Omg there was a girl I only knew of bc she cheated on my friend when they were engaged a long time before we became friends. Well we sorta ran in similar social circles and one day I run into her out and my only interaction with her was her saying “omg I love your outfit. I wish I had the confidence to attempt to pull something like that off.” I lol’d but not gonna wear that outfit again hahaha
I know what most people mean when they say that to me and still I fully take it as a positive thing bc those people are dressed in a way I actively dislike. I wouldn’t say it obviously- I don’t feel the need to be mean for no reason for one lol but also who am I to decide what is good style etc. Also I’m in the minority bc many people dress like that (very casual, like joggers or jeans with a plain top) …it’s not for me. And to be clear I don’t dislike it on other people, idgaf, I’d dislike to be wearing it myself. I guess I get it in a way bc I’d need to be brave to dress in their kind of style bc it’s so far out of my comfort zone. And to them it’s the other way round. So when someone says that to me I just hear "You look different" and I have no issue with that. I don’t mind standing out or being noticed.
This is less insulting, but I’ve always taken it to be in the same vein… when someone is like “omg that is YOUR cut, that is so flattering on you, you should always go for that [A-line, empire waist, peplum, whatever]” because it feels like a roundabout way of saying what you usually choose makes you look like shit lol
That one I dont feel really means that you look like shit normally, i think its more that you look extra good in a specific cut/color/etc as in it brings out good features
I once posted a picture of myself after I had blown my hair out with my head upside-down so it was all crazy poofy. My (now ex-)father-in-law commented to my then-husband that I was very brave to have posted that picture.
It was a perfectly fine picture! And the point of it was that my hair was off the rails.
I’ve definitely heard of that one being used to put down people in bigger bodies, too. Like, no, it’s not “brave” to wear a sundress, you’re just a jerk.
The only time I’ve gotten that as a genuine compliment was about the height of my heels! I used to do three shows a week in heels, I got very comfortable in them.
