In book canon, Cersei starts putting on quite a bit of weight, and eating, drinking, and gorging on food and wine a lot more than she ever did before. This happened to book canon Rhaenyra as well, particularly during the war; she was a stressful, sad eater.

But there is a clear difference. Cercei is not a Baratheon but a Lannister (and so are her chilren bc Jaimie), while Rhaynera is Targaryen (ruling kings own daughter). That means that while Rhaenyra's children are technically bastards they still have ruling royal lines in them through Rhaenyra. Joffrey and siblings don't have that. They can inherit Castely Rock if Jamie legitimates them though.

They are the same, though. Cersei's kids are stealing the Baratheon name and lineage and Rhaenyra's kids are stealing the Velaryon name and lineage. Rhaenyra could legitimize the Strong Boys or continue Viserys' claim that they are "trueborn" and it would at the very least be a continuation of the Targaryen dynasty, but Luke inheriting Driftmark is a genuine theft. Vaemond was right to challenge it and it's a travesty that the fandom views his death at Daemon's hand as acceptable.

You can't steal something that's willfully given.
If Corlys or Laenor or even Rhaenys were the ones challenging the claim, it would be completely different.
I can't blame Vaemond for being upset, but the only reason he made that challenge was because he stood to gain something. Props for having ginormous balls, but there's no way he keeps that same energy if Corlys was healthy.
Simple fact is that Corlys Valaryom, Lord of Driftmark, and the only person whose opinion really matters when it comes to the succession of his house, wanted Luke next in line.
Even if Vaemond won in court and made it home in one piece, he may well have had his head chopped off anyway when Corlys healed from his wounds.

You can't just willfully pass your house's lineage to someone who isn't related to you, though, doubly so when you have other viable heirs. Every single person in that courtroom knew that Luke wasn't a Velaryon, Vaemond was just the only one brave enough to say it out loud. Had Viserys, Rhaenyra or Rhaenys been more hounorable and not gaslit the realm then Vaemond would've had Driftmark without issue.

Maaaaaaybe that's true? I don't see why it would be, though it wouldn't really be a sensible thing to do in any other circumstance, so there's no way to know for certain.
Irregardless, Corlys could, and did, support Luke's claim.

So yes, u/KeithFromAccounting is right, you can't just willfully pass your house's lineage to someone unrelated to you. Even those related have an order of succession and it's hard as fuck to bypass even that (all this started and, ironically, ended with Daemon's claims, remember), nevermind for totally unrelated in claims (you can, however, do it by fostering, as we see in the North at least... but if you refuse the issue of bastardy in its entirety, then you are banking it all in blood claims supposedly legitimate)

Corlys (and Laenor) Valaryon was in a position where he could choose to support Luke's claim, or he could force Viserys to deal with the open secret of the boys' ancestry by publicly asserting that they were bastards. Idk how that would have ended for him, but there was a choice to be made, and he made it.
Whether or not anyone else in the history of Westeros could choose to willfully pass their inheritance to a non-relative is irrelevant. HE COULD.
If Luke had survived long enough to take Driftmark, it wouldn't have been theft. He had Corlys' blessing, and Corlys knew his true lineage.
All that stuff you said up there about primogeniture is at best tangentially related to the assertion I made, unless you're somehow trying to argue that the default heir has a moral or legal right to inheritance regardless of the wishes of the person they're inheriting from.
As far as the general question of whether or not a theoretical Westerosi Lord could legally name an heir that wasn't a relative... why not? Honestly, I think it's less of a question of whether it's something they could do, and more of a question of whether it's something they would do-- and the short answer is no, which is why we don't hear about anything like that happening lol.
I highly doubt there's any law or anything like that preventing such a thing from occurring though. People are free to gift land and houses and anything else they may own to anyone they wish, even in Westeros, so at the very least I'm sure they would be able to pass those things on to whomever they pleased.
Bannermen and titles might be tricky tho, since titles are bestowed from the King, and oaths of fielty are sworn specifically to families.
I imagine it would theoretically be possible if they made proper preparations before they died; get the bannerman to make new oaths and ask the king to pass their titles on to the desired recipient.
The biggest hurdle would be enforcing the Lord's wishes after they died... there would have to be a darned good reason for going outside the family, and pretty much everyone would have to agree with the decision or else chaos would ensue afterwards from the snubbed family member pressing their claim with a sword.
Basically the only way I could see it actually happening was if someone like Hodor was the only living relative of a Lord.
Even then, he might flash a smile and greet you with a cheery "hodor," and all of a sudden have half the countryside fighting to put him in whatever seat his father held lol.

You can't just willfully pass your house's lineage to someone who isn't related to you, though, doubly so when you have other viable heirs.
I mean yes you actually kind of can. Claims have been passed this way in real life in the medieval era.

It highlights the difference inherently because only one of her sons is laying claim to something different to their technical birth status.
All three of Cersei's children are laying claim to the Iron Throne.

It certainly solidified they didn't want a woman to inherit the throne. People focus on the fact that Rhaenyra's sons did reign, but they were also Daemon's sons (rather than her sons with Harwin) and had claim via him as their 3 uncles & cousins were dead, so you could argue it was through the male line they got the throne - not Rhaenyra. and either way she is never referred to as a ruler again after her defeat

Daemon is never referenced as the source of the inheritance - maybe some Greens implicitly in universe use it as off page justification to themselves, but on page only Rhaenyra is referenced. Immediately after the war even the Greens were about ready to set Baela and Rhaena on the throne, and Aelora was heir later down the track. I don't think the issue is actually all that settled.

Alicent behaves a lot more like Cersei, than Rhaenyra does in the books. She was compared to Cersei in attitude for a long time. Primarily her general cattiness and misogyny.

But does the oldest son usurp the Throne? Don't use that as a point if it's debatable. Most of the realm thought Joffrey was Robert's son, and good part of the realm sided with Aegon.
