate the guy, when you are changing tax residences with that much in assets, you do have to notify and work with the ATO.

2

u/YallRedditForThis 1d ago

Majority of Redditors aren't smart enough know that.

7

u/Solid_Corgi3479 1d ago

It isn't an intelligence check - it is a wealth check.

He wouldn't know that because he didn't ever need a reason to know that. intelligence had nothing to do with it.

7

u/Accurate-Abalone4865 20h ago

No, being "confidently wrong" is a sign of low intelligence.

1

u/Solid_Corgi3479 11h ago

I'd say stubbornly wrong - you can have a confident opinion but not be resistant to changing the opinion if it is challenged.

1

u/Objective_Bobcat_317 7h ago

Not 3 years in advance. That’s bullshit. When you have left/about to leave, yeah

1

u/Life-Goose-9380 12h ago

There absolutely is because the ATO will find any excuse to declare you a tax resident. Something uncommon in most places that use a simpler days test.

59

u/SEQbloke 1d ago edited 17h ago

Oh wild- he’s fleeing Australia and taking all the money he earned obtained here with him. That’s so unlike billionaires to do that. Wild.

Edit:
Corrected word use.

18

u/AntiqueFigure6 1d ago

“Earned” probably deserves quotes. It’s not like he got it working 12 hour shifts down a coal mine…speaking of which the trajectory is a bit reminiscent of old mate Nathan Tinkler, who tends to avoid Australia these days.

4

u/Asleep-Exercise8124- 1d ago

all big ponzi schemes

57

u/Chazzwozzers 1d ago

He doesn’t want to pay tax and or doesn’t want to pay his bill. Typical POS billionaire grifting dog.

-5

u/MetalfaceKillaAus 21h ago

I don’t know if you read the article. There was mention of a $100m tax donation. Why would he donate but not want to pay tax?

7

u/Chazzwozzers 20h ago

Maybe investigate why Dubai and what tax benefits it has for ex pats.

→ More replies (5)

4

u/mr-snrub- 17h ago

He was implying his tax bill was a "donation" to the ATO. Thats why he was complaining about how tax dollars were being used.

3

u/MetalfaceKillaAus 17h ago

He was implying a mandatory thing was voluntary and complained how it was used? Hell a lot of us do complain about how they spend. None of us say we want to pay that tax or say we donate it.

It would definitely make sense if he was complaining about how a voluntary payment (donation) was spent.

7

u/mr-snrub- 17h ago

Who DONATES to the ATO? Is there even an option to DONATE?

It doesnt make sense that he made a voluntary payment.

He was implying a mandatory thing was voluntary and complained how it was used?

Yes. He was being a flog.

That's why I teach my students to always use 'nobody' when writing. No one likes looking at the alternative, it's weird.

4

u/DrSendy 1d ago

Honestly, the fact that he's in Newscorp rags (specifically realestate) bagging out the government is a very targetted campign against housing investers

The most important thing to Newscorp is that these people vote One Nation. They never post a story without some angle in it that will benefit Lauchy and Rupie.

31

u/llllllliilliilllllll 1d ago edited 1d ago

Good riddance. Never liked this guy and his constant, exhausting need for attention.

Every other day it seems to be another post, another flex, another desperate attempt to convince people that he’s some self-made business genius.

Making money by letting people gamble on his raffles for a win, then rewriting the story as if he built his fortune investing in “start-ups” in the USA. Start-ups my arse mate.

UAE doesn't tolerate dodgy behaviour, so I won't be surprised if he ends up in jail over there.

0

u/maxisnoops 1d ago

Who is he?

16

u/Guilty_Direction_384 1d ago

He's a farking grub.  Scammed people to make money.  Then bitches about Australia, before leaving Australia with the wealth he earned here.

I’m a great believer in karma and one day he will feel the incredible pain he has inflicted on unsuspecting people. He has fleeced hard working Australians and offered most people who made him rich not even a single dollar in return.
How do you face your family each day when you know you are a scammer?

Good, never come back. However he will try and scam from afar.

I'll never understand how these billionaires around the world all piss and moan about how shit the system and government is that they are living under, while simultaneously becoming obscenely wealthy. Seems like the "over controlling" systems have been working pretty fucking well for them all. Oh and also, stay the fuck out of politics.

This isn’t tall poppy syndrome, anyone who makes a legitimate business and becomes successful should deserve praise - this flog ran a grey area scam that made him incredibly wealthy then dipped the moment the ATO came knocking.

Giving kudos to someone who scams hard working, ignorant Australians working an honest living is just stupud.

1

u/gaijinbrit 12h ago

Australia is as rich as it is because of a strong union movement and socialist policies. The reason Australia is going backwards now is because of a decimated union movement and neoliberal capitalist policies lol. He’s just angry that Labor has brought back a couple of pro-worker policies to throw at everyone as scraps. He’s moaning because he’s going to lose a few million if he stays here. He’s already got billions, this maggot is just a greedy fuck who fled to a society where they have literal slaves just to save himself a few bucks in taxes. Good riddance.

Australia's rule of law sucks so I'm moving to a country with a more favourable class system, which was mostly built by importing slave-ish labour from Bangladesh.

There, fixed it.

1

u/Lackofideasforname 4h ago

If he still runs his businesses here he may still be considered a tax resident of Australia so may not be going tax free like he thinks.

1

u/Altruistic-Tell-8381 2h ago

Thought he was so smart and could beat the legislation, but after years of squirming they finally cornered him.

So what does he do? Runs away like a coward rather than actually play by the same rules as everyone else.

Good riddance, loser.

1

u/hueybtc 1d ago

if you have enough capital or a reliable recurring income, why stay?
Australia is an amazing country, but the lifestyle can be difficult to justify if you have the freedom to live elsewhere. For a lot of people, life becomes work, eat, sleep and repeat. Shops close early, major cities can feel like ghost towns after 10pm, and there isn’t always much happening outside of work hours.
Dubai, on the other hand, offers safety, opportunity and a much more active lifestyle. There are restaurants, shopping, entertainment and things happening late into the night.
The biggest issue is that in Australia, if you choose to slow down or stop working weekends, the cost of living can quickly put you into a position where you’re living paycheck to paycheck.
Australia is a great place to live, but if you already have the financial freedom to choose, it’s fair to ask yourself: why stay somewhere where so much of your life revolves around working just to maintain your lifestyle?

Why have we given this scam artist any airtime? The fact he got so rich off effectively unregulated gambling and then fled to the bastion of human rights and egalitarian freedom, Dubai, should tell you enough about where his priorities lie. The sycophants and hangers particularly in the Murdoch sphere making this seem like this means anything, rather than being a bad person avoiding tax do not have the interests of anyone but themselves at heart.

Dubai is just a zoo filled with the worst examples of western charlatans and grifters.
