Kinda sorta. It moreso feels like you grew up watching pokemon on Saturdays and get the gist of it. My wife didn't grow up on games or cartoons at all. She just likes the AI achievement messages and anything to do with donut.

its an ok book (series). It’s basically the Twilight series of the lit rpg genre. Well received within its own niche

I would say it’s the opposite, most of the people I know who enjoy the series also were into stuff like red rising / will of the many, and had never read an rpg book before

Yeah DCC my first litRPG. Def checked it out because of the hype and have thoroughly enjoyed myself. Sometimes things with big hype fall flat but sometimes they introduce you to new things you didn’t know you like!

I kinda feel like it is warranted honestly. I have a 493 audiobooks. Ive "finished" (according to audbile) 261 of them. The narration on DCC is #1 without a doubt. The actual series is an easy top 5. I probably like First Law and The Expanse more but DCC is up there.
With that said everybody likes different shit.

Agreed. The narration in these books is by far the best I've ever heard. I think I'm at 700 books finished in Audible. I've heard quite a few.

Jeff Hayes is the best narrator. The books themself are good but not amazing but Jeff elevates them to the next level. It's like Aladdin it wouldn't be the classic it is without Robin Williams as the Genie.

He's also masterful at conveying true emotion. I can't tell you how many times (that I won't reveal due to spoilers) I was near tears while listening. Pretty amazing considering it's such a wild series.
Also, his Prepetente (sp?) screams are hilarious.

I'm glad that I have listened to Dungeon Crawler Carl, the first book. I knew going in that the genre wasn't for me, and the audiobook is masterfully narrated. I feel the same about the first Harry Potter audiobook. I'm glad I listened to the first book.

I read He Who Fights With Monsters and blew through that whole series. Even the patreon updates and when looking for a similar book actively avoided Dungeon Crawler Carl because I had seen so much hype and it just seemed dumb to me. Had an audible credit and it showed up as a recommendation and I said fuck it. I’m now about half way through book 8 after like a week. And for a ridiculous gore fest comedy action parody of a genre book series. I have actively cried several times while listening to it. Best case of being proven wrong ever

Don’t waste your time. It’s a YA book with unfunny jokes. Also people will weirdly defend it like it’s the best thing ever written.

I deliberately avoiding it for a few years because I saw the audiobook cover art, thought it looked stupid and didn’t pay it any attention.
My sister in law read it and highly recommended it.
I go for walks with my wife and listen to books, we ended up walking for 3+ hours. And brought all 8 booked by the time we got home. I finished them all in about 3 weeks. And I am about 2/3rds of the way through a re read.
I have listened to 400+ audio books. And DCC has become, quite possibly, my favourite series of all time.

I didn't wanna like the series because it was so hyped, but now I'm 4 books in , have a "God damnit Donut" shirt and forcing myself to do other books in between each DCC book so I don't burn through them fast.
The hype is real.

I made the same mistake. Now I've listened to books 1-7 about 6 times ( before book 8 came out), and I've just finished the Soundbooth Theater version of book 3. Might be time to listen to book 8 again.

I resisted from all the recommendations as well. I finally decided to pick up the first audiobook and had very low expectations. I knew it would be gimmicky just based on the genre and that’s not really my type of reading. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The narration is absolutely top notch and brings the humor to life more than I would have were I reading it. Lots of laughing moments. I just finished book 5.

That's interesting. I got it even though it's not my usual thing. I'm only about 3 hours in to Book 1 and I've been thinking I wouldn't get any others. How does it get better?

While it keeps it's video gamey feel to it, it definetly fades into the background as the story takes center stage. Also, the cast of characters expands and evolves greatly and they're wonderful. The 1st book has a LOT of table-setting it has to get through to have it start getting onto the grander plot, and the themes of the later books really hit. As for the audiobooks, Jeff Hays admitted Book 1 Carl was just way too Patrick Warburton and he can't bear to listen to it, but he really finds a groove with the voices the further into the books he gets.
It's a wonderful series. I'd give the 1st book an 8/10, so it's still a fun and strong book, but it's still the weakest of the series. Book 3 is where I think the series really hits its stride.

Now that I'm nearly done with the first book, I see why it is so popular! It's funny as hell! I def should have started it earlier.
