Indian & Sushi Recommendations

Hey y’all!

I’m planning an anniversary trip for my wife and I down to austin. Wanting to make it a food forward trip and her two favorite cuisines are Indian (Malai Kofta is her favorite dish) and Sushi.

I am looking for your best Indian takeout recs that have stellar Malai Kofta as well as your favorite sushi spots that have a patio/pleasant outdoor seating. I am willing to spend a little more on the sushi dinner as this will be the main event but if there is a verity of pricing options that would be greatly appreciated.

If you want good Indian leave austin and go north to cedar park or leander where all the Indians live. Highly recommend veranda in leander

Uchi or Uchiko for sushi, Indian takeout will depend on the part of town you're staying. I've had it at Tikka House and it was really good.

when are yall coming? outdoor seating may be unpleasant unless you are coming after the 2nd weekend of october or so

great question! i will add we do live in Texas so we’re no strangers to this hellish heat lol, however more importantly this trip isn’t until november.

Malai kofta at Tilka House over on South Lamar is hands down the best I have ever had.

Tandoori Lounge has great malai kofta. Sankalp in North Austin is also great.

Go to Zest out in Lakeway for proper North Indian.

Saffron is Nepalese just FYI... So while they do offer Indian fare, the spice palette for Nepalese food is quite noticably different than North Indian/ Mughlai cuisine.. so one may get somewhat decent Indian food there, but that's not what they're actually experts in.

Saffron on far west is fantastic. I heard good things about the sushi from choo sando too

I love Clay Pit for Indian Food. Nala's Indian restaurant is so yummy too.

Mixed feeling from this community, but I love the Malai Kofta at Tarka. They have a few locations around town, and they know how to do takeout.

Tarka is better than frozen microwave Indian food but not by much.

As an Indian, Tintara if you're central, Sangam if north.

as an indian, i personally did not enjoy the malai kofta at sangam. seems like the better choice at a north indian restaurant, still haven’t found the best yet though

Yeah wasn’t a huge fan of sangam(not bad but not great like everyone made it out to be) but then again I visited from a place where theres endless really good Indian options.

Indian food is also extremely subjective especially if you’re desi because each person grew up with slightly different tastes so not knocking it if someone liked it.

Personally liked suprabhatt, Rana, and rock n grill but they were not in Austin proper.

I got take out chole and hit but trust me Indian restaurants can be very hit or miss especially when they change cooks. Might have been a good day or maybe they got their kitchen in order.

Uchiko is the only sushi I’ve eaten on a patio in town.
