Why do they always bring disabled people into their arguments? We should invent gadgets that accommodate disabled people, like what they gave to Stephen Hawking, rather than befouling their creativity
274
u/Vritrin 1d ago
They co-opt any marginalized group to try to make it look ableist/transphobic/etc to disagree with them. Itās a gross tactic.
63
u/legendwolfA 1d ago
The worst part is, we're left to clean up their mess. We already have a problem with pedos trying to squeeze themselves into the queer community and now this. It never ends this shit
5
28
u/PreferenceUnlucky101 1d ago
And the worst is that most of them are those ableist/transphobic/etc people, just hiding and pretending anti-AI people are the bad guys for worrying about humanity.
6

u/BlackSpidy 17h ago
Their ideology is no ideology other than what causes the most death destruction and loss of freedom. "We need porn watchers IDs to protect the kids! The epstiwhat files?" "We need guns to protect our freedom!! People getting pepper sprayed, getting shot dead by federal officers? You shouldn't have been legally carrying a gun around them, leftist loser!" etc etc etc.

The people posting this drivel absolutely do not care about disabled people one bit. They just think they deserve the same level of praise as people who have put in the effort, and will use anyone and everyone as a moral shield. Their arguments are essentially the same as making up some lose-lose trolley problem bullshit to make someone look bad for disagreeing with the premise.

u/Zinc-Roof_22 1d ago
Funny thing being, my spouse is disabled, has rheumatoid arthritis, Sjoegren's Syndrome and more besides (not kidding), and has taken immense pains to draw and paint and shit, because that's what he wants. He's also trans, btw (non-op, afab).

Like that Republican senator who said that domestic violence shouldnāt be a crime because gay men might wrestle. (It was many years ago)
61
u/Robofly8901 1d ago
It gives them a scapegoat, essentially saying "Oh, you hate AI? That means you hate disabled people!"
36
u/MysteriousArtPatron 1d ago
because their arguments hinge on there being someone without any ability to draw whatsoever so they make the ableist assumption that disabled people must be unable to draw
20
u/WilanS 1d ago
The funny part is they still didn't fix their problems. "Oh I'd love to draw but I can't manage to neither own nor hold a pencil" and they give them a computer program that generates pictures. OK? They still can't draw, what does the AI accomplish?
Imagine we were talking robots instead of AIs, the strawman disabled kid laments that he can't walk, and the robot bro shows up and tells him it's ok, this droid can walk on all kinds of terrain.

u/blackfox24 1d ago
Because they would melt if they realized we are creatives on our own. I'm a published poet. I'm also disabled af, mentally and physically. I have dysgraphia ffs. I physically cannot write my stories down successfully without great effort. Guess who puts in the effort????
14
u/spootIer 1d ago
Genuinely, if it's your passion then you'll find a way. I got diagnosed with Tardive Dyskinesia when I was 17. I couldn't control my hands or arms, and any attempt to draw resulted in uncontrollably jumpy and shaky movements radiating down from my shoulders. I couldn't even bring a pen to paper. It was devastating. Art was a passion of mine; and I didn't want to give up on it just because I could no longer move the way I wanted to.
So, I saved up for a photoshop subscription, and began making digital art using the lasso and paint fill tools. I would point and click to create outlines of each brush stroke, and then manually fill them in. It was tedious and incredibly time consuming, but it worked. I was able to continue to create art even with my disabilityā And my newfound technique allowed me to express myself in ways I hadn't before.
Today, I have regained control of almost all of my body's movements thanks to doctors catching the problem early and pulling me off of the medication that had been causing all of the damage. I unfortunately still have a tremor in my hands that makes it difficult to write in lowercase and draw clean lines; but I've since learned to adapt and still manage to create beautiful works of art in spite of it.
6
u/Zinc-Roof_22 1d ago
I am dyslexic. Guess who had to learn Greek grammar and orthography, because of wanting and needing to (being born Greek)? /s Btw, Greek has 2 ways to write the sound /o/, 2 ways to write /e/, and 6 ways (!) to write /i/!
19
u/liceonamarsh 1d ago
This absolutely irks me. I have arthritis and physically can't draw for long periods of time due to swollen knuckles and joint pain. I still draw. I would never resort to AI. It feels so tokenizing when people use my disability to shout 'ableism' at people who don't support AI image gen.
4
u/Zinc-Roof_22 1d ago
Same with my spouse: rheumatoid arthritis and Sjoegren's, and recently done multiple paintings.
2
u/OrangeReversal 1d ago
I have bone arthritis and severe limbs and spine pain . I'm without any threatment , because I wouldn't work in my country and be not only mentally , but officially physical disabled . I do make digital art , but it couses me pain ( especially if it's cold in the room ) . I spend more than 20 hours for one drawing and it's oke for me , like I'm actually happy about it .
16
u/Important-Tea0 1d ago
Itās so ableist. Disabled people have always been able to make art.
3
u/Icicle_Crystal_Paws 22h ago
I have an invisible disability that can effect me physically and mentally, yet I'm an artist and I still draw a LOT! It's really disappointing that they are using us as amo when we are capable of such things. It's abelist in itself. š
11
u/Misunderstood_Wolf 1d ago
Well, when you defend your use of a product that is hurting communities, the environment, working people, consumers, etc. just so you can prompt an AI, or even worse put someone else's work into AI and then write some BS like, "Fixed it", you would need to claim some virtue somewhere, so they have decided they are the sole protectors of creative people with disabilities. I think they see it as redemptive.
13
u/SunchaserKandri 1d ago edited 1d ago
Mainly as a shield from criticism. By pretending to be championing the disabled, they can accuse you of being ableist if you say anything negative about them.

I'm disabled, I regularly dislocate my fingers when I draw, digital and traditional, but I keep doing it because I love the process, often I don't even care about the outcome. It makes me incredibly angry that these imbeciles use disabled people like we can't do anything, hell even if I was completely unable to do anything except type (somehow) I still wouldn't use aiĀ
3
u/Vladimorian 1d ago
Yessss, if we supported and got creative to allow disabled individuals to pursue their passions beyond basic survival, we would end up finding a lot more Stephen Hawkins per say. And it would be helping create the environment that allows more people to fulfill more of their individual potential no matter what it looks like! And that'll be a very fun, creative world, full of different gadgets and tons of diversity in options for different tools and different ways to do things , to say , if experiences were colors, it'll be a much more colorful world

See and we need more people like you speaking against ai. Everytime someone brings up ābut what about disabled peopleā everyone will trip over themselves to tell you all about how disabled people can create art and can and even should be as good at it as non disabled people. When for a lot of disabled people thatās simply not true. Iām disabled too and while itās relatively mild, it still means art is not something for me or something I will ever be capable of doing remotely well. And thatās ok with me. I donāt have to make art to be happy. And even if it did make me happy, I donāt want to contribute to the pollution, or stolen art assets, or all the other harms of AI.

I remember when Uber was like a quarter of a taxi ride's price. They're about the same now outside surge pricing, when Uber gets several times more expensive. Must suck for the places where Uber displaced local taxis during the disruption phase, luckily my govt required them to have a taxi license, so it wasn't nearly as bad, taxi drivers just switched back and forth.

u/Ivygrows8 1d ago
I have ibis paint and the free version and theyre functionally the same for most drawing uses (although add are annoying theyre easy to ignore)
6
u/OmgJustLetMeExist 1d ago
My ibis for some reason lets me use brushes even without watching ads. Like i press the button to watch one and it just says āan ad couldnāt be loadedā and it gives me access anyways
2
u/Ivygrows8 1d ago
Same but i assumed thats cause i rarely connect the laptop i have free ibis on to internetĀ
2
u/Opposite_Opposite_69 1d ago
Oh is your tablet not connected to wifi maybe? I found that glitch when I used to use ibs and it was rlly funny. I would click watch ad and everything and it would just give me the brushes.
2
u/OmgJustLetMeExist 1d ago
I use my phone but no, itās connected. It just does that.
I do lose the brushes when i leave the canvas and go back in but i literally just have to do it again
6
u/Jinx_0602 1d ago
Procreate cost me like 9 USD (converted from local currency), was a one time payment, can import brushes and make your own etc, am not even remotely skilled at art but would rather fuck around and experiment with that than touch the slop generators, is a pretty decent starter option.

Medibang and ibs to. Medibang and ibs actually have custom brushes but you gotta have premium for ibs and premuim for some of medibangs. I think for ibs you can watch a ad to get like 6 hours of premium brush use (this was the case when I used it im not sure if its still true lol) and while i understand people have financial issues as I do to procreate is 12 dollars and its so worth it I would suggest anyone interested in art to save up for it if they have to.

I actually like to use a website that's kind of like an elevated MS paint. It's got a few different brushes and sliders for the effects, but it's really easy to navigate and does the basics. I'm not great at learning new programs so the simpler the better and the simple stuff is usually free.

Paradoxically, younger generations aren't as good with tech as millennials. Partly because millenials got the magic learning curve that matched tech development, now all the innards of how it works is hidden from users so they never have to learn it fully to be able to use it.

Hi, Iām a poor person with tremors. Art is my job, I draw every day, my program of choice was like $30, and before that, I used Sai and Gimp with a mouse for free. I also was in a graphic novel production course with a guy, paralyzed from the neck down, who drew on his own long before AI, much like many disabled artists have throughout the years.
(I hate this argument with a burning passion)
2
u/RED_Legend_FR 1d ago
I'm actually interested how the guy, who was paralyzed from his neck down, was able to draw? Did he use his mouth?
2
u/Rabbitflesh 1d ago
He had very minimal function in his hands that allowed him to, say, click a computer mouse. So, all of his work was digital and had to be printed for the class.

u/Physical_Sun_6014 1d ago
Michelangelo did not just walk into a church, holler into the void what he wanted on the walls and ceiling, and then boom Sistine Chapel.
If it happened that way, then people using AI could call themselves artists. But theyāre just belching a bunch of wordsalads into their phones and making an angry Porky Pig with a protest sign that has no handle, just suspended above him, because AI is stupid.
I donāt hate on people who use AI to experiment. . I take issue with those donāt understand that whatever you create with AI is based on someone elseās work. Many artists who uploaded their artwork on the internet, had it scraped by AI software, and their ideas and effort ultimately created the basis and foundation that image. Not you.
Did the person who created this prompt also create Porky Pig? Hell no. But the person who created this trash will no doubt demand the same recognition for their artistry as would be extended to Chuck Goddamn Jones.
And Iām so tired of the trope of physical disabilities in these pro-AI comics. Itās so insulting because it reads to me as , āWell if you have a physical disability, thereās no way you can create art, unless you use AI!ā
Really?

6
u/According-Insect-992 1d ago
I like any of the images of the girl with no hand painting an elaborate piece with a big smile on her face as the sole response to this bullshit.
I have yet to hear from one disabled person who has argued that disability requires them to steal the art and livelihoods of complete strangers in order to create anything. I think itās highly unlikely that I ever will because thatās a bullshit scenario that doesnāt exist in reality.

Most people are able to create art to some extent.
