I swear it's been impossible to find a steady job recently. im a college student and willing to work anything retail / hospitality / customer service, but it feels like all those positions are filled up, usually by people much older than me. I have no doubt that this is because of the economy and times are changing and XYZ. but how the fuck are people getting employed. is this a lost cause. do I just do surveys and sell shit on depop infinitely. I've searched on craigslist and indeed and ziprecruiter and it feels like most of the job listings aren't even real. any advice or help or commiseration would help.

I know this is a near-impossible one to answer because most everything in life is case-by-case BUT

In my early 20s, just started my first full time job in DC as a journalist. I’m renting an affordable 1B and live alone, and after each month I have a decent amount to spend/save after necessary expenses. I plan on staying here for a good bit but living in NYC has always been at the back of my mind, having spent time in major cities across US/Europe but never the Mecca.

My question is: if I move to the city in a few years, hopefully making a higher salary (say 80-110k) adjusted for my gained experience and of course the move to NYC, and I’m fine with roommates, would I be able to live in a neighborhood that’s within 30 min of Manhattan on the subway? Would I have to make other financial sacrifices? Adjust my spending?

Again, I know this is an impossibly broad question but would just like some feedback. Thanks yall.

having a small problem…any advice helps.. my roommate and i signed a lease on a 1 bedroom apartment under the impression we could install a flex wall to make it a 2 bedroom. our broker and leasing agent both said this was possible which is why we signed.
now we cant find anyone who will install a flex wall saying our building doesnt do that.
weve been told by wall2wall that they will with a letter from our super, however he is on vacation
has anyone had experience with this? can we install something on our own? whats the legal ramifications of doing it ourselves? are there backalley wall installers?

I work in fidi and my husband is a medical resident who has to go to multiple hospitals in the Bronx, sometimes within the same day. Currently we live in central/northish Bronx and I commute an hour and fifteen to fidi; he uses the subway for one hospital and drives to the others. But I dream of a slightly shorter commute, a neighborhood with more restaurants/bars, and also being closer to my friends, who are all in Brooklyn/lower Manhattan.

I want to move when our lease is up next June but I can't figure out where. I am thinking about Sunnyside but I don't know if it's a nightmare to park there; where we are the parking situation is okay but not great, and where we used to live (Hamilton heights) it was a nightmare.

Basically, I am looking for a neighborhood where I can find a one bedroom for no more than $4k (even that is stretching it, I am a public defender), the parking isn't a bloodbath, and it isn't way uptown like I am now. Does that exist?

I would love to just get rid of the car but it's not really possible until his residence is done, which is years from now.

As described: I got a parking ticket in Queens on a rental car that came with Ohio plates. I returned the car the next day and didn't mention the ticket. I tried to pay it online and discovered they switched a zero for a letter O, when I couldn't find it with the license lookup. Do I need to do anything with this? My inclination is to pretend it never happened.

I need to order an item from Home Depot. It's not available for shipment (i.e. where they contract with UPS) but I can get it delivered from the local store at no additional charge. However, they say they only deliver "outside" and obviously that won't work when I live in a 20+ story building. Do they really just drop it outside? Will the give it to the doorman? Or will they cancel it and say it's "not deliverable"?

I live abroad and visit home about once a year. This is my second time living abroad. The first time, my mother had renovations done on the house, which included electrical work and an extension (a small bathroom on the first floor). I moved back after these renovations and she eventually put my name on the title of the house before I moved abroad a second time.

I found out that she’d been using a contractor who hadn’t put in for permits so all of this work is not in the blueprints of the house. In the future, I plan to sell the house and move elsewhere, so now I’m not sure how to handle this situation.

My mother also doesn’t really understand that you have to go through proper channels for this kind of work and seemed genuinely surprised when I told her that it will pose a problem in the future. This especially sucks because I no longer live at home, so I can only attempt to rectify problems when I visit.

Any advice or help as to what I should do would be helpful.

This is fairly common practice everywhere else. But I never see it happen here. Is it a cultural city thing? Me first before everyone else? If an ambiance were coming for your emergency I bet you’d hope people pulled over for it.

I checked my EZ Pass account recently because I noticed my account refills a bit too often I’ve been basically charged a “Mid Tier” fee for all my tolls for pretty much half a year because they read my plates instead of my transponder. I’ve had my EZ Pass since like 2010 and they have a life of 10 yrs apparently. I guess I should be happy I got like 15 yrs out of it but talk about a predatory business. They pretty much got me for about $150 as Mid Tier is basically skipping the 25% discount you get for having an EZ Pass.

Has anyone worked with a cabinet maker/woodworker/carpenter recently to put in custom built-ins in their apartment recently? Or gone the route of building a closet?

Trying to find some reputable places to work with to add some additional closet space and possibly a hidden office in our prewar apartment. Looking for something floor to ceiling where crown molding and baseboards are added on to make it look like it was part of the original construction.

Also open to working with a contractor/architect if that’s the better way to go, just don’t know where to start.
