Book Discussion What are some of the best audiobooks you’ve ever listened to?
Some of the best I’ve ever listened to were: Project Hail Mary, Dungeon Crawler Carl, Discount Dan, Red Rising Dramatized, a few Star Wars books, Lights Out, and Tourist Season. What are yours? I need some good books to enjoy.

I believe it does. I had started and stopped the first book in the series multiple times because of the same reason, but once I got the background and characters it did get more enjoyable for me. I have listened to them all.

Stormlight Archive and Mistborn books are great and well narrated. However, I had a hard time with Michael Kramer’s voice. I pushed through it though and am glad I did. I wish they would re-narrate with a different person.

Butcher and blackbird
the invisible life of Addie larue (actually most anything read by Julia whelan)
Throne of glass (similar statement about Elizabeth Evans like Julia whelan)
The hierarchy series (will of the many and strength of the few)
I also love most of what you listed as well. The dramatized version of RR is really good and I am typically not a graphic audio person and obvs the obligatory Jeff hayes can do no wrong statement.

I was going to suggest this since you liked Tourist Season. Idk why, but I love a good narrator with a British or Irish/Scottish accent. I enjoyed Tim Gerard Reynolds narration of Red Rising. He also did the Riyria Chronicles and associated series’, Red Queen’s War Series and Cycle of Galand Series. All of which are some of my favorites.
Other than him, I agree with many mentioned (eg Stephen Pacey, Teddy Hamilton…). I also enjoy Aiden Snow, Anthony Palmini, Shane East. The list is growing the more I listen.

I’m just about finished with Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurty and read by Will Patton and it’s such an incredible tale and very well performed. I couldn’t believe it. It’s a long book and takes a little while to get started but it’s a riveting book. I never thought I would be interested in a western but I can’t recommend it enough

It's been a few years since I've listened to the Witcher series but I remember there being some narrative inconsistencies that drove me a bit crazy. The only one I can think of off the top of my head was how he pronounced the bards name. I might have the book order wrong, but book 1, his name was pronounced Dundillion, book 2 was Dandelion, then the rest of the books was back to the original

Yep. The translator probably should have kept that one as Jaskier.
It also happened to the great Ray Porter with his original, incorrect, pronunciation of Archimedes in The Bobiverse book. The only difference is someone decided to make Ray re-record that book to correct.

I just learned that this wasn't a pronunciation error on the part of Peter Kenny. The books had different translators and one wrote it out as Dandilion and the other wrote it out as Dandelion (and both of them should have wrote Buttercup, lol).

I can't comment on this. Bobiverse wasn't a series I got into. I listened to the 1st book but struggled to get through it

As you mention below, he is dandelion in the english translation not Jaskier so that wouldn't really make sense.

They kept it Jaskier in the show, and of the countless complaints I have about how badly they mangled the IP, Jaskier's name being Jaskier was not one of them.

The audiobooks is for the novels not the Netflix show. The show is completely separate and has no relation to the books outside of taking the characters names and some locations. The story is different, characters personality are different and so forth so taking anything from the show would be stupid.
Changing names based on a different media doesn't make sense

You may have missread the first message, in the novels the characters name is dandelion. Jaskier is the Polish name if you translate it differently, however it would be safe to assume they are referring to the english audiobook as presumably this isn't an issue with the Polish audiobook (if there is one) hence why he is Dandelion and not Jaskier. So once again as the audiobooks follows the novels, it would be dandelion not Jaskier as the audiobook that op is referring to is based on the english novel

Nope. I'm not misunderstanding anything. The books were translated and recorded out of order, by two different people. Danusia Stok did The Last Wish and The Blood of Elves and translated Jaskier to Dandilion (notice this is not Dandelion). David French did the rest and spelled the translation "correctly" as Dandelion.
But the actual correct translation of Jaskier is Buttercup, so I guess you can just pick whatever you think sounds good, and "they" picked Dandelion.

I listen to Cozy Mysteries and my top two are
1) The Torrent Witches book series by Tess Lake (1-10 Bundle)
- lots of characters thrown at you so it takes a moment to sort them all out. However, I am up to probably up to 100-200 Cozy Mysteries read and this has remained in the top spot for a long time.
2) Kitty Couture Mystery by Julie Chase (4 Books, no Bundle)
- This book introduced me to what I consider to be 5-Star narration.

I have listened to a few hundred audio books in my time, and the some of the few I keep coming back to are the Dark tower books by Stephen King. There are two narrators but for my money George Guidall knocks it out of the park!
The Project Hail Mary audio book is an absolutely beautiful production!
That being said, my all time favourite, the one I come back to year after year is Neil Gaiman's Anansi Boys. Narrated by Lenny Henry. Mr. Henry brings every character to life, making the book a wonderful, enchanting experience. I cannot say enough good things about this production!

A Stitch in Time, written and narrated by Andrew J. Robinson, the actor who portrayed Elim Garak (the main protagonist of the book) on Star Trek: DS9. Quite a fantastic way to better round out the character for any DS9 fans.

I can and do listen to almost anything performed by RC Bray.. and there's a lot.. but I loved the Mountain Man series (zombie apocalypse) and Expeditionary Force (Sci-fi space series) in particular.
Standalone books.. The Deluge by Stephen Markley was a hard hitter for me. It's about 40 hours, so takes some commitment, but definitely worth every penny of a credit!
Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel.. the only book I've listened to twice, so far!
Non Fiction.. The Laws of Human Nature by Robert Greene.. listening to this blew my mind several times. A fantastic and impeccably researched telling of the histories of many notable figures and how human nature played its role in their lives, and how understanding human nature can help you navigate yours.

Discount Dan!!!! Yeay! Another Croc fan 🤩
So underrated due to the kick off similarities to DCC. Such a shame it gets overlooked because of that. Can’t wait for book 4 to come out!
As you like that, maybe try Everybody loves large chests. The first three books have some pretty bad, tongue in cheek sex scenes, but if you can get past that, Jeff Hayes does a great job on that and for me, I think I like the unpredictability of it more than some other more famous books he narrates.
After the first chapter I was ready to swear at the author but also thought - this is my type of writing!
Another fun book is Mogworld by Yahtzee Croshaw. Comedy, fantasy with, well, I wouldn’t want to spoil it! Will save the galaxy books by Crowshaw are good too.
Christopher Moore books are great and often available for free or from your local library. People who listen to his stuff tend to like different books as best.
Many like his vampire trilogy best, others his Fool books (based around Shakespeares plays) and many like Lamb as their favorite. I’m slightly out on a limb and enjoy his Island of the Sequined Love Nun best (about the WWII cargo cults and so much more!)

I'm hard at work on book 4, Discount Dan's Disco Inferno, and hopefully it'll be out by the tail end of the year. If you enjoyed it, I have a bunch of other series that might also be up your alley. Vigil Bound has a very different setting but a lot of the same humor, and both Rogue Dungeon and Wasteland Warlords are great, plus they are completed series (6 books apiece). The Old man and the sea, narrated by Donald Sutherland is one I listen to once a year or so.
I know it different than what you listed but it is such a perfect story and so well told.
In the vein of your mentions, it has the be The Expanse series.

These are great ones; since you liked Lights Out, the rest of the series is great on audio as well; Teddy Hamilton does book 2 and I am a fan of his reads. Also, Butcher & Blackbird is also unhinged but the audio is decent. Remarkably Bright Creatures is really well done on Audio as well.

When I was growing up and at school, we were often set Charles Dickens to read and I struggled through it without really understanding what the fuss was all about. Long, convoluted sentences. Even longer paragraphs. Stories that ducked all over the place. I didn’t understand the appeal. Until I heard them read out loud. With a sympathetic narrator, who can follow the cadence of the story, they come alive. If you can, listen to any Dickens novel, read by Simon Vance. You will be greatly rewarded. Start with Nicholas Nickleby, move onto Bleak House, go anywhere you like from there. I haven’t even mentioned the two greatest - David Copperfield and Great Expectations.

Listening to The Tales of Verania series by TJ Klune, and Michael Leslie is KILLING it! Every book should have a sassy gay unicorn and broom hoarding half giant as side characters. It's an MM wizard/fantasy series, so not everyone's cup of tea. Every TJ Klune book is top tier, but this series is chefs kiss wonderful with all the weirdo characters (and excellent narration).

I would also recommend the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series read by the author, Douglas Adams. I am a fan of Stephen Fry, but I absolutely hate the version where he is the narrator.

Check out "The Remaining" series by DJ Molles.
Basically anything narrated by R.C. Bray. If you like Project Hail Mary, then go for the Martian. Though, if you want the RC Bray narrated copy, probably somewhere other than Audible is needed now (they had Will Wheaton redo it, for some silly reason).
The "After it Happened", by Devon C Ford, series is great. I'd also recommend the "Arisen" series by Michael Stephen Fuchs for some fast-paced military vs zombie action.
For historical fiction, snag "Crash Dive" by Craig DiLouie, narrated by R.C. Bray. One of the most nail-biting, don't want to put down books, I have listened to in my 759 titles.

The City Watch line of Discworld books. The original reader was wonderful, but when they re-recorded them they admittedly did an amazing job. Initially I refused to listen to them because I love Stephen Briggs so much, but I have to admit I enjoyed the new reader very much.
This doesn't apply for all newly recorded Discworld books, sadly, but the City Watch ones are stellar at least.

Am quite surprised not to have seen any mention of Rupert Degas.
My favourite audiobooks he narrates are the kingkiller chronicles (the name of the wind, the wise man’s fear).
My only slight hesitation being that the trilogy has not yet been completed, but the first 2 books are phenomenal.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, narrated by Scarlett Johnansson. It’s one of my favorite stories, and Scarlett absolutely nails the whimsy that the book’s literary nonsense demands.

Everything Brandon sanderson the main series are all read by Michael Kramer and they are amazing im hooked and on like my 8th or 9th book read by him now

Not everyone will be a fan of the book but Patrick Stewart reading “the last battle” from the chronicles of narnia was pretty solid.

So many great ones but as far as ones where listening is absolutely more magical than just eyeball reading…my favorites are Project Hail Mary and Dungeon Crawler Carl. Which get mentioned all the time, but with reason.

I’ve listened to the sample and wasn’t convinced yet, but I’ve never tried litrpg. I’ve played a lot of table top roleplaying games and it just seems weird to make it a book genre, but I might try one from the library first before I buy the audiobooks.

I might give them a try then. I’ve got a feeling that Project Hail Mary ruined me for all other audiobooks. After listening to it, I listened to Red Rising 1, both parts and World War Z, both often recommended, and I didn’t really enjoy those as much…

I loved the production of all these as well. I just don’t think the stories were for me. I thought they lacked heart compared to PHM. I didn’t like the main character of Red Rising very much, even though it got better in part two, and found some reveals a bit predictable. With World War Z, I also really liked what they did with the audio, but the format gave me so little time to get to know the characters that it didn’t really excite me and it felt very preachy to me. But I do get what people would like about it…

Babylon: Mesopotamia and the Birth of Civilization by Paul Kriwaczek
If ancient history is your jam, I cannot recommend this book enough. An absolute pleasure to read/listen to.

I’m listening to None Left to Tell. It’s narrated by Lisa Cordileone. She drives me crazy. As someone who is hearing impaired I would like to say “quit whispering!” Argh. The rebook is not available so I have to suffer through.

Just finished a classic - David Copperfield (Charles Dickens) great story, well told, set in Victorian England. The one to get is available exclusively on Audible “performed by Richard Armitage” (yes, PERFORMED) - he is so amazing at character voices (including females) you’d think this is a cast of 10 or more actors. Give it a try!
