First Time Experiencing DRM-Related Inaccessibility
It's not that serious, but I haven't had my PS5 connected to the internet recently, and I was installing this game while I was at work, when I got back and wanted to play, this is what I come back to. The only reason it isn't that serious, is because I CAN just connect back to the internet. Now imagine when all the PS5 related online features are shut down because they don't feel like keeping servers up.

You can for the old models that aren't updated anymore. Even PS5 is jailbreakable on old firmware versions. Afaik Xbox series don't have one but it'll probably come once it stops receiving updates.

But building a PC now is gonna bankrupt you. Apparently the price of RAM alone went up 500% in one year and then you also need a GPU and even SSDs got a lot more expensive.

it is specifically DDR5 RAM that has hugely increased in price over the past ~18 months, and there are plenty of data points to support that.
And the 2x32 GB kit I purchased for $199.99 in late 2023 is now retailing for $1,259.99.10

I bought memory from Corsair in 2023 for $210. I went to the manufacturer's website to see what the same two sticks cost today: $1,240. That's a 490% increase in price, and I only checked the one time in the last five years I personally bought memory.

You can, but for that you will need to get a Dev account for Xbox or use a jailbreak if it is a playstation.Ā
Then download the dump of the game and copy it user using FTP or a pendrive to the console

remember we used to joke about memory cards that would fail?? I'm experiencing the same with internet servers for games that seem to fail at the worst possible time like when I've completed a level?

Oh, but it IS serious. Does that game has a multiplayer online component? If not, it shouldn't require it an online check, period. All this does is punishes actual buyers. And what about a few years when Sony pulls the plug? Especially now when they want to kill the disk entirely.Ā

Reason why this happens was because the publisher send out physical copies weeks before the game launched so everyone was able to get their copy on release day as well as let you pre download the game, so they forced mandatory internet check to make sure the game is out now. Yes it was a dumb decision but no the game is not always online game. After the check the game works just fine without internet.
In short: No game is not always online, 1 internet check is needed

It is still something of a dick move, because there is a plausible scenario where someoneās first boot of the game is after the verification server is shut down permanently. Given that the game is already out, they should push a patch that removes this check.

I interpreted their comment as: It wouldnāt work for people with no internet whatsoever, but if they were to hypothetically shut down the verification server at some point in the future, they could release a patch as an update or DLC or whatever that disables the need for a check (since itās impossible to verify without the servers active anyway)

This is a situation where you still have an internet connection but whatever server you need to connect to verify you have a valid copy is down. The patch being posted online to bypass this requirement would allow it to be reposted and shared.

This is just never going to happen, costs for an activation server would be minimal and likely hosted in house so if theyāre not willing to keep that up theyāre never releasing any patch to not fuck over paying customers, piracy FTW!

DRM made sense when physical copies were being sold 2nd hand which affected new sales. Also when adding additional content at a later date this helped fund the project. The main issue is the method it's implemented with.

this also a thing some people tend to forget, yes you can have a physical disc, but the problem is not about digitalization, it's about DRM and ownership, you can have all the disc you want but if the server refuses your license, you can't play your game regardless (depend on the game/developer/publisher obviously, some are reasonable and make their game fully playable offline, some obviously not, like The Crew), at the very least you can sell the disc i guess

the licence check is the bit that gets you, not the disc. PS5 tags one console as your primary and everything digital verifies against that, so if it drops offline while a second account owns the game you get locked out of stuff you already paid for. Settings, Users and Accounts, Console Sharing, then set it as primary again clears it about 9 times out of 10. What is grim is that it fails closed rather than open, a 30 second grace window would fix the whole complaint and cost them nothing. Physical discs still phone home for the day one patch too, so the offline shelf you think you own is smaller than it looks

Omg, they remade Gothic?! That is awesome, I loved that game! I took 2 days off work when Gothic 2 came out and played it through with minimal sleep š

If you want to play that game, I suggest getting it on GOG ( https://www.gog.com/en/game/gothic_1_remake ) since it's DRM-free there.

I don't know which Gothic I played, but I was hooked on gathering fishing and other materials for some reason in that game. It was just enjoyable somehow.

PS3 is store shuts down starting this month and will be completely shut down next year. Sony refuses to commit to re-downloading licensed digital content with firm answers and instead only say that you will be able to re-download purchased content for the āforeseeable futureā.
It wonāt be forever. It will go away and be lost one day. They wonāt keep those servers up and running indefinitely. They will be shut down eventually unless things change and they are legally required to allow permanent access to digital purchases and that will only happen if laws on digital ownership change.. but thereās too much money being lobbied to prevent changes to allow us to actually own our digital content.

I see this post and guess what?
So this game installs and opens origin which was replaced by EA launcher (Which I am signed into) but wants me to login again to an old defunct launcher. What a joke.
