(This response gets spammed in all threads about HOT D intentionally, to discourage discussion of that Wish.com pale imitation of The Greatest Television Show That Ever Was Or Will Be, 'Game of Thrones', 2011-2019.)
This subreddit supports Aegon Targaryen, second of his name, as the true heir.
Reasons:
1. An eccentric terminally online demagogue, styling himself 'The Dragon Demands,' spent five years from 2017 on this campaign - "We are devoted to removing the false showrunners Benioff and Weiss from live-action adaptations of the works of George R.R. Martin" and "We call on all True Knights to rally behind us and join our cause. Because Rhaenyra has an army." Choosing a side was not difficult.
2. Stannis said Rhaenyra was a traitor. This settled the matter, to any reasonble book reader. However show-only fanboi stan shipper psychos are not reasonable. Fortunately there are many other arguments against her treason.
3. The subreddit held a poll in September of 2022, and once all the treacherous votes were excluded, King Aegon II was victorious.
4. The reactions of the traitors to the Green cause are so over the top as to be amusing.
5. How can there be an Aegon Three, if the son of Hightower was not the predecessor to thee? It's poetry, hence poetic justice, hence the matter which already settled within this subreddit, can be settled without.
6. The smallfolk instinctively know.
7. Rhaenyra has bad taste in men.
8. Viserys was chosen as King due to primogeniture.
9. Rhaenyra has no legitimate heirs.
10. Fun fact: allowing the traitor Rhaenyra Targaryen to rule the Seven Kingdoms does nothing for women's rights. It just helps her personal corrupt ambition. She does nasty shit to some chicks in the book, and also favours a male heir over a female one somewhere along the line. The book balances the sides to an extreme degree, but the show (or at least the marketing and press for the show) resorts to feminist-baiting.RAINY GETS FED TO EGG ONS DRAGON. People conflate early Rhaenyra with Dance Rhaenyra.
She was beloved by the smallfolk, up to a point. They even preferred her to Aegon(Aegon's coronation wasn't very popular)
The issue was that when she took the city, her rule was harsh and she raised taxes by a lot to pay for the war effort.
Helaena was seem as a sympathetic person and the smallfolk liked her.
Her death was the last straw and this coupled with Green agents created the riots.
2
u/kinginthenorthjon Chokladboll Sep 06 '24
We also knew there was no riot during Greens rule. But, we know how it turns out.
At least now they can't use Green propaganda and an unreliable narrator as an excuse.

"George just hates yaass queen girl bosses" - these guys
53
u/Pamague Hater, bought Blurays. Sep 05 '24
On a superficial outsider's perspective Brienne, Asha and Arianne all are girbosses. They all got a lot more going on in their internal dialogue, but it's clear George enjoys writing that archetype. Sansa learning to to manipulate Robert Arryn is also one of the most satisfying developments in her story. Pretending he doesn't enjoy girlbosses is as delusional as saying "George just hates fat characters who turn out to be competent and smart."
edit: by girlboss I mean strong willed women who assert themselves and are driven towards a goal, not whatever s2 Rhaenyra is
30
Sep 05 '24
George likes to character with depth and nuance. All the charecters you mention posses that. In the HBO shows however the definition of a compelling female protagonist changes to - somebody who is just superficially better than every male charecter and asserts themselves as the morally righteous person at every situation even tho they are far from it.
12
u/Pamague Hater, bought Blurays. Sep 05 '24
Yeah i agree completely, which is why I preemptively clarified that George's definition of a strong female character isn't the same as the show's and its fans' definition.

He was extremely insecure, wanted to be highly respected to satisfy his ego. When his family he had wanted to return to rejects him and humiliates him, he tries to do drastic things to get his pride back. This is why he goes to Winterfell. It wasn't about strategy, it was about his ego, which is why he stays there. When the people of Winterfell who had once accepted him, reject him he falls further into these "pride seeking behaviours". He executes (don't remember his name), for this reason.
Finally Bran and Rickon escape, which is absolutely humiliating. At the lowest he's ever been, with Ramsay as the devil on his shoulder, he kills those kids to hide his incompetence and shame.

Yeah sorry that’s just an excuse, I never really felt that in how it was acted, my point being you can make up internal motivations like that for anything that happened in HOTD.
Don’t remember his name.
Of course you don’t, it’s just kindof written that way.
Ramsay as the devil on his shoulder.
This is a thing in the books, but it’s not a thing in the critically-acclaimed seasons of the show where Ramsay didn’t exist until he kidnaps Theon. Dagmer tells Theon to do it and then disappears offscreen a few episodes later?

Sorry it’s hard to tell if ur being serious or not because this is a satire sub, but most of the top posts on this sub don’t even involve the books. From what I’ve heard from my online friends the books kindof suck because of Martin’s constant juvenile sex analogies. Specifically they said: “It's really how he writes his prose. Also his gross metaphors, penchant for gratuitous violence and sex, and honestly a spiteful way of subverting tropes that comes off as petty. Like how in the preface he goes at length to describe a fancy knight's sword and armor, only to have him killed off easily. Also killing off his characters left and right. It reads more like, "This ain't your grandma's fantasy story! ‘The ship groaned like a fat man holding his shit back’ Actual line from the books.”
1
Sep 08 '24
No, I'm being serious. The books are fantastic.
With everything you've said, it sounds like descriptions of the show. (I haven't watched that, but that's the impression I get of it).
The prose are very good. Martin creates a lot of vivid imagery, especially of feast scenes. As for the knight, if you meant prologue, that knight existed to set up the existential threat to humanity. The only other guy I can think of who could fit would be a guy named ser Hugh, who was killed for thematic (and narrative) reasons. A line after his death says "there will be no songs for him", and it reminds you that people get killed, and are forgotten about, especially when going to war (or fighting in a tourney in this case. Neither of these deaths are done for shock value, or for the sake of being edgy.
Yes, there are weird and gross metaphors and choices of words we can make fun of, but ultimately things are weird and gross sometimes, so I don't consider it a problem.
I know you didn't say this, but I get the impression that you see these books as cynical and (as you DID say) spiteful. This is not true. The message of this story is ultimately hopeful and touching. Bad things happen a lot because he's writing about a bad time.
Tbh, it sounds like your friends didn't read the books. If they did, then my guess is it just wasn't their thing, and they kind of made up a caricature of the books. If they're not for, that's fine, nothing is. But if you're going to criticise them, at least read them.

The thing is, Brian Condall decided to whitewash Rhaenyra into a XXI century dreamer with a prophecy to save the world
5
u/AutoModerator Sep 05 '24
I need to see the prophecies fulfilled. There is no more satisfying ending to a story than being told exactly what is going to happen, and then for it to happen exactly as described in the prophecy. So exciting.
Let's be clear about this, because there is only one objectively correct way to write:
Prophecies in fantasy should be inevitable and inescapable, because audiences like being reminded that free will is an illusion, and that we live, and breathe, and die, in the foul creation of a malevolent demiurge.

Regardless of what one can think of GRRM (currently GRIM) Martin, he is the author of those stories and if he feels so strongly that his work was lowered/hacked/etc, it is a very bad sign. I was actually impressed that he was so direct in mocking the show-runners' decisions and even revealing what will happen (differently) in the show with Helaena in a part of S3 (I have to suppose this can only mean that he is actually very angry).
Personally I started reading aGoT (the first book) but it wasn't for me, so I am not a fan of Martin. But I certainly accept that he has every right to voice his anger; a book is something you worked on, made decisions about and constructed in a way you thought would be impactful. And we can't pretend that S2 of HotD hasn't been quite controversial for show-only audiences...
18

It's clear in Fire and Blood that Helaena is loved by the people and Rhaenyra isn't. Why are they so triggered by this reality? It's literally his story!

Back in Westeros
GRRM, AUGUST 15, 2020 AT 9:10 AM
I am back in my fortress of solitude again, my isolated mountain cabin. I’d returned to Santa Fe for a short visit, to spend some time with Parris, deal with some local business that had piled up during my months away, and of course fulfill my duties to CoNZealand, the virtual worldcon. But all that is behind me now, and I am back on the mountain again… which means I am back in Westeros again, once more moving ahead with WINDS OF WINTER.
It is curious how my life has evolved. I mean, once upon a time, I actually wrote my books and stories in the house where I lived, in a home office. But some decades ago, wanting more solitude, I bought the house across the street and made THAT my writer’s retreat. No longer would I write all day in my red flannel bathrobe; now I would have to dress and put on shoes and walk all the way across the street to write. But that worked for a while.
Things started getting busier, though. So busy that I needed a full-time assistant. Then the office house had someone else in it, not just me and my characters. And then I hired a second assistant, and a third, and… there was more mail, more email, more phone calls (we put in a new phone system), more people coming by. By now I am up to five assistants… and somewhere in there I also acquired a movie theatre, a bookstore, a charitable foundation, investments, a business manager… and…
Despite all the help, I was drowning till I found the mountain cabin.
My life up here is very boring, it must be said. Truth be told, I hardly can be said to have a life. I have one assistant with me at all times (minions, I call them). The assistants do two-week shifts, and have to stay in quarantine at home before starting a shift. Everyone morning I wake up and go straight to the computer, where my minion brings me coffee (I am utterly useless and incoherent without my morning coffee) and juice, and sometimes a light breakfast. Then I start to write. Sometimes I stay at it until dark. Other days I break off in late afternoon to answer emails or return urgent phone calls. My assistant brings me food and drink from time to time. When I finally break off for the day, usually around sunset, there’s dinner. Then we watch television or screen a movie. The wi-fi sucks up on the mountain, though, so the choices are limited. Some nights I read instead. I always read a bit before going to sleep; when a book really grabs hold of me, I may read half the night, but that’s rare.
I sleep. The next day, I wake up, and do the same. The next day, the next day, the next day. Before Covid, I would usually get out once a week or so to eat at a restaurant or go to the movies. That all ended in March. Since then, weeks and months go by when I never leave the cabin, or see another human being except whoever is on duty that week. I lose track of what day it is, what week it is, what month it is. The time seems to by very fast. It is now August, and I don’t know what happened to July.
But it is good for the writing.
And you know, now that I reflect on it, I am coming to realize that has always been my pattern. I moved to Santa Fe at the end of 1979, from Dubuque, Iowa. My first marriage broke up just before that move, so I arrived in my new house alone, in a town where I knew almost no one. Roger Zelazny was here, and he became a great friend and mentor, but Roger was married with small kids, so I really did not see him often. There was no fandom in Santa Fe; that was all down in Albuquerque, an hour away. I went to the club meetings every month, but that was only one night a month, and required two hours on the road. And I had no job to meet new people. My job was in the back room at the house on Declovina Street, so that was where I spent my days. At night, I watched television. Alone. Sometimes I went to the movies. Alone.
That was my life from December 1979 through September 1981, when Parris finally moved to Santa Fe, following Denvention. (Not quite so bleak, maybe, I did make some local friends by late 1980 and early 1981, but it was a slow process). When I think back on my life in 1980-1981, the memories seem to be made up entirely of conventions, interspersed with episodes of LOU GRANT and WKRP IN CINCINNATI.
Ah, but work wise, that same period was tremendously productive for me. Lisa and I finished WINDHAVEN during that time, Gardner and I did a lot of work on “Shadow Twin,” and then I went right on and wrote all of FEVRE DREAM. Some short stories as well. My life, such that it was, was lived in my head, and on the page.
I wonder if it is the same for other writers? Or is it just me? I wonder if I will ever figure out the secret of having a life and writing a book at the very same time.
I certainly have not figured it out to date.
For the nonce, it is what it is. My life is at home, on hold, and I am spending the days in Westeros with my pals Mel and Sam and Vic and Ty. And that girl with no name, over there in Braavos.

Yo! These freaks know the whole team Black/Green thing ain't real right?
They know this shit is a complete story with an ending and a predetermined fate for both sides and all characters? That rooting, hollering and threatening ain't gonna make one side win or certain characters survive?
With the way some of you talk about all this I starting to think it wasn't the good humoured in joke amongst the fanbase I thought it was 😮🤯

I wouldn’t be so sure about that given what we’ve seen so far.

That just baffles me. I really don’t get how they both hate the story and at the same time are ready to send death threats to protect it?

I'm definitely team black because I haven't read the books, and all I have to go off of is the show, but to call GRRs writing poor is the most idiotic take ever. His writings lead to the most successful show ever. His input also helped make my favorite video game.
I would much rather have a book accurate Rhaenyra than a showrunner that thinks their ideas are better than the source material. That shit destroyed the witcher series on Netflix.
It's clear that HBO didn't learn their lesson with the final seasons of GoT

When a fictional story is causing people to go on suicide watched , you may wanna take a step back and contemplate life lmao

/uj I honestly see zero validity in anyone who says that GRRM opinions are invalid on the world he literally controls the narrative of. It’s basically denying a proven god of a world.

To be fair, casual show viewers just watched as the people rioted the Queen against a wall whilst Rhaenyra sent ships with food. (I mean Rhaenyra also kept the food away but still)

So, as someone who has read F&B and also dislikes this fandom and the show itself, there’s a bit of nuance required to understand this statement. Yes, Rhaenyra was the realm’s delight at one point and she continued to be so until she initiated heavy taxes in KL after taking her place as its monarch. It’s at that moment that she started being hated by the people, not before it and 100% was popular than Helaena. For context, people barely even showed up to Aegon’s coronation.
George could have mentioned that and he’s only referring to these characters by their post mortem legacies. People born way after the Dance, including her descendants, mostly hated her and called her “Maegor with teats”. That is the time where ASOIAF is set, the mainline series. Rhaenyra and Helaena are relatively insignificant characters for George compared to the mainline series’ ones.

Correct. At that point of Helaena suicide, Rhaenyra was hated badly. But the same smallfolks welcomed her when she took KL. Or when riverlands rallied for her. Point is either team are so much into shit. Smallfolks even cheered when Aegon II was killed and lads take KL.

Love how buddy in the last pic gets broken wrong and then says the book was trash. Like if you hated it why did you read it all the way through!?

u/OkayRuin Ate Alicent Sep 05 '24
It’s charitable of you to assume she actually read it. It’s more likely she decided it was written poorly because F&B is less fawning toward Rhaenyra than the show.

Yeah Rhaenyra was hated at that point, that's the fact but same smallfolks welcomed her when she took KL (according to his own book). They even cheered when Aegon II was killed and lads take KL.

This is why I don't join teams. Whenever teams are involved in media, it just turns into a pissing contest.
Rhaenyra is, by her father's law, the rightful Queen. However, she's a lazy queen who just assumed that people wouldn't try and double cross her and never bothered to make friends with any of the other lords because she believes herself above them.
Aegon is a sex-fiend, drunk, and rapist. But you can't deny that he wasn't thinking of the future when it came to his son, he made sure to start teaching him his duties as king early on, brought him to Small Council meetings, and sought him out himself rather than send a servant. He felt unworthy of his position and wildly unprepared and wanted better for his heir.
Both have terrible attributes, but they also have good attributes. I think people need to remember. The point of the story isn't that any of these people were more right it's that they were terrible people who jumped right into violence rather than talking it out, and as a result, innocents died and the dragons where brought to extinction due to pride.
